TIE BREAKER
Shepherd Book (Serenity) VS Boromir (Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring)

Tough choice, Boromir going out in true heroic fashion, or the weak Book, the good man who never ever did wrong (as far as we know so far) dying in Mal’s arms after The Operative’s attack.

My Vote
Boromir to go

Simply because of the touching dialogue of Mal and Book, who never really got on in the show (Mal having lost his faith in the war, and Book being a preacher)

MAL
Just don't move.

BOOK
Can't order me around, boy.
I'm not one of your crew.

MAL
Yes, you are.

Shepherd Book to go.

Boromir's death is one of my favourites from many films purely because you have to stop and watch. You get a glipse at what Boromir truly was all about. Honour, bravery and self-sacrifice. I loved how in the extended cuts of LotR Boromir got such a better write-up. The "for Gondor" scene in Osgiliath is awesome. Plus: Sean Bean. The guy is an absolute legend.

I don't think that it would be true to call Book weak ("Doesn't the Bible have some things to say about killing?" "It's very specific on the subject. It is however rather more vague on the matter of kneecaps") and it's pretty certain that he did plenty of wrong before he found his calling ("I don't give a half a hump if you're innocent or not, so where does that leave you?")

Still and all, Book to go, 'cause damn.

Tricky. Book was an interesting character, and the exchange between him and Mal earlier in the film (I paraphrase: "One of these days you have to tell me how a preacher knows so much about [killing, weaponry, government secret ops etc]" / "No, I really don't" ) is a splendid dark joke when you watch the film again.

But his death was a bit random. Touching, and resonant, but the manner of it was... mreh.

Boromir, who I liked far less, had such an archetypal classic death that I have to say Book to go.

First off, I can't take credit for the list of ship pics in the last tourney, that was RoX, second of all, because besides videos of it happening, its tricky to find sources of info with exactly how they died in there, even wikipedia doesn't always give a true picture. Best thing to do, which some have done, is simply to ask, and someone will explain a death to you :)

What I meant was references to the posts in this thread that have described the remaining deaths, either linked or giving the numbers of the posts. I've been keeping a not-very-thorough list of post numbers myself. Now that we're down to the best of the best the decisions are getting tougher and it's nice to be able to go back and reevaluate.

I suppose now would be a good time to champion my favourite death with a few uneloquent words- that of Joyce Summers from BtVS. Why is it the best death? It's nothing but pain. Joyce was the every mother, and when she dies it feels like nothing short of losing a real parent because she was so much more then just another tv mum- the audience came to truely love her. It is impossible to watch "The Body" without going into shock; in my opinion the best death isn't the one that happens and is over after a few minutes or one episode, not the one that's comforted by a few words and some soft music, but the one that lasts and makes the audience and the characters go through every moment hurting. As for how she died, brilliant. In a show where people died from vampires and demons every episode, and where these killers can be fought and destroyed, to have a most loved character die of something so unfightable makes it all the more difficult- and is a tough lesson on mortality for the Scoobies.

Ah, Joyce... I wouldn't say it's the best death ever, but it was so well done. Buffy, the tough confident Slayer, walks in the door and says "Mom? Mom?" and then, "Mommy?" like she's a little girl.

Her character was so well-developed, too. She started off as the mom everyone loves to hate, grounding Buffy right, left, and center, reminding her not to burn down the school again :p , etc. But she emerged as a very supportive mother, standing up for Buffy when she got expelled from high school, etc.

Joyce Summers isn't anything like a best death for me. The death itself is unremarkable, and there is something so *wrong* about the characters making such a big deal of it in the midst of a show in which people die in every episode.
But there's a difference, Joyce was a mother, someone who they had ALL been close to her for five years, not one of the core four (plus Dawn, Tara and Anya) had anything against her, and she just died. That's totally different to some nameless, faceless teenager getting their neck snapped by a demon, at least, it is to me. To each his own.

Tough call, but I personally rate deaths in terms of real impact (which is why I like Joyce's death, because it has impact, essentially because it's a death they have to deal with personally instead of professionally) and Boromir's was undeniably the more arrowing of the two.

Gandalf to go, for the sake of a really bad pun.

