    AU - P2G-349 (Alter Gaia)

    P2G-349. An uninhabitable, ecological disaster.

It was Zeus’s planet and he stripped the minerals and disrupted the environment past the point of no return. The ecology is ruined, plants struggle to live and if there are animals, they’re very primitive. Daytime temps can reach 120 degrees in the sun and there is no shade.
The temperature is rising. The water is drying up. Sandstorms blow up at sunrise and sunset due to the rapid temperature change.

The Gate is located on a high spot in the terrain, the only thing that keeps it from being buried in the sand.

      [ Ernest Pratt ]

Ernie could feel the moisture suck out of his skin as soon as he stepped onto the planet. His darkest sunglasses cut the glare to something reasonable. Thank god the shelters pop themselves up. He dragged one of them down and tore open the velcro straps. Giving the corner a tug, the framework unfurled itself into a 4 man shelter.

Kym stepped through the Gate and reeled as the heat slapped her in the face. "Whoa. Arizona desert at it's hottest."
She dropped her pack and helped Pratt screw anchor posts into the ground. "Sandstorms, huh? Gonna make it tricky to open the DHD without getting it full of crud."

Ryn followed just after Tyler and Belousov. She winced as the heat hit her, and was glad for the sunglasses and helmet. Its rim shielded her eyes against the blaring sun. "God..." she muttered, then sat down slightly catching her breath. She needed to get used to it. And soon.

Ryn took a swig of her water bottle and velcroed it back on her jacket, for easy access. It didn't really help much and already she was sweating loads. She longed to pull her clothes off and dry her skin but knew this was lethal in this weather. 'Come on.. Grit your teeth, you can do this.'

She gingerly walked a few steps, then saw the others. One tent was already up and she ached to get in the shade, though there were no orders to do so yet. Instead, she walked towards them, and caught Tyler's comment.

"Put a... Put a shelter..." Ryn took a breath but the heat was already starting to mess her up.

          "'round it.".

And that was all she could manage as the sun and heat finished its work.

Struggling hard not to faint on the spot, Ryn just stood there as the world spun in front of her, her mouth dry as sand paper, and her heart raced like 100 miles an hour. Added to that, a pounding headache began to form.

''Heat stroke.... Gotta be. GAH! Why me?! Come on I can do this...' '
Ryn wondered why it had happened so fast. Sure it was very hot. She guessed it was due to the quite drastic climate change. That and the fact she'd just 'flown' through the wormhole which was always disrupting senses. It wasn't ever as easy as simply stepping through a mirror.

"Whoopsie," Ivan said as he put an arm around Ryn, "C'mon. In the shade." He pushed her into the shelter and sat her down on the floor. "Take off your helmet and put your head between your knees," the man ordered as he stepped out.
Back a second later, Ivan was kneading an instant cold pac. "Put this on your neck. It'll help cool you down."

              In the shelter

Ryn took laboured breaths, but did as she was told, survival instincts kicking in. She cursed herself, why now? Why did her body want to betray her now?

"Sorry," she said sheepishly, as Ivan returned with the cold pack. She accepted it from him and put it on her neck, relishing the cold. She began to sweat some, a good sign her body was cooling down, which lessened the other symptoms though didn't stop them entirely.

"I feel horrible." The fact that she could speak, meant she was on the mend. She kept her head down, and kept sitting as told, head down between knees.

Jaime followed Kym but by the time she got to the shelter they'd already gotten it up; she turned at Ryn's suggestion and was about to say that it was a good idea when she saw the gunnery sergeant nearly pass out from the heat.

"Oh man," she breathed, moving to help, but Ivan was closer and got to her first. She could already feel sweat trickling down her back. "This just sucks out loud, doesn't it? Ryn's suggestion is sound; it'll help protect us from the sun in addition to sheltering the DHD from the elements as we dismantle it."

She eyed Ryn, who seemed to be recovering from her episode, and turned to Pratt. "Any way we can set up two shelters? One directly over the DHD, and one right next to it? I'm assuming your air-cooler uses a mist, which would obviously not be any better for the DHD bits than the sand or dust. That way we could sort of connect the two tents together with a flap between them and work in shifts, cooling off when necessary." She grinned. "Keeps us cool and the DHD clean."

