JM has revealed another (maybe) episode title for Season 5!

And so, despite the fact that my mother and sister are in town, we’re only days away from celebrating Christmas, and I have a first draft of Broken Ties in hand, my mind is far from on holiday mode. If it’s not worrying about the tighter shooting schedule or whether or not Mark D. will be available for a return engagement, it’s fretting over motherhood issues or a red giant’s gravitational pull.

As always, JM can be tricky. Those intriguing hints following the episode title may not be from this episode...or they may be!

My first thought at the title was that this might be the ep that Jason Mamoa was talking about where Ronon "goes darkside" or whatever. The thing about Mark D. could either strengthen or weaken my initial thought depending on how you look at it. I had thought "Broken Ties" would refer to Ronon breaking ties with Atlantis. So you could look at it like Tyre is involved with Ronon's transformation to the darkside, or you could look at it that Tyre's involvement would debunk that and that the "broken ties" are Between Ronon and Tyre.

It may have to do with cast availability.

Hmm possible especially if the SAG strikes as many of the casst belong to it. I can't wait till an officall conformation of who is returning.

I think Ronon should go to his dark side for 3-4 episode. You know I love Atlantis, but I miss the real feelings between the expedition member. So if Ronon had problem with Carter, they should continue it in other episodes etc. :)

I do know he has has somewhat of a problem, perhaps it may become more extensive next season. Or perhaps later this season.

I would like to see more debate between the team members. I won't change the show into BSG, but the darker tone should appear in their relationship too, because it will be boring if they love each other and everyone accept every decision. :)

Why do I feel that Ronon's hair cut will be connected to Broken Ties? :D They mentioned they will write this change into the story as they made it by the tatoo on his arm. ;)

Meanwhile, the order of season five’s the first three episodes has been locked. It’ll go Search and Rescue, The Seed, and Broken Ties.

Maybe he will cut his hair, because he will accept that Sateda is gone. Tyre will betray him again, so Ronon doesn't have to keep the satedean hairstyle, because his culture lost forever. :( But! Maybe he wants to join as a civilized veteran to the Atlantis expedition even more, so he will decide to accept army standards for hairstyle etc. ;)

Production Designer James Robbins swung by the offices to show us some of the concept art for the first three episodes [...] And I offered my thoughts on Broken Ties (At first I thought Rodney might have had a bathtub shipped over from Earth but, ultimately, decided to go with one of Lantian design).

It does sound like a joke, though I'm hoping to we will get a glimpse of the bathtub! =] I actually have quite a few plots in mind that involve the exploration of Atlantis' sewer systems. Maybe an octopus will come up the toilet and eat Keller or Carter. :P

Just kidding. This is obviously going to be a Ronon episode; I was planning on commenting if no one else did that it's certainly interesting how his character-centric pieces tend to come at around the same time yearly. It'll likely have a lot to do with his 'dark side' movement, and I hope they do it both well and in a timely enough manner, as I'd love to see it all go down and then he returns, a changed but redeemed man, soon enough. I heart the cast dynamic.

Yes. *blinks* *coughs* *decides not to comment on the pics......*

It is weird that Ronon's eps come at the same time every year. I think JM commented on it in his blog recently. Something about how they didn't intend for Ronon's eps to always be the third or fourth episode of the season - it just worked out that way.

Jeff O'Connor

Well, my friend and I are really avid Ronon fans, so it works out well enough. We have a scheduled time of year to look forward to some decent Ronon development.

Then again, I still like John and Rodney even more, but it's certainly no understatement to say we'll get excellent quips from them, both with others and one-another, pretty much weekly, to the bliss of some and chagrin of others, so yeah.

What if the Broken Ties is a reference to the changing in Atlantis's leadership. Maybe Carter will return to Earth and the new, top secret base commander will fire out Ronon from the expedition. This could be an explanation why he will meet with Tyre, who will try to convince him for doing something.

