Marvel Takes Iron Man Back

After more than two years of unsuccessful development at New Line, Marvel has taken back film rights to its Iron Man comic series, about an inventor who dons a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero, Variety reported.

Hopefully, they will do something and get a movie made. The comic book adapatations are halfway decent.

Looks like it's going to happen too. Jon Favreau is directing and it's slated for a May 2008 release (filming starts in February '07). About time...

That's the teaser poster with a concept armor by Adi Granov. Not too shabby.

To me it sounds like they're wanting to do this right, so I have high hopes at this point. Here are some interviews with the director, Jon Favreau:

There's also a new animated film in the works that looks to be a good bit more well-done than the Ultimate Avengers movies (at least in terms of technology):

I hope they do this movie right. I used to be a big comic book junkie, and still watch some of the animated shows.

Ghost Rider doesn't look very good to me. I'll watch it anyway, but somehow I don't think I'll enjoy it very much.

I kind of like how Marvel is handling this. They've got the two animated Ultimate Avengers movies out on DVD, being followed up by an animated Iron Man feature and then a weekly animated series after that. They're going to build his visibility before the feature, which is a good thing as Iron Man has never really had the visibility or popularity that Spiderman or the X-Men have enjoyed.

This has nothing to do with the movie (just kind of bumping it, heh...), but it is cool nonetheless, unless you happen to be a Thor fan... ;)

What is Iron Man? (beyond that half sentence description above)

Just need a full sentence. ;)

Iron Man is basically a Marvel comics superhero. The story goes that millionaire industrialist and engineer Anthony Stark is mortally injured and captured by an unnamed enemy (in the original origin, it was obviously the Vietnamese Communists as it was a book that began during those years; this has since been retconned a bit, but it remains similar). Seeing this as an opportunity, his captors hold the dying genius in an attempt to work for them, but while they think he's creating weapons for them, he's actually building the means of both his escape and survival...a suit of armor that will simultaneously sustain his injured heart (often parallels are drawn to his armor and an iron lung) and give him the means of regaining his freedom.

HOLLYWOOD, CA, September 29, 2006 – Academy AwardŪ Nominee Robert Downey Jr. will take on the role of one of Marvel's greatest Super Heroes, signing on as the title character for Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated IRON MAN. This project, the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment, will launch into theaters May 2, 2008. The film is being directed by Jon Favreau and will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.... http://www.marvel.com/news/moviestories.666

I find this odd. He's not exactly the kind of guy I see as a superhero... but then I suppose that may be the point.

It's interesting that they're casting people who can act in these sort of roles lately rather than just brawns or those with the right look.
Wonder if this particular Iron Man is going to be all angsty.

Only when he's drunk, which I'm sure Downey can pull off in his sleep...

I've got mixed feelings about this, but I'll give them a chance. It's an interesting choice, and it could have been worse. He's a little on the old side for the character and a bit too short IMHO, but these can be compensated for. I'm just hoping they get the armor right.

I don't see it mentioned, but further casting has taken place. Terrence Howard (http://imdb.com/name/nm0005024/) has been officially cast as James "Rhodey" Rhodes (a supporting but central character who would stand in as Iron Man for a time, and eventually become War Machine in the comic). I feel a little better about this than Downey Jr. as Tony Stark.

http://superherohype.com/news/ironmannews.php?id=4790

In addition, Jon Favreau is asking fans for input on the casting of Pepper Potts, Stark's secretary (and would-be interest, though it never got too far past infatuation on her part in the comics). Yeah, like he so obviously listened to the fans when it came to Tony Stark...

http://superherohype.com/news/ironmannews.php?id=4810

I'd go with Christina Hendricks. You may have seen her on Firefly. On the other hand, she might be better as Black Widow at some point. Hmmm...

Ken Watanabe or Chow Yun Fat. Both could play the part with a the dignity, honor and stature befitting descendant of Genghis Khan (or at least the Mandarin would think it as such).

if he was a bit taller, Susuru Terajima would be a good fit, I think.

My feeling is that if an actor has the height and even the build, the robe wearing would come naturally. It's hard to imagine that Dustin Hoffman or Tom Cruise would be rather imposing in a robe.