Spock's death was fabulous!!! He went out quoting Dicken's. "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done..." "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one...." "You are and always have been my friend." And then Kirk does the little "Live long and prosper" thing with him through the glass and he sinks to the ground because he is so devastated. He can't even finish his eulogy he was so upset. And Scotty's playing the bagpipes. And then they're all looking out at the end at the new life being created and Kirk says with tears in his eyes that he feels young. I WAS SOBBING!!! I've never ever ever cried so hard at a movie. My brother was giving me strange looks and telling me to calm down. No matter how many times I rewatch The Wrath of Khan, I'm emotionally overwhelmed. Spock's death brings great grief while at the same time providing hope.

Spock's death was well balanced. Usually deaths are over- or under- done so they feel artificial. And they're always conveniently quick, unlike real life. Spock's wasn't, but the director didn't feel the need to try to torture us with it.

In the way that Callista said, the only other TV or movie death I've seen that touches me in that way is the death of Hiroshi and the _Churchhill_ in the Babylon 5 episode "Severed Dreams". I usually end up reaching for a tissue sometime after that.

I always reach this point in every tournament when I perceive that we are voting for favorite shows and favorite characters rather than what the tournament is actualy about. For example, the death of Obei Wan Kenobi is a big nothing death. He just puts his sword down and dies. Now we do get a big reaction from Luke, but he dies as part of a plan and he can still influence the world after death..... I tried to vote this one off weeks ago, but nobody joined me. So I'm sitting here at the keyboard thinking how in the name of Heinlein can Spock be voted off before that stupid "kill me please" scene with Obei-wan and then it becomes clear... Loyalty to Star Wars......

I agree with you on the Obi Wan part. But up to this point I still had deaths on the list hadn't seen/didn't remember. So I figure a death I didn't hate (although wasn't much impressed with) still rates higher than a death i don't know (Joyce) or impressed me so little I don't remember it(Spock).

I wouldn't put Obi Wan in the top 10 either but the others have sadly been voted off so you vote on what you have.

It's been awfully evident in this tournament. And voters seem to prefer being a victim to death with honor. That says interesting things about how people perceive themselves and others.

Personally, I did my research ages ago. Except for strategic choices in the last two weeks, I've just been been sequentially going down my list.

Never saw Crais, in fact I think I would loathe his character, but the Wikipedia descriptions of the episode and his character put him at number two on my list (now #1). Heck of a better send-off than shot down by your lover and drowned. Or accident.

I guess your being more diligent than me. If I don't know the death, I didn't really look it up. But at least for me it's more than just the moment of death. It's what happened before and after and the impact it had on you. Aeryn wasn't really shot down by Crichton (he wasn't her lover yet). It was Scorpius finally succeeding in taking over John's mind. And to get the impact of that you have to have seen the previou half season to see the build up and then the angst of John realizing what happened to late stop anything. and then the devastation Ben Browder portrayed afterward. As with most shows, I think it's something you have to see and I don't think you can understand it just from reading a wiki entry.

I've been lucky in this tourney to still have deaths I didn't know to vote for so I didn't have to vote for the deaths I like (that doesn't sound right ) - and also still have characters whose death really impacted me alot left. Now maybe if I'd followed some of the other shows and experienced those deaths I might think they were better but it's just a tourney and I'm not going to track down and watch episodes or movies for all the entries I haven't seen. Well over half the charaacters I didn't know.

I'm not sure what the solution is. Maybe limit it to entries everyone knows but then I think you'd have a small group of entries or a smaller group of players. I know I've tried to be conscientious in my voting and that's the best I can do.

And for the record, I think the best death I've scene portraryed was Cyril O'Reily from the Tv show OZ. Now that was one well written episode, well acted, directed episode. Too bad it was the 2nd to last of the series and the last was a piece of crap and should be used as how not to kill of characters (or end a show).

Loyalty to Star Wars......Hey, I tried to join in with you. :P I voted for him several times but then voting dropped back down to one (me) so I was then voting strategically to save others I liked more even though I'd have rather him gone before either of the ones I was voting for.....

I can't say I agree, I liked Obi's death better than Spock's, one got a reaction out of me, the other didn't simple as. That's why I wanted Joyce to win this one, because she was one of two deaths that I actually got choked up over, the other being Doyle. I think it may seem like bias with Whedon deaths getting further than Star Wars, and Star Wars goes further than Trek, but IMO its simply because some shows/movies do deaths better than others, Trek has never managed to get a great death IMO (okay, Jadzia, but that's all). But thats just my opinion, take it or leave it.