All that's confirmed right now is that Sam will be seen holding a bag and avoid questioning as to why in the premiere. This doesn't necessarily mean she's gone then and there; she could inform the group in the follow-up. And besides, if she's signed on for several episodes, she could be anywhere thereafter.

It would be interesting to see what Ronons buddy is up to, who knows if the producers were crazy enough they actually might introduce Tyre (played by Mark Dacascos) merging with a wraith [half-green/ human] in the hopes of becoming a super human/wraith somewhat like a Ford and Michael combined

Jeff O'Connor

And then Tyre bumps into Michael, who has secretly kept Ford hostage and has brainwashed him to believe he loathes the Atlantis team more than ever, and the so-called 'Trinity of Eeeevil', as the fanbase will henceforth regard them, culminates their collective story in a maddeningly bizarre three-parter fifth-season finale involving major levels of angst, whumping, and travesties for the characters of Sheppard, Ronon and Carson, who each have to face off against their now-established respective nemeses of Ford, Tyre and Michael in a sickeningly twisted run-on sentence of action, adventure, romance, drama, betrayal and strange television that leaves the fanbase more divided than ever.

Wow, run-on sentence indeed..

The episode mentioned...

Well, this week is the calm before the storm, and a golden opportunity to make some major headway on Whispers before prep begins on Broken Ties. I’m pleased to report that I’m out of Act I and making progress on Act II. Right now, I’m feeling pretty good about what I’ve got but, traditionally, the second-guessing doesn’t really begin until, oh, Act III. There’ll be a lot going on in this one production-wise and I’d like to put it out early so that we can commence the planning/hair-rending/tearful recriminating as soon as possible.

Update:

On the script end, the past couple of days on Whispers have proven a breeze as I approach the end of Act III. I’m finally into the fun and fog and it’s utterly creeptastic. I’m hoping to complete a first draft before Thursday - when prep begins on Broken Ties. Jason came in and we discussed the big sword fight (Enough with the sparring! Let’s see some real clashing steel!), hair issues, and redemption. You know, the usual.

Am I the only one who's going to be watching Enemies (written by JM & PM) again... Coincidently the same basic plot as Broken Ties, just switch Teal'c with Ronon & Goa'uld with Wraith, add some SGA-elements (if there any left) and voila homage paid.

Well, you can't plagerize what's already yours, I guess.

Have you seen Enemies? When I read the Broken Ties piece that was the second thing I thought about, that it sounded eerily familiar. Deja-vu all over again.

The first thing was that it will be Ronon's token episode, and not sure, but it's also slated as the third episode (303 - Sateda, 403 - Reunion, 503 - Broken Ties).

This does sound like Enemies/Threshold now you point it out. The thing is, this episode isn't going to present any surprises unless Ronon actually does go over to the dark side for more than one episode. As a sleeper spy, maybe, with the rest of the team thinking he's back on their side. A dark grin in the last moment of the episode, maybe. That would be great. Jason Mamoa has said he wants Ronon to go dark.

I think it,ll be great to see his true dark side i mean in season two and three and four . we see his hate for the wraith his refusal to join his friends as Wraith Worshippers and then the battle where he kills all but tyre.
I just hope they don,t do what they did to Ford and Weir,I think they should do like they did with teal'c in season five of SG-1 i enjoyed we got to see him battle his friends it was great.

I'm sure Jason himself suggested a similar Ronan-goes-bad story even before Joe M began writing the episode, it was in one of his interviews.

I'm sure this episode will be about as similar to Enemies as Doppelganger was to Cold Lazurus, i.e= not much at all, but people will STILL bleat on about being a clone...

That was my thought when I read the spoilers....been there, done that. I also thought of Abyss. I mean enough...if you want to evolve the character (Ronon) try something else or someone else to do this storyline with. I mean we had Common Ground with Sheppard in a similar situation, Ronon in Runner....there are other characters on the team....I wouldn't mind seeing Teyla or Rodney put in a situation like that.....More Teyla, b/c I am big fan of hers :D But either one would work.