                  In the shelter

((ooc: I'll assume everyone is in the shelter now. lol))

Ryn listened to Taylor, everything she said made sense though it made her remember something else, something important.

"Err... Make sure, you can ... dial us home, as well." She paused several times to catch her breath.
She was indeed recovering, but it was going quite slowly. Focusing on the mission helped to prevent her from passing out. The more extreme dizzyness had disappeared, though Ryn somehow felt it 'lurking' in the background of her head. 'Gotta focus, gotta keep it together, can't pass out, marines don't faint just from a bit of heat...'

                    (( It's only a 4 person shelter. ))

                    [ Major Pratt ]

"We've got one shelter with no floor. Get it set up over the DHD and stake it down. Get the other one set up and linked together, then put the main canopy over all of it," he gave a general order to everyone. "We can't start the cooler until that happens."
Mopping his own sweating face, he told Jaime, "The air cooler is an AC unit that runs off the naquida generator. No mist unless we want it."

"Ah, okay." Even in the heat she grinned. "I was thinking more low-tech, like the misters they used to run at the rides in the amusement parks." She looked around at the barren landscape. "Of course, then we'd have to cart in our own water, which is sort of anti-intuitive. So then- never mind."

Shaking her head at her own thought processes (which by now she was sure were driving everyone around her crazy), she helped set up the second tent around the DHD, tying down the side flaps securely. Once inside, the fabric snapped in the wind, but thanks to the weighted and staked bottoms of the panels the presence of dust was reduced to nearly nothing.

Once the air cooler unit was set up and working, the atmosphere inside the tent was postively temperate. Jaime went back outside for a moment, grabbed her pack, and brought it back in with her. She fiddled with it, managing to slide the solar battery charger/power source under the weighted side panel and into the sun; with the pack on the floor the computer sat comfortably on top.

She booted it back up and pulled up the schematics she and Kym had been poring over earlier. "Hey Ryn, if you're up to it, I've got some 3D schematics of the DHD. I can walk you through the program real quick and you can take a look at them and add your two cents to this process."

"Sure," Ryn smiled, feeling a heckuva lot better now. She could actually breathe again. The temperature was bearable with the AC unit on. It was now about half of that outside, and she sensed her body gradually get used to it and be okay again. Her head still ached, though now it was a dull, throbbing ache. Not so much causing stars anymore. She'd sweated heaps, and so started drinking from her water bottle. She kept the ice pack on her neck though, it wasn't that cold anymore but it sure helped in keeping nice and cool.

She peered at the computer screen. It was confusing.

"How does this work then? This ain't a program I know, well anyway I know no programs ... just a bit here and there..." Ryn knew there was babbling in there, probably a remnant from the heat stroke.

"Here," Jaime said, turning the computer toward Ryn. "Its a 3D imaging program; essentially, a fancy version of CAD. This is the DHD in a wireframe format; if you hit this key-" Jaime demonstrated- "It overlays the textures. You can rotate around the construct by hitting F6 and using the mouse pad-" again, she demonstrated- "and if you need to zoom in, just hit F7 and again- use the mouse pad." She stood up, feeling her back aching slightly, and stretched. "The 'Help' section is pretty good too, you can pull that up by clicking 'Help' and searching for terms and words."

She looked over to Kym and rubbed her hands together. "Okay then. Where do we start?"

The screen made her dizzy. Rotating things. She still felt queezy. Ryn was sure she wasn't able to walk right now.

Ryn reached for her water, though the bottle was empty.

"Anyone got some water? And an aspirin? Or something? I'm still weak. And I hate it." She muttered, as always getting cranky when ill.

"Sorry," she told Jaime. "Computers never were my thing. This doesn't make sense. If I saw the real thing then maybe. Maybe I'm too stupid for it all." She said sullenly, still upset with the fact she was ill.

Walking out of the event horizon, Kim felt the dry heat, cringing a bit, she got out of her jacket. She hadn't even been here for a five minutes and there was already a film of sweat on her brows and she could feel her shirt a bit damp with sweat too.

"Yikes," she whined, "this is hot," then walked in to the tent that set up. "ah, this is a bit better," she nodded as she looked around at the faces.

Jamie was already fiddling away on the computer. "So...uh...." she was at a loss as to what to say.
