There is one thing that movies and tv shows have to have in order to really show realism, death. Now I'm not talking Ensign "Red Shirt" Ricky not making it back with Spock and Kirk, I'm talking key characters, Jadzia Dax, Adric, Wash and Daniel Jackson. Important characters that the viewer gets used to having around when they are taken from us. This tourney is about the best send offs for characters in TV and Movies in both Sci-fi and Fantasy.

For those who do this a lot, you know the drill by now. If you're new, here's how the voting works:

Stage One: Round Zero, vote for your favorite character's deaths from sci-fi or fantasy and any characters that get 3 or more votes gets through into the next stage.

Stage Two: Vote off one death per day until we have a winner.

Note: If voting for a TV character, name the character AND the episode in which they died, so its easy for us to look up :)

You each have TEN votes each at this stage. Stargate deaths are not allowed.

Sorry about the rule editing, twas mostly because I realised the sorts of deaths people would be posting, hence the spoiler tag rule, and because I rushed writing them and forgot a couple o' things :S :D

2. Fred; Angel; "A Hole In the World" (2)

4. Tracy; Firefly; "The Message" (NEW)

I think there's a theme here. Joss does death good. :)

Frak! Does the rule change mean that Crow from The Train Job doesn't count? Cause that's one of the best deaths ever IMO. Mainly because it says a lot about Mal.

As long as a character has had a major part in the episode, then its okay, i they are on screen for 20 seconds then they don't count.

3) Spock - Star Trek II (2)
4) Tara Maclay - Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Seeing Red" (1) (perhaps a controversial choice, but I maintain that, as with Wash's death, the very fact that so many people were angry about Tara's death proves its effectiveness)
5) Blake, Soolin, Dayna, Tarrant, Vila and Avon - Blake's 7, "Blake" (1)

Thermoman/George Sunday- "The Living Dead" (1)

Ok, so he didn't stay dead for very long but he did technically die. I'm voting for it solely because the funeral was so funny. Mrs Raven had hypnotised most people and when ever the vicar said a number they did something hilarious, Piers cluck like a chicken whenever he heard 'Three', Stanley quote from Spider-Man when he heard 'One', and Ella asks Stanley to ravish her whenever she heard 'Two'. They all did the "YMCA" when they the vicar said "four" and when they said "ten" they did the "nananananananananana na" (I can't remember what the song was called)

Would this count as a death? (Heroes spoiler)

Claire. I forget the name of the episode, but it's the scene where the football player tries to rape her, she tries to get away from him, and she falls and something goes through her neck. Next thing she knows, she's being autopsied... the object in her neck is removed, and she wakes up. Does that count as a death?

Are you gonna need the deathly hallows helpline when it comes out?

Waterstone's has announced plans to set up a special helpline for fans after Deathly Hallows comes out this summer. JKR revealed in June that two more characters would die (who she hadn't intended on dying), and the UK book chain says "this could be a similar moment to when Take That split up - there could be a lot of upset teenagers out there. We are looking to set up a helpline for them."

3. Sheppard Book (1) - Serenity

Ouroboros
February 4th, 2007, 04:20 AM
Aeryn- Farscape: Really dramatic when it happened, even if it wasn't permanent.

John Crichton- Farscape: Not many shows will kill their main character off. It was never answered whether or not the living John or the dead John was the "real John".

D'argo- Farscape: Surprised me. Really felt bad after all that time getting to know him as a character to.

Crais- Farscape: Hugely dramatic death scene complete with a huge "**** you all" send off speach to his various enemies. Destroyed an entire Peacekeeper command carrier in the process, and those things were most certainly not dropping like flies all over the place.

Admiral Cain- Battlestar Galactica: Very powerful and realistic death scene. Great acting in this one.

Mantrid- Lexx: To kill him they had to collapse an entire universe. That's noteworthy.