Does it ever actually leave the show?? ;)

It tends to take flight in the process of certain episodes and come back with a vengeance at their ends, but sometimes leaves for a longer multi-episode story arc. There may or not be standalone episodes between the beginning and conclusion of this arc. Some conjecture a relationship to the well-known "Ford who?" phenomenon. The migratory pattern of the status quo is a delicate natural cycle, and is still not fully understood.

Martin was first up with Search and Rescue. Paul followed with The Seed. And, today, it was my turn to as prep began on my episode, Broken Ties. We kicked things off with the 9:00 a.m. concept meeting. In attendance = everyone! In addition to special guest director we frankly don’t see enough of Ken Girotti. I love this guy. Not only is he a terrific director (his credits include 24, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Supernatural, Xena), but a genuinely fun guy to hang around with. Ken, myself, and the representatives of the various departments sat around the big conference room table while first A.D. Alex Pappas took us through the script, scene by scene. We stopped occasionally to discuss the transformation scenes, with Todd Masters and Mark Savela weighing in with their thoughts, recommendations, and best-case scenarios. By the time we hit FADE OUT, it was 9:28. “Time!”I yelled. “This has got to be a record!” I’d never sat through a concept meeting that clocked in at less than 45 minutes before! Sadly, we weren’t even close. The record is held by a Robert Cooper SG-1 season 10 script that took less than 1 minutes to get through!

We followed up the concept meeting with the art department meeting, the costume meeting, and the props meeting. Tomorrow, it’s stunts, visual effects, and extras casting.

Prep continued today on Broken Ties with a 9:00 a.m. stunts meeting during which we discussed, well, stunts, squibs, and Tyre’s kick-ass sword that Evil Kenny brought in for approval. Halfway through the show and tell, 1st AD Alex Pappas snatched it up and proceeded to show off his mastery of the blade. We were all blown away - until BamBam lost the tip of his ear.

I received notes on Whispers, worked on the rewrite, and took a tour of some of the new construction on the FX stage. Jason came by the office about a half dozen times today, each time popping up to discuss Broken Ties for all of two minutes before being called back down to set. Then, I rounded out my afternoon by skimming past scripts for appropriate flashback sequences. Alan is off and running on the new episode #9, The Queen, while Paul does a pass on Ghost in the Machine, Carl works on Tracker, and Marty G. gets a head start on the mid-season two-parter. Looking way ahead, I’ve talked myself into the #16 spot with “a very special Stargate Atlantis” (apologies to James Stewart), while we’ve got some other potential stories floating about in search of definitive slot.

I rewatched Reunion yesterday. After that, I think I'm a little disturbed by the idea that Ronon could be broken. His other two friends - Marika and Hemi - apparently never broke, and Ronon was so disturbed that the rest would have given in.

I hope that they give some other reason for Ronon breaking other than just being repeatedly fed on. :( I'm just starting to be a little disturbed by the idea of this story. I think in some ways it's not a bad idea, I'm just bothered by the method. I just can't see Ronon ever giving in to a Wraith, and I'm afraid it's going to come out as very OOC for him.

ronon is immune to being fed on, that's why he was made a runner. there's a flashback scene in "runner" which shows that.

ronon may just act as though he's been broken, because I can't see him submitting either. I think in the end, the experience will leave ronon with lingering effects that he'll have to learn to live with. if he is converted to a worshipper, who would that leave on the team? sheppard, mckay and teyla? not very promising... I'm also wondering if the wraith from reunion will be the one to try and break him.

You're thinking about Ara and Rakai. Marika and Hemi didn't show up in the episode - they were just talked about. At first the others told Ronon that they were killed fighting the Wraith but then at the end it came out that they died because they resisted giving in to the Wraith brainwashing.

