Greatest TV Detective of the past 10 years ( 1997-2007)

The first few posts will be dedicated to building the list of candidates, and then we'll vote.

Here are the few that come to mind:
    Monk
    John Doe
    Shawn Spencer (Psych)
Robert Goren (Law & Order: Criminal Intent)
    --------
Some broad rules: At least 10 new episodes have aired on US television between 1997-2007.

I think the list is pretty big now. The Poll is now up.

Vote based on who you think would solve a mystery first. No interaction, since Angel would win by default, he'd just torture Monk & Doe until they solved it for him.

    Is it just American?
    What about book/tv crossovers?

    My candidates:
    Inspector Morse
    Poirot
    Miss Marple
    Grissom (CSI)
Dr Tony Hill (Wire in the Blood)
    Tom Barnaby (Midsomer Murders)
    Charlie Eppes (Numb3rs)

It doesn't have to be American per say. It just has to have aired 10 new eps in the US within the past 10 years. Basically so most of the members here have an idea of what we're talking about. It's all an effort to stay away from the super obscure.

Eppes should definetly be in there, but I'm not sure about Grissom. Grissom's a good CSI, but at the end of the day he's just an average human with an above average intellect, and some slightly scifi gizmos. The 4 guys mentioned, and Charlie Eppes, have supernatural abilities which are way beyond that of the greatest real humans. I was even on the fence w/ Goren, but his knowledge level is beyond anything really possible.

Greatest.....the only ones that come to mind are:
        Monk
        Johnny Smith(Dead Zone)
        Maybe the guy from Psych
Most of those are from USA

John Doe but he only had one season
Another that comes to mind is The Closer, she is a good detective.

Angel is my favorite show, and "Angel" is my favorite character of all time, but he's a sucky detective, lol. His entire investigative technique was sniffing people, and beating up snitches. He also had a semi-photographic memory, but he's no Adrianne Monk.

And no teams to keep it fair.

Raines. Jeff Goldblum is great in the part.

Angel style has to be the most effective

Another that comes to mind is Bones but I don't know if she counts without Booth. They are like a tag team

Grissom, to my mind, is a great detective of the Sherlock Holmes mould. Brilliant, observant, eccentric, a loner and a forensic specialist. He doesn't necessary do policing but he still detects... He's the only reason why I even bother with CSI.

Don't forget it's TV... there's nothing realistic about any of these people. As far as I'm concerned, a detective (amateur or professional) is some one who solves crimes. Whether they have more knowledge than they should is, irrelevant. Same with scifi... Remember Sam Carter... who seems to know everything about everything.
