    Empire Is Wire's Most Neglected

SCI FI Wire readers overwhelmingly selected Star Wars: Episode V--The Empire Strikes Back as the movie most neglected for being left off the American Film Institute's list of the 50 best SF movies of all time.

    **snippage**

Overall, readers nominated more than 60 SF movies that should have been included on the AFI's list, but most received only a single vote. Among those that received more than one vote, the top 10 most neglected films were these: Empire, Aliens, Serenity, Terminator, Gattaca, The Fifth Element, The Road Warrior, Metropolis, Stargate and Armageddon.

SCI FI Readers also picked their top 10 favorite films from the AFI's list.

The AFI will pick its 10 best SF movies of all time for a TV special that will air on CBS in June.

Have to wonder who's on this alleged "American Film Institute" in some of their choices for their top ones, especially looking at the ones they left out...

The American Film Institute (http://www.afi.com/) has been around since 1967 (so it probably predates most people on this board). All 'best of' polls are subjective. While a film can be wildly popular, it doens't mean it was incredibly well written. It was just entertaining. Like "Armageddon." Loads of fun to watch but it's like candy.

I can't believe that out of the Mad Max trilogy, they picked Beyond Thunderdome...

I can't even remember that movie, except for the Tina Turner song

Films chosen appear to have socially significant themes (Blade Runner, Soylent Green, Clockwork Orange), or are considered classics (The Day the Earth Stood Still, Frankenstein, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Them, War of the Worlds), the first of its kind (E.T. Fantastic Voyage, Forbidden PLanet), etc.

                I've actually seen all except
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
                Minority Report
Repo Man (think I saw part of this)

Stargate the movie was entertaining, but (dodging flames), I wouldn't consider a "top 50" representative film either.

What? No "Journey to the Center of the Earth"? One of my favourites when I was a kid.