Boromir- Lord of the rings: Ridiculous manic rampage through enemy troops while being filled full of arrows. Took way more than it should have to actually stop him.

That's all I can think of at the moment. 3 picks left.

The Signal, are you allowing campaigning yet, or do I have to wait till the first round?

(Because I really want Jerry and Frank in there!!!)

In case The Signal allows campaigning I'm going to go ahead and do it now:
The death of Frank Poole in 2001 is one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen. It gave me nightmares! (OK, so I was just a kid when I saw it, but it still disturbs me to this day.) The fact that there is no blood or gore, no big explosions, and no sound just intensifies it. HAL commits a cold, heartless, cruel murder against someone with whom he plays chess, and converses regularly. He was just complimenting Frank on his sketches a couple of days before. The terror we observe without being able to hear the victim or see his face is remarkable. To me this is the epitome of the phrase: "In space, no one can hear you scream."

Jerry's death in "Enemy Mine" is completely different. While I've never quite decided whether or not I like that movie as a whole....it seems to go on way too long and wander all over the place....I loved the relationship between Jerry and Davidge. (Funny how if you didn't know better, you'd think Jerry was the human and Davidge was the alien just from the names.) After all they go through to become friends, Jerry dies rather quietly in childbirth, leaving Davidge all alone exept for this new life that he has no idea how to take care of. While Jerry seems to accept his own death, Davidge is faced with incredible loneliness, incredible fear for the future of the baby, the frustration of losing the being with whom he worked so hard to communicate and live, and the grief of losing his best friend. I thought it was a beautiful and touching scene.

Yup

Right, because theres still a lot of votes left to be cast I'll leave the voting open for another 24 hours :)

Also, if anyone wanted to vote Darla through, that would be the worst thing in the world. For those who don't know, she was a vampire with no soul. Through a miracle she managed to conceive a living child, who had a soul. She shared his soul for the pregnancy, and so, when she realised that she could not give birth to her son because vampires cannot give life (and a cesarean was impossible), and because she couldn't stand the thought that she would lose the soul and the ability to love her child she staked herself, ending her (second) life so that her son may live his. (love that scene)

Eep!

She needs a nomination first right?

10. Darla (1) whoever votes her through gets green!

That is one of the best scenes of the entire series. :D

Can we vote for bad guys? In that case:

- The Emperor – Star Wars Ep. 6 (NEW)
I knew there was someone I was forgetting! - and now I'm all out of votes. :(

I was in the middle of posting this when GateWorld went arse over elbow yesterday, so:

10. Mantrid- Lexx - End of the Universe (3rd and through)

10. (Haven't decided yet) Thanks for putting Mantrid through, Thunderstorm. :)

5. The Emperor – Star Wars Ep. 6 (2nd vote)
6. Doyle - Angel - "Hero" (New)

And I'm not sure if the Final Destination films count as fantasy so if not then ignore this but:

7. Ashley and Ashlynn - Final Destination 3 - In the tanning booth, one of the most disturbing and truly awful, but epic death scenes ever.

With my first vote, i'm going to go with the great man himself (though i'm not 100% on the spelling)

1. Donald Gennaro (AKA the Lawyer from Jurassic Park, 2nd vote i think)

Hmm which Darla death to pick ? I like all 3 of them (including from Buffy S1, Angel s2) but to try to get it through.

2. Darla - Angel : Lullaby (at least the 2nd vote)

3. The Judge - Buffy : Innocence (2nd vote, i think)

4. Smeagol (AKA Gollum) - Lord of the Rings : Return of the King

5. Crow - Firefly : The Train Job (not sure, probably 2nd vote)

Also forgot more Whedon love with

6. Cordelia Chase - Angel : You're Welcome (at least 2nd vote)

Arrgghh, i promise this is the final edit. If all shows in the 'Fantasy' folder on GateWorld are admissable, then,
Prison Break Season 2 Spoilers !