I'm surprised at the lack of spoilers from Joe as they film Broken Ties, especially because he must be on set as it is his script. I'm not expecting him to post the script or anything, but he hasn't been posting *zip* as far as what's going on.

Once in a while he'll post an entry entirely focused on Stargate. Just wait, it's coming.

I guess he's just busy (since he's producing Broken Ties). He's been skimping on the Mailbag too.

In other production news - Will Waring is working on his director’s cut of The Seed, Broken Ties is shooting the Solen scene, looks like the Visual Effects department is going to have their hands full with The Daedalus Variations, Carl just put out the blue pages on Ghost in the Machine, Brad and I await the network/studio notes on The Shrine of Talus and Whispers, Carl continues work on Tracker, Alan has gone to script on The Queen, while Marty G. hammers away at the still untitled mid-season two-parter.

From David Hewlett's blog (3/13/08)

I’ve just had my first bath in front of the entire Atlantis crew…thankfully just BEFORE lunch rather than after it….I would be displacing a hell of a lot more water after I’ve finished grazing the fine foods of our lunchtime catering…what sane soul can say no to free deserts?…certainly not this one! If me in a bath doesn’t sink the franchise then we may be unstoppable…anyone who has seen “A Dog’s Breakfast” knows what horror awaits them ;-)

Ken Girotti is directing this episode and he’s doing an incredible job…more importantly he’s great fun to tease and knows exactly how to give it back…we’re all hoping he’ll be returning for more later this season.

Word from the set is that the actors are really enjoying working with Ken Girotti on Broken Ties. This is great to hear because we love what we’ve been seeing in dailies. Jason, who was totally pumped about this episode for weeks prior to filming, has been doing an awesome job. And all-around class act Mark Dacascos has been equally terrific, not to mention a real pleasure to work with.

Some of the write-up:

I did take some time off in the afternoon to deal with the teeniest of potential on-set crises after John Lenic informed me that we were in danger of not making our day. We dropped scene 50, trimmed scenes 44 and 49, and that was hopefully enough to take most of the pressure off. I wanted to stick around for the big sword fight sequence, but I had that rewrite to get back to. I still managed to snap a few pics though.

I think this will be a big whump ep (and bath ep :S) as well as being a huge turning point for Ronon. Some speculation on the dread-cutting scene that was written for BT - these pics are from the set of (I assume) Daedelus Variations (it wasn't easy to spot him over on the left, and in the second one he's behind someone else):

It looks to me like he has long (non-dreaded) hair so I wonder if he took the option of cutting the dreads off. He had had them made into a wig for filming the first three eps because they were too heavy when they were reattached. That should make for a great scene!

Back in the office tomorrow, and this is what the short week looks like: Production continues on The Daedalus Variations, most of which is being shot on the FX Stage. Prep continues on Ghost in the Machine. Ken Girotti, who will be directing GitM, also finishes up his director’s cut of Broken Ties, which means I‘ll be heading over to editing later in the week. Carl put out a first draft of Tracker late Wednesday so we should have notes for him first thing Tuesday morning. Or maybe third thing Wednesday afternoon. Paul is in editing, working on The Seed. Marty G. continues work on the still-unnamed mis-season two-parter, while Alan continues work on the Teyla-centric The Queen. The second round of network and studio notes should be coming my way on Whispers. And I’ll continue my leisurely meditations on episode 16.

Joe edits the episode...

