    Shutting it Down?

What are the rules to shutting down an open wormhole? Which side is powering the connection and which side turns it off? I've always wondered how come it closes right behind the characters when they come home from an off world mission and also when they first arrive off world.

A Stagate is probabbly automatic. Once it detects that there are no more entities in the buffer, it shuts down, the exception is if the power source is connected to the gate and feeding power to it.

:Order evacuation of all unimportant personnel. Raise the shield.

In Lost City, we see that sending a continuous radio signal through from the dialing side will keep the wormhole open. I agree that it is pretty unpredictable though, sometimes it waits for ages to shut down, and sometimes it shuts down as soon as the last person is through.

It draws power from the dialling gate. The differences in time from the gate shutting down is at the discretion of tptb, just whatever is more convenient at the time i presume.

If the gate detects there is nothing coming through, it shuts down. As far as I have observed.

Nice sig Actualy, a gate can draw power from either side as long as the wormhole is established first.

Actually I think the DHD does most of that. Earth/atlantis can force a shutdown of the gate by cutting power to the gate. Likewise they can force it to remain open by keeping the power on and sending something through(radio waves, matter, etc)

you can't cut the power to a regular gate with a DHD. the Power source is built in so the gate shuts down automatically after so many seconds, with nothing traveling through. The DHD does do fine grain control of the gate's buffer(see 48 hours).

Which leaves me to wonder if you had three jaffa with staff weapons firing continuously into an outbound wormhole could the gate be left open for the entire 38 minute window?

A LOT of Jaffa would be needed to keep it open. See Solitudes...

                Spoiler:
There were many Jaffa chasing them that caused the surge which transferred Jack and Carter's matter stream to the other Stargate.

                By the way, thanks!

Some sort of high energy weapon caused the wormhole to jump. single staff blasts have been known to travel right through the open wormhole on several occasions, and even weapons fire from Wraith darts, and Goa'uld Gliders.

Nope, I mean that the Jaffa Army's missed blasts struck the stargate and caused the surge.

If they would be shooting staff blasts through the stargate continously they would be able to keep thé gate open for 38 minutes. But there is a easier way if they want to keep it open, they just put one of the staffs(or any other object for that matter) so that it is both inside the event horizon and outside the gate at the same time.
                      Spoiler:
See the episodes: SGA:ThirtyEight Minutes, and possibly even SG1hades of Grey, when the rouge team is evacuating O'Neill keeps one of his hands inside the gate so that it doesn't shutdown