7. David "Tweener" Apolkis - Prison Break : Buried

Description of Mantrid- Lexx - End of the Universe:

Major spoilers:

Mantrid spent most of the second series of Lexx having his drones tear apart the universe to make more drones. By "End of the Universe" the universe had pretty well been converted and Mantrid set his sights on the Lexx crew. They tricked him into ganging up on them, causing the massive gravitational collapse and destruction of the universe. Incredibly the Lexx was spit out into another universe, along with a small piece of Mantrid (ranting "I destroyed a universe! I destroyed a universe! I destroyed a universe!"), which Xev stomped like a bug ("And we destroyed YOU!").

The most amazing "hoist with his own petard" ever! The scale of the episode was breathtaking.

Description of Blake, Soolin, Dayna, Tarrant, Vila and Avon - Blake's 7 - Blake:

I'm publicly spoiling this one because just about every Blake's 7 article and webpage does.

Blake's 7 was a show about a small group of thieves, smugglers, and freedom fighters roaming the galaxy trying to bring down the Federation. Firefly is strongly reminiscent.

Blake had disappeared from the show two years previously. In "Blake", the crew finally tracked him down to a frontier world where they discovered he was working as a bounty hunter for their enemy the Federation. Thanks to a series of deceptions and just plain bad luck, Avon gunned down Blake. The Federation showed up and gunned down Soolin, Dayna, Tarrant, and Vila. That left Avon standing alone in a circle of Federation soldiers. He raised his gun, snarled--and the credits rolled to the sound of two kinds of gunshots.

The fans were livid, but also admitted it was unique, stylish, and kind of fitting.

Description of Adric- Doctor Who - Earthshock:

I may be a bit off in some of the specifics, as it's been awhile since I've seen this.

In "Earthshock" Adric was taken hostage with the crew when Cybermen hijacked a 25th century cargo ship. The Cybermen planned to smash the ship into Earth to annihilate the attendees of a conference that was going to result in an alliance of worlds against the Cybermen. (The Cybermen knew this because their ships had rudimentary time travel ability.) The Cybermen locked the ship's navigation system using a cypher lock that used three large prime numbers as a key. Adric was able to unlock two of the keys but in the process started the ship travelling back through time. At this point the viewer realized why there had been a discussion about the mass extinction of the dinosaurs at the beginning of the episode. Since the conference was no longer in danger, the crew put their efforts into abandoning ship. Not being from Earth himself, Adric had no idea that the ship crashing into Earth was an immutable and necessary event, and he left the escape pod at the last instant, certain he had worked out the last prime number. One last cyberman destroyed the cipher keypad before Adric was able to enter his solution, and Adric was left to await his death in the disintegrating bridge. "Now I'll never know if I was right."

This death was not a cheap shot. It was a genuine tragedy (a heroic action rendered pointless by inevitability) and absorbed the viewer fully. I last saw this episode twenty years ago and my hands are shaking as I type this.

I'll get this out of the way now.

Deaths I’m Supporting

Admiral Cain – Battlestar Galactica TNS - Resurrection Ship, Part IIWasn’t expecting that I can tell ya, I’m not a huge fan of BSG at all, but I saw this and was shocked. Brilliant scene and aftermath

