The Company, what is it?

I was thinking, just saw Heroes S1, they are always referring to "the company".

"The company" is also a nickname for the CIA, would they be behind it, even though Bennet said he didn't work for the CIA? But he didn't even know he worked for Linderman..

Or would the company be Yamagato? Linderman Group? A nickname?
