Yes, yes, yes to just about everything listed on everyone's list above, but not a single mention of ET...Hmmmmmm...

Or Soylent Green...Okay, so it wasn't all that good, but it was extremely influential for its time, practically iconclastic, I'd say...

How about a list of some of the films that are maybe not that universally accepted as classics, but still have a whole heck of a lot of worth?

I'd start that list with Outland...great little film, tight, stylish, super supporting cast and even though Sean Connery never was a favorite of mine, he wasn't too shabby in this one

Funny you should mention Soylent Green, Ladyjanus. It's on the television right now. Don't think I'll be watching it this time though. I've got the latest Doctor Who ep to watch. Somehow the choice of watching something new is a little more appealing. ;)

Outland is another film I can easily watch over and over. It's a great film about a man alone on a far off outpost, where the only person he can trust is himself. Sean Connery is as good as ever in this film and there was quality support by James B Sikking and Peter Boyle. I've always liked films with that Used Future look.

Soylent Green is pretty good. And we can't forget that other Charleton Heston "classic", The Omega Man.;)
Has anyone mentioned Close Encounters of the Third Kind? That was a big film too.

How can you not love a movie with a supporting cast that includes Frances Sternhagen as a crusty no-nonsense frontier doctor whose the only one in town (ahem) on the space station to have balls enough to help out the marshall fight against overwhelming odds.

Sternhagen also happen to have been in one of my other maybe not so great but still pretty durn good miniseries "Golden Years."

I just love how things connect in life...

I watched 2001:Space Odyssey on my degree course and it was pretty good I can see why its so highly praised.

Gattaca, Serenity, Star Wars, Matrix, Terminator, Star Trek, Stargate, liked all of them. What about Jodie Foster's Contact - that was good.

Technically Spiderman is a scifi film too - genetics. 'The fictional use of science.'

It had some merits... Alan Rickman being one of them but overall it didn't really capture the humour of the original radio series.

Good lord I posted before reading all the responses to jog my memory lol

I would most definitely include War of the Worlds (prefer the new version though I LOVE the original), Planet of the Apes, Serenity and the glorious Contact that brought me to a flood of tears because I had lost my father. I would put Contact at the top of the list for that alone and because I admire Carl Sagan so. His Cosmos series is what got me interested in astronomy as a young man.