@fugiman: People are entitled to like what they like. Civil War didn't portray Iron Man in a favorable light, but that's because the writers basically wrote him off from the start. If you want to write off 40 years of history of the character based on the damage the "creative forices" at Marvel have done in the last 12 months, go right ahead, but your threads don't do your point any favors.

Anyways, here's the final design for the red and gold (Mark III) armor...

I have good feeling about this movie (with a good cast and director...I'm kind of glad that Tom Cruise's push to make Iron Man fell through years ago). I can't say that I like the Iron Man character that much compared to other Marvel superheroes, especially with the recent Civil War plotline that kind of antagonized the character despite Marvel's original goal to present both side evenly, but it is an interesting enough character.

I would suggest that everyone stay after the credits, or you'll be sorrrrry...

I felt that Iron Man was a bit unfinished in many ways... considering how it went out on a tinsy bit of a cliffhanger. The two main things that carried the movie, imo, include the humour (hehe) and the awesome-factor of the suit. Dude. The suit.

Saw this movie today and enjoyed it greatly.
The acting was quite good, the humor well paced the special affects were amazing. The plot was, well its your standard comic book plot, so if you read enough of them you should be able to tell what is going to happen but since it IS a comic book movie that is A-OK with me. If you know anything about the Iron Man story you would know the potential for it to be pretentious and preachy is there but happily the movie explored the growth of the character without preaching to the audience.

The movie was a great fun, popcorn flick and delivered on everything I would want on the first ep of a new super hero franchise (meaning it may not be as action packed as some would want, but they had plenty and set up a great character for the next movie.....they better have a next movie because I already cant wait for it).

EDIT: Should have read this thread before going. I was there with 3 uncles, one wanted to stay to the end of the credits with me the other two wanted to leave....since neither me or uncle #1 had heard anything about a tag we gave in and left. Poooy.

Narnia next and then Indiana Jones..... Karen Allen is back? Really???......that would be Marion Ravenwood from Raiders of the Lost Arc..... I thought that actress had had "issues" after that movie.

I saw it in premiere on 1st May and I love it. It is nice change from the psychological-depressive Batman-like heroes. I love X-Men (first two movies) and I really enjoyed Spiderman (first two movies) but Iron Man has something, that other movies donīt have - Robert Downey Jr. He IS Tony Stark.:D He was perfect and even when I donīt like Gwyneth Paltrow too much, she was very good, too. She was kind of charming, with an ironic attitude toward RDJ (and his character) and was a girl who can think and isnīt just kidnapped and had to be saved.
I am not sure if this movie would work without RDJ but I am glad I donīt have to find out.;)

This is after long time a movie, where I canīt wait to see how it will continue.;)

I could definentlly stand to see it again and again. A tad more action woulda been all right with me, but it worked great just the way it was. Course having a raging man crush on RDJ (coolest actor this side of Jack Nickolsan) I may be biased.

Now for de spoilers:

I loved the robotic arms and all the lines about Dummy and fire safety. 'Hose me again with out me being on fire and I'll donate you to the communitty college'

Easter Eggs I noticed:

1- Jarvis (the ai in the movie) was the name of the Avengers' butler

2- The Ten Rings was a reference to The Mandarin an asain villain, Ironman's first real nemesis who had ten magical rings

3- Rhodey in the comics was Stark's body gaurd/Ironman for a while/War Machine and you see him look at the grey armor (ala War Machine) and say Next time

4- Wasn't really much of and easter egg since it was revealed in the end but that Gov't agency was obviouslly SHIELD

5- Also not really an easter egg per se, but the Iron Monger reminded me a lot of classic villains like the Titanium Man, and that all goes back to the Iron Wars story line from the comics in which Stark's designs are used by various terrorists, enemies ect.

