    Cultural Diversification...

    Spoiler:
... is the way ahead for the control room apparently (from a VERY reliable source). Not sure what I think about that. I know it has to be done and all that, and of course I have nothing against other cultures, but I personally think that it's nice to have a familiar face at the desk. I think it would be better to have distinguishable characters from other cultures all over Atlantis, say, scientists, doctors now that we've lost Carson (), etc.

    What does everyone else think?

I think you'll have to elaborate (at least for me) to know what you're talking about... ?

I've heard spoilers about possible "control room" changes but nothing that implies 'cultural diversification'. Unless you consider Scandinavians to be under-represented on Atlantis

Can't say much more really, sorry, but yes I guess we could be seeing more Scandinavians!

No, honestly, that's all I know, that we won't be seeing as much of our favorite gate tech and that the control room will be culturally diversifying.

I so think more cultures should be represented in the city, just not if it means we won't see as much of Chuck!!

What was the point of asking for people's comments on the prospect of cultural diversification if people (i.e., ME) don't know what you're talking about and you say you can't go into any details? You know there's spoiler code right?

          I wasn't actually asking you personally I don't think...

And it's not a spoiler, it's a well known fact, but if it pleases you I will go and put it in spoilers. And that is all I know, I'm not being obtuse by saying I can't go into detail. As I said in my last post, that's all I know. Sorry if I offended you, I just wondered what everyone thought about it that's all.

Ignore everything I said, I think this was way more basic than i initially thought.

            Spoiler:
You're just talking about Sam aren't you?

Oh and I didn't mean you should have put your first post in spoiler code... I was talking about, if you knew something more that you couldn't go into details of, that you could put that in spoiler code.

            Spoiler:
So how is Sam contributing to 'cultural diversification'... she's just a blonde haired, blue eyed woman... I was pretty much joking with the Scandinavian thing.
That'd be like saying the show is sorely lacking a European white male presence...

I think before that I thought you were just doing like a "I know something you don't know, what do you all think of it" kind of thing without saying what it was that you know. My bad

Right, okay No, not at all, I suppose I came across a little like that, so my bad too!

              Spoiler:
No, I wasn't actually talking about Sam. I have heard that the control room is to be 'culturally diversified' ~ exact wording, and that is ALL I have heard.

Maybe race and cultures shouldn't be discussed on here. I realise many people get offended by even the most inoffensive of comments. I do have the bad habit of asking innocent questions that are often taken the wrong way.

I wondered more generally than what is said in my spoiler tag what everyone thought about other cultures being represented in Atlantis, as such an importance was put at the beginning of the show on the fact that people from all over the world were going on the expedition. I know we often see the soldier with the German flag floating about, and of course there's Zelenka. But mainly the cast seems to be made up of Canadian and American, with the odd British thrown in (I'm English by the way in case it matters to anyone ).

The fact I learned recently just made me wonder if people would like to see more countries and cultures represented in season four I suppose.

Nah I wasn't offended by the question itself at all. I just thought you were saying you knew something and then holding out on me

I'm all for it. I really liked that episode where they all made videos to send back home and that really illuminated the diversity... you had that asian woman sending a video to her family, Bates, Ford, Carson (sniffle), Weir, etc. Lots of canadians in that mix

Between Zelenka, Ronon, and Teyla, there's a decent diversity there... But I guess seeing a Russian team or an Indian team member would be cool. I like the idea of military joint ventures too... I never thought they covered enough the fact that a Russian team was operating out of the SGC. That just vanished from the radar

Tell you the ultimate diversification... bringing Ishta and Michael onto the team

i always cheer inside when i see someon walk by with an australian flag on their arm.

ive noticed the mostly american and canadian presence and i really would like it to change.

I'd have to say most definitely yes, since that was one of the reasons I initially started watching the show. It was going to be an International Civilian Expedition (with a military escort) with so many different people and countries, but ever since The Rising we haven't seen much of that. It's as if they have forgotten about all the other people who's flag we haven't once seen again. Germany is well represented so far, so is Spain (security officers), there's Zelenka (Czech)...and then I need to think real hard on what others apart from American and Canadian we've seen in a speaking part or floating around the screen more than once per episode.

I am not sure I completely understand, but I have to say that I like the control the way it is.

Although I do think think that we could have few more character in the background who aren't white, I like the idea of the control room having one single character who can be associated with it.

While in SG1 it was Walter, where as SGA has Chuck. While I have no problem with having a more diverse mix of races in the control room or guarding the gate, I do like the idea of having a mascot character associated to certain places rather than having random people do the job each week.

For season four, i'd like to see additional non caucasion characters, but considering the show is created in a mostly white country, I don't really see that happening too often, but it would be nice to see a few more characters from the IOA nations (China, Britian, France, Russia), perhaps include Grodinesque characters (like non white characters but who still come from these nations) just so we can get more of a culturial mix going.

Yes I completely agree with you there. It is nice to have one particular character in charge of the gate. I think it makes it more believable as I think Weir for one would like as few people as possible in charge of the gate, putting the shield up etc. I think she would like to think she can put complete faith and trust in those few (I won't go into the whole Weir in season four thing here!).

But also like you Saberblade, and everyone else, I would like to see more non-white characters, and hear more different accents. Even with most of actors coming from the Vancouver area we know from experience they can do different accents!

As Falcon Horus says, so much emphasis was put on the expedition being multi-cultural in the beginning, and now, although we do see different flags on arms, there aren't many main-ish cast members being non-Canadian/American.

I would love to see more European influences, and Asian.

I would love to see more people from different countries and cultures on the show. I always look for other flags. This is expedition was supposed to be a world wide venture. The interacting of the various cultures is great to see. I am Canadian so there are a lot of Canucks on the base, we need more cultural diversity.

I want some Russians in it. I mean, they were such a big part in SG-1 but there's absolutely no sign of them on Atlantis.
And I loved the whole Russian thing in SG-1.
They used always die to show a situation was serious!
                            And had rocking accents.

I really hope TPTB put some wookies in S4. They would really contribute to an international environment and develop foreign relations with a touch of cultural diversification.
