    2005 SG-1 Fan Awards--Team Recruitment

(Please forward to any list/person who may be interested.)
We are looking for people to join the Stargate Fan Awards team as we
    prepare for the 2005 Awards.

The Awards team is made up of volunteers from Stargate fandom. We like
to have as many different fandom perspectives as possible on the team,
because the Awards are for everyone in the fandom. If in some years some points of view have been unrepresented on the Awards team, it's because we lacked volunteers. If *your* fandom perspective has been
unrepresented on the team, please consider joining us.

Being on the team is a lot of fun, but it's also hard work. We are
asking for a significant commitment of time, mostly during the Spring
and early Summer. That's the "active" period of the Awards, and it's
when we are busiest. Prior to the opening of nominations for 2005 the
team will spend a long time discussing the details of the Awards.

This year, we'll be talking about the best way to include Atlantis in
the Awards as well as discussing category changes and rules. This is why we're looking for new team members *now*: so we can start those
discussions early, and take our time over the preparation. All team
members *must* be prepared to participate in these discussions, which
means you need a reliable email account and you need to be able to check in regularly - not necessarily every day.

We all enjoy working on the Awards, and you're welcome to contact any of the team if you'd like to know more about it.

If you are interested in joining the Awards team for 2005, please see
the "job description" on our website, here:

    http://www.sg1-awards.com/jointeam.shtml

where you'll find more details about what the team do and how to join
us. You must contact us before 20 October if you wish to join the team for 2005.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Oh well... I would think about it, but it says you have to be 18 or older.

    Good luck with your search.

the age limit is because you will deal with smut or slash fic.

I can't thank you enough for mentioning that. I refuse to work with anything having to do with slash.

I can't speak for the team now, because i'm not on it anymore. But in previous years, you dont' HAVE to deal with slash, as in any one person doesn't have to read it.

I used to take care of the ship parts for nominations, since i was familiar with the stories/authors. I did count femslash and slash ballots, but all that involves is making a list and ticking off who gets what vote.

If i read a slash fic, it was because i decided to read it, i didn't have to. Just as we has members of the slash team that would not read ship fic.

You're not forced into doing anything you don't want to.

But the awards do deal with NC-17 fic of het, slash and femslash pairings along with the occasional R - NC-17 artwork/manips.

which is the reason for the age limit.

We always try to strike a balance on the team. During nominations, there's no point in asking someone who knows nothing about slash to process the slash noms. So, no, nobody is "forced" to take on a job they don't want.

But we work as a *team* and everyone on the team has to be *prepared* to work outside their comfort zone. While we always assign jobs within each team member's preferences, everyone on the team has to be able to view adult material and to read outside their usual genres, as we have to cover absences and unexpected issues. Anyone who tells us they refuse to have anything to do with *any* genre of fiction will not be invited to join the team, because that attitude does not make for smooth teamworking.

Sometimes stories do get mis-labelled by authors and archives, and there is such a thing as an NC-17 gen story. The awards team members have to look at everything nominated and there is no way for us to guarantee that any team member will be able to avoid adult material. The team has an age limit so we can ensure that, whether it's our preference or not, we are all legally able to view such material.