5b- Most notablly Doctor Doom, who the terrorist with the scarred face reminded me a bit of, even though it clearlly wasn't him

Now about eh Avenger Initiative: Does any one think it's likelly? As I understand it the rights to various characters are held by different studios. At the very least they have to get a Thor movie out before they could make Avengers, not to mention introducing the other characters from the team.

any ways Iron Man 2, Captain America, Thor and the Avengers Movie have been given dates

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=44654

Marvel Entertainment released their first quarter report to its shareholders this morning to coincide with the announcement about the success this past weekend of Marvel Studios' first production Iron Man, which grossed an estimated $104.2 million domestically and over $201 million worldwide. The announcement included an update of Marvel Studios' feature film slate with the already-rumored Iron Man 2 announced for a release on April 30, 2010, followed by three more movies for the summers of '10 and '11. Matthew Vaughn's Thor is set for a release on June 4, 2010, and The First Avenger: Captain America (the working title) will kick off the summer of 2011 on May 6, followed by the highly-anticipated and foreshadowed The Avengers scheduled for July 2011. (Edgar Wright's Ant-Man is also listed as being in development with no release date set.)

In a conference call this morning, Marvel Studios' David Maisel said that Iron Man 2 will be used to introduce Thor. Regarding more "Hulk" movies, Maisel said "We definitely plan on continuing." He added that development continues on Spider-Man 4. "I can't give any other updates other than to say it's in development and everybody's excited about 'Spider-Man 4,'" he said.

With that in mind, one can start expecting a lot more announcements in the coming months about creative teams and casting for those movies including who might direct the Captain America and Avengers movies. (Whomever plays Steve Rogers AKA Captain America presumably will be making two movies at once.)

Rise of the Silver Surfer was all right. If you cut out the dance scene. After Spiderman 3 and then that movie I was starting to worry that all Marvel movies would have a dance sequence in them.

I had no idea that Tim Guinee (Tomin, Stargate SG-1) was in this movie. He was Major Allen, the air force guy who wanted to shoot down Iron Man.

Holy crap. I thought he looked familiar! I could not place him for the life of me - thank you!

---

Finally got around to seeing it (and again, for that matter). I loved it. I thought RDJ did the single best job of absolutely embodying his character of all those portrayed in the recent glut of films - Christian Bale included. I'll definitely be seeing this several times in theaters, because it just looks good on the big screen. :)

Only Tony Stark could build one - and he'd do it in a cave. Maybe that should be Iron Man's motto: "I do it in caves!"

Unless you're trying to tell us that you ARE Tony Stark...

I love it when he's doing the first test for the rocket boots and he hit's the wall behined him i LMAOF it was so funny :)

When he's in the suit and get's shot by a tank i love it when he get's up out of the hole fires a small rocket at it and blow's it away and he just walks away as it explodes .

And when he tell's the robot with the spray not to spray him unless he's on fire and it still spray's him anyway lol .

When he makes the first verson of the suit and uses it to get out the cave i love that .

I've seen it four so far ;) I started reading the comics when I was 8 years old (I'm 30 now), and this movie nailed it. It met or exceeded every expectation I had for it. I remember being worried about Robert Downey Jr., but now I couldn't see anyone else in the role.

As for the Iron Man pics, do you want them just from the movie or from the comics as well? There's tons of stuff out there... BobLayton.com (the definitive Iron Man artist IMHO) is a good place to start.

So yeah...Robert Downey Jr./Tony Stark has a cameo (http://youtube.com/watch?v=BOq0BD_Eiig) in the new Hulk movie.

Looks like they have some universe-building under way...

The cross-pollinating, as it were, is only going to get worse - and by "worse," I mean "WAY BETTER." ;) They're planning the Captain America movie, the Thor one, and the second Iron Man (and possibly Ant Man), all building up to the Ultimates-inspired Avengers movie.

I am so excited. This is a massive effort by Marvel Studios to bring their stories to the big screen, not even letting distribution companies get in the way. I hope it all continues to be good. :)

You are telling me. Tim Blake Nelson plays Samuel Sterns ("Leader") in Incredible Hulk as well as an appearance, I think, by Steven Rogers (The good Captain himself) as well as discussion about S.H.I.E.L.D. and the "Super Soldier" Program.

I was never big into comics, never had the chance, but with Iron Man I am downloading the entire Civil War Series as it always interested me.

i just saw it tonight and it's a good movie. definitely worth a watch. I never read ironman so i don't know how true to canon it is, but i enjoyed it. not overly violent - as in graphic blood on the wall type of violence. not too cheesy, some good lines and a good mix of drama and humor

and the stan lee cameo was cute.
