    2007 Fall Preview, Part 1

    By Kathie Huddleston

One thing's for certain— this is the year that changed everything for television. The big story of the year is that every major network is now offering television episodes on demand through the Web. You need never miss a program again. And with the advent of iPhones, iPods and other handheld, Internet-connected devices, we can download and take our programs with us.

We lost several promising shows last year (SCI FI's The Dresden Files, ABC's Day Break, ABC Family's Three Moons Over Milford), and we almost lost CBS's Jericho. But the most painful loss was Stargate SG-1. Its 10-year run on multiple networks set it apart from any other series on the air and made it the longest-running American science-fiction television series in history. SG-1 gave us a well-realized world, with heroes we could root for and memorable villains. Still, fans have Stargate Atlantis to carry on for them, keeping the universe and some of the characters alive.

Beyond that, it's nice to have a stack of returning shows (SCI FI's Eureka, NBC's Medium and The CW's Supernatural) back this season. They make us feel all warm and cozy and allow us to feel superior about genre television because we know all about The 4400's future people, Stargate Atlantis' Replicators and Smallville's Phantom Zone.

    Stargate Atlantis

    SCI FI, Friday, 10 p.m. ET/PT

    Premieres Sept. 28

The team had plenty of challenges in season three as they dealt with wraiths, Replicators and Kolya of the Genii. They also lost one of their own as Dr. Carson Beckett died in an explosion. In the season-three cliffhanger, it is discovered that the Replicators are building ships and a first strike is ordered. But the Replicators strike back, and the team is forced to take the Atlantis facility into outer space. Unfortunately, Weir is injured and the city abruptly drops from hyperspace to sublight speed, leaving them stranded and running out of air. Most likely they will survive, or this will be a very short season! Picking up where the cliffhanger ended, the team have 24 hours of power before they face certain doom. Later, Stargate SG-1's Amanda Tapping will join the cast as Col. Samantha Carter, as will Jewel Staite as Dr. Jennifer Keller. A season-long arc will focus on Teyla in what will be a "dark turn" for her, according to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi.

The Outlook: Stargate Atlantis ended up having another good year even though the exit of Stargate SG-1 stole some of its thunder. The addition of Carter as the team's new commander should be interesting for fans of both shows. The big challenge for the producers this year was how they were going to deal with Rachel Luttrell's pregnancy. They decided to write in the pregnancy for her character, Teyla, and tweak the story arc to accommodate her condition. With Stargate Atlantis about to premiere is fourth season, it's interesting that SCI FI has enough faith in the show to let it go toe to toe with the big boys and all that the network competition has to offer this fall. It's a daring step for the Channel and hopefully a good one for the series.

Going Homer, SCI FI, in development
This six-hour modern-day miniseries from actors Ben Browder (Stargate SG-1 and Farscape) and Andrew Prowse (Farscape) tells the story of a 12-year-old boy named Homer Ulysses Jones who can see Greek and Roman gods walking among us. When Homer's father is about to lose custody of his son, they flee Los Angeles and head toward the home of their ancestors in Ithaca, N.Y. Along the way, Homer and his father experience an epic journey as they discover gods who want to help them and others who would kill them as they attempt to reach their home.

Wraiths of Roanoke, SCI FI, premieres Saturday, Oct. 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT

Yeti: Curse of the Snow Demon, SCI FI, TBD
The tag line for Yeti: Curse of the Snow Demon is "Surviving the crash was only the beginning." In the movie, a college football team find themselves struggling for their lives after their plane crashes in the Himalayas. Things get even worse when a local Yeti decides the athletes look tasty. Peter DeLuise stars. [And David Nykl also costars!]
