Howdy I was just wondering how many people are fans of Atlantis but haven't seen an episode of SG-1 before viewing the Atlantis pilot Rising?

Not anymore, the rating seem to be level with each other. Probably because Atlantis just seemed to jump in the middle of it with really no story of how the team got to be the way it is.It’s the show that doesn’t end, it goes on and on my friends, some people started watching not knowing what it was, but they will be watching forever just because it’s the show that doesn’t end…..

I started watching with Atlantis. I saw one SG1 episode though, didn't really understand what was going on, but the Onmipedia on this site helped. I watched the Stargate movie and though it was cool.
I really like Atlantis, it has a really good chance of being on the air for a long time. I don't not like any member of the cast, except for the Chief of Security, Seargent whatshisname, and I think we're not supposed to like him, so that doesn't count.

I've seen most of the SG-1 episodes, but I wasn't a major fan. I enjoyed the great writing and the super special effects, but I never could connect with any of the characters. That's what hooks me to a show. I have to connect with at least one of the characters. Also, I started seeing SG-1 in syndication and seeing the shows out of order diluted the impact. I didn't see the show as a continuing story, I saw individual episodes.
So far, I'm a major fan of SG-A. I got to see the show from the start and for whatever reason, I like the characters more. It's like any relationship, something just clicked. I know enough of the SG-1 backstory not to be lost in the technology, but I think they've done a pretty good job of filling us in so you don't really have to have watched SG-1.
What's there to know, anyway? Alien good guys give us tech to fight alien bad guys. We go looking for more alien tech, hoping to bring it back to fight the alien bad guys. We meet different alien bad guys, have to figure out how to fight them. It's not a new story.
It will be the character development that will make this show for me. That's what keeps me as a fan. I have to care what happens to them.

but atlantis does not explain things as much as SG1 did in the beginning so i guess thats
it is on an individual basis.

I've seen a half-dozen episodes of SG-1 over the years but never really followed it. I don't have a problem following Atlantis but the series set-up was really shorthanded. Sheppard would have been a great way to introduce the series to new viewers since he had no prior involvement with the program but they kind of dropped the ball. In a lot of ways it seems like all they did was replace the names on SG-1 scripts and put them into production as Atlantis episodes.

There is missed potential there. It would have been really interesting to see what the Stargate program looked like to someone who'd never seen anything like it before, like Shepherd.sigpic