As expected, I spent most of the day in editing working on my producer’s cut of Broken Ties. I trimmed the Previously On segment, made some changes to the opening walk and talk, and was making good progress - until I was stymied by the conference room scene. I considered my options, tried to formulate a game plan, suggested playing part of the scene on Sheppard (which didn’t really work), tried to stay in the wide (which didn’t really work either), tried to stay off Woolsey’s right shoulder (which proved impossible). Eventually, I gave up and moved on, reasoning I’d probably have more success tomorrow because tomorrow is Tuesday and, historically, Tuesday’s have always been good editing days. I skipped the scene and forged ahead, putting back the reference to Sarif Sur, losing the foibles gag, adding head here, tail trimming there -

“Wait, Joe!”I can hear you shouting. “Back up! What the hell does adding head and tail trimming mean? Is it just me or do those sound like naughty euphemisms.” To answer your question - Yes, it’s just you. In the editing room, “head” refers to the head/top of a shot and when you “add head”, you are cutting in a little sooner, adding a few frames or seconds to the beginning of said shot. When you “trim the head”, you are doing the opposite, cutting in a little later, perhaps shaving a few seconds or frames off the top of that shot. Given the preceding explanation, it’s not that hard to figure out what “adding a little tail” or “tail trimming” means. When you “add tail“, you’re adding a few seconds or frames to the end of a shot (if, for instance, you want to linger on a reaction for another half-beat to really drive home the point). Alternately, when you “tail trim”, you are losing a couple of seconds or frames from the end of a shot (if, say, you feel we hang on a reaction too long). It may seem like small stuff, but you’d be amazed at how a couple of frames here and there can make the difference between a well-timed dramatic moment and a beat that just falls flat.

Anyway, I managed to almost reach the end of Act II before breaking for lunch, then made some headway into Act III (the parallel montage sequence proved trickier than I expected) before time ran out on me.

Paul came in to take a look at it and, after much discussion, we both agreed we’d need to re-shoot the cafeteria scene (Paul is particularly fond of the bath gag). We’ll also need a pick-up of Ronon drawing his sword, the warriors falling back (rather than looking like a bunch of downcast extras shuffling off to the catering truck), and the B-side hits.

My first thought was Paul Mullie, just because it's a Shep/McKay scene, but that's just speculation.

Word from the con last week is that both Jason and MGM wanted Ronon to keep the dreads so I think he's going to be wearing the wig (and therefore no dread-cutting scene). This is also just speculation :)

He wanted them gone for him, not for Ronon. He said in an interview somewhere that he felt they were an important part of Ronon's look because they set him apart from everyone else. It's all academic now though, because Jason's dreadless and Ronon is bewigged so everyone's happy :)

Incorporated all of the notes on the Broken Ties producer’s cut and will be locking the episode later next week once the cafeteria scene and the wraith battle sequences have been shot. It’s an episode that takes Ronon far beyond the wise-cracking warrior persona fans have grown to know and love, offering up a glimpse of the character at his most vulnerable. Jason goes all out in this one, delivering by far his best performance to date. Some really wonderful scenes for Rachel and Bob as well as Teyla and Woolsey deal with personal issues. Also, a couple of touching Ronon-Sheppard moments as well.

This ep sounds really good

You guys are probably right about Jason Momoa getting wigged. Because unless Ghost in the Machine gets broadcasted before Broken Ties, Ronon still has his dreads in 5x05 as we can see on the pictures from Joseph Mallozzi's blog.

That’s it. An 8:00 a.m. stunts and SPFX meeting tomorrow, a visual effects spotting session for Broken Ties on Thursday, and we cap things off with a Whispers production meeting on Friday afternoon. And somewhere between now and then, we’ll squeeze in our second fog test, this time in the FX stage.

Update:

My VFX spotting session for Broken Ties was moved to the afternoon. It went swimmingly - with the exception of the sword-drawing insert I’m going to need re-shot. They’ll be shooting the Sheppard-McKay cafeteria scene on Tuesday and, if all goes well, I hope to lock this episode some time before it actually airs.

Otherwise, the front half offers up some great team-episodes as well as episodes which go a long way toward cementing the bonds of friendship between our various players (Teyla and McKay in Search and Rescue, Ronon and Sheppard in Search and Rescue, Ronon and the rest of the team - but Sheppard in particular - in Broken Ties, McKay and the rest of the team - but Sheppard in particular - in The Shrine, Ronon and McKay in Tracker are a few that immediately come to mind).

