Specifically, there's a shot of the back end of one the alien fighters where you can see what (I think) was a spinning sphere that may, or may not, have supposed to have been part of the power system.
Obviously this is speculation, but I just thought it interesting that the fighters of our new aliens might have a similar design "motif" to those of an older alien race (the Ori, whose fighters had the small ring with light that was also external).
At any rate, it might just be that someone in the effects house has a distinctive style that they don't like diverting from.