Adric- Doctor Who - Earthshock Companions don’t die, they just don’t! When this happened (a good while before I was even born, so when I first saw it) my reaction was pretty much “”. Died a pointless but nonetheless heroic death
Allen Francis Doyle - Angel- Hero He wasn’t much of a hero, he’d rather have spent his time in a bar, but he didn’t do that, because of what he could do, because of his destiny he helped Angel. But he was still no hero. Doyle knew that, and so, when he, Angel and Cordy realized that the only way to save the day was for Angel, a real hero, to die, Doyle took his place instead and ensured Angel went on fighting, he became a hero.
Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi A villain reforms and in his first act he saves his son, but it costs him his own life. A tragic tale of a tragic hero ends beautifully
Anna Lucia- Lost - Two for the Road “What’re ya doing Michael?????” ‘Nuff said?
Blake, Soolin, Dayna, Tarrant, Vila and Avon - Blake's 7 – Blake That’s one way to end a show….
Boromir - Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring After his moment of weakness he fights to the end, never giving up or showing weakness, made all the better by Sean Bean’s brilliant performance
Captain Jack Harkness - Doctor Who - The Parting of the Ways Companions don’t die! He started as a con man and ended up fighting to slow the Daleks so that the Doctor could win, he saw death and he didn’t flinch, he accepted his fate. What came next is a whole other story
Cordelia Chase – Angel - You're Welcome Used by a Power that Was to come to Earth, Cordy’s body got used up, but that wasn’t the end, comatose, and about to die, Cordy was given a choice. In her absence Team Angel had shacked up with the Big Bad, and Angel had lost his way, so Cordy used her one chance to see her friends one last time and sets Angel on the right road again. What made the whole thing more brilliant is that she knew from the beginning of that ep that she was about to die, but she never let on.
Darla - Angel - LullabyRead my post from a page or two back
Data - Star Trek: NemesisThe android who wanted to human ended up going out doing something that normal humans couldn’t do, facing death to save someone else’s life. The movie was aweful, but at least Data got a send off.
Fred - Angel - A Hole in the WorldWOW! She had no hope, no chance, but she never stopped fighting Illyria’s presence within her, a brilliant ending to the character
Jasper- Children of Men He had the strength to stand up to people he knew would kill him, all to save the life of a child. His dignity and courage were spectacular, and Michael Cane pulled it off perfectly.
Jenny Calendar- Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Passion Trying to undo her mistakes led to Jenny’s death. She wanted to give Angel his soul back and he killed her for it, marking the point of no return for him, and a turning point in the show. After this episode, no Jossverse character was ever safe again
John Crichton - Infinite Possibilities, Pt 2: Icarus Abides Killing off THE main character is a stroke of genius. End of story IMO
Joyce Summers - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I Was Made to Love You/The Body A source of normality in the show ended to further the show along, showing Buffy being forced to grow up. Not so much the death itself, but what it meant for the rest of the characters (and the episode which followed her actual death “The Body” was brilliant)
Obi Wan Kenobi – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Showed us what being a Jedi was all about, he let himself die so that Luke, the one true hope in stopping Vader, could get out alive. Excellent
Tara Maclay – Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Seeing Red Brutal! She was in the show for 2 seasons and when they finally add her to the credits they kill her off! The shock death of the series that I certainly didn’t expect to happen, and it summed up the tragic relationship she and Willow had had over the last season perfectly
The Terminator - T2: Judgment Day A hero ending his own life because he has to. Simple enough, but still effective
Theo - Children of Men Theo was dragged into the story and forced to take center stage when Julian Moore takes a bullet in the neck. He succeeds in his mission only to succumb to his wounds minutes later.
Wash – Serenity Finally makes it to the ground, his piloting skills made sure Serenity got to Mr. Universe’s planet safely, and then he dies of a harpoon to the chest. He died for a higher purpose, to show the ‘verse what it needed to see.
Wesley – Angel - Not Fade Away The most up and down character in the show for the last 3 seasons dies for a pointless cause, he signed up for it, to show the Senior Partners that though they can’t be stopped, the heroes will always fight regardless. He died in the arms of Illyria, who had assumed the form of his dead girlfriend Fred, truly tear-jerking

Just checking, but these votes are for deaths to get eliminated correct ? And since there's roughly 65 deaths on the list, there's 35 of these rounds ?

I can't honestly keep in deaths i haven't seen, so that's the policy i'll follow. Unfortunately, this means ST characters are on the outs with me as i've seen virtually none of the five series nor any of the movies. It's not about ST hate, just that i haven't seen them.