Hope writes: “I would like to know whether Teyla will be more involved with the different storylines in the coming Season 5?”

Answer: We’ll certainly see more of Teyla than we did in season four. As a fan of the character, you’ll no doubt love Search and Rescue, Broken Ties, and The Queen, and no doubt enjoy The Daedalus Variations, Ghost in the Machine, and The Shrine.

Yes, her decision to get back on the team should be made in this ep.

There's probably more reasons what that ep is called 'Broken Ties' than Ronon's probable offing of Tyre...

Teyla breaks with her people/child, too? Or she faces the fact that she really can't save the ones that are still with Michael...

And it's...almost done?

Well, I was at the studio until wrap last night, overseeing a pick-up on an insert. Now, normally, I don’t hang around for inserts, but given that this was the second time around for what I figured to be a fairly straightforward shot of a sword being drawn, I decided it might be best if I was on set. “We’ll get to it at around five thirty,”I was informed. Then: “It might be closer to six.” And: “Six thirty for sure.” Later: “Seven o’ clock.” And then: “Head down in twenty minutes.”(This at 7:00 p.m.). Come 7:45 p.m., main unit finally wrapped. The crew quickly moved in, set up the shot - got three takes of the sword being drawn (just in case) and we were done. It had taken all of five minutes and, just like that, Broken Ties was complete. Minus score, sound, color timing, and visual effects.

But he got only one Ronon centric episode. I fear that he will stay in the background in the other episodes. I would like to see him as a real 3D character: more hobbies, emotions and skills. I didn't want to think about him as a Teal'c clone, who play the natural strength in the team. I would like to threat him as a more intelligent character. He spend 3-4 year with the expedition, so he has to be more civilized than the "I shoot first, before I ask questions" cliche. :o

I was at post today to approve that insert for Broken Ties and, on my way out, poked my head in on the Whispers assembly. It’s looking veeeeery, creepy and presently running about four and a half minutes long. Will, busy on location shooting Tracker, will work on it this weekend. I hope to see a cut by Monday.

Thornyrose writes: “Is there some particular reason that Broken Ties is not further along the production process, or are things about status quo?”

There's also Tracker, where he spends the ep with Rodney :)

Last season I was especially looking forward to Reunion for Ronon's character development, but for me Midway was the better ep for him, so as much as I'm looking forward to Broken Ties, I'm also excited about Tracker to see some real interaction with Rodney.

He may have only had one ep devoted to him but he still had plenty of screen time and IMO was not just a background character.

I miss his unique opinion. There are most of the time only option A (Sheppard) and B (McKay). I would like to see Teyla and Ronon equal to them. Maybe Teyla is the moral compass, but I think she can be a more darker character with her Wraith skills than Daniel was on SG-1. But I miss Ronon's territory. Strength and fight? That's is all? He needs more development and I think they shouldn't cut out his scenes about this hobbies and memories about Sateda from 4x03. I could accept him as an artist. ;)

I agree, but the writers seem to want his input to stop at "shoot first, ask questions later." maybe broken ties will lend more insight.

I love it when ronon's opinion on michael puts sheppard in his place in "vengeance". I wouldn't mind him speaking up more.

Shep Whump? Apparently!

Also look for the return of the Wraith-worshipping Satedan Tyre (Mark Dacascos) in an episode in which he captures Ronon (Jason Momoa) and attempts to sacrifice him to the Wraith. Ronon is given so much Wraith enzyme in the episode that he gives in completely to his dark side and apparently does some serious damage to Sheppard (Joe Flanigan).

Momoa said that he got so deep into his character's rage in the episode that he actually broke a gurney he was strapped to. Momoa called the episode the most fun he's ever had as an actor. (Contrary to previous speculation, however, Momoa does not lose his trademark dreadlocks in the episode.)
