Captain James T. Kirk - Star Trek: Generations (Okay, I can't remember precisely how he died, which can not be a good sign.)
Kirk died doing what he does--saving the day. Seemed very appropriate to me.
Specifically, he and Capt. Picard were trying to prevent the launch of a missile that would destroy a star, and consequently a populated world and the Enterprise. Kirk jumped onto a collapsing bridge to deactivate the missile's defenses.

What You Leave behind pt 2 spoilers
After the Cardassians rebel against the Dominion, the Founder orders the Jem'Hadar to level a major Cardassian city to basically scare them back in line. The plan backfires as all of Cardassia Prime uprises and several Cardassians, including Damar, a Bajoran Major Kira and a shamed ex-Cardassian spy Garak, storm the Dominion HQ on Cardassia Prime. Damar dies during this attack, which he led, and orders the fight to continue fighting, effectively making himself a martyr.
It was awesome. Especially since he was such a hated character one season previously. If someone else could add to that, it'd be grand. I haven't seen it in about a year and my memory's a little rusty. My description doesn't do it justice, the scene was amazing.
DS9 Rocks.

Frank Poole (2001) (haven't seen)
Dave and especially Frank were worried that their supposedly infallible onboard computer HAL was malfunctioning. HAL had apparently misdiagnosed an impending component failure and mission control had suddenly announced that HAL's sibling unit was experiencing errors. HAL suggested putting back the component and waiting for it to fail to test just what was faulty. Everyone agreed, but Frank and Dave also decided if it was HAL that was at fault they were going to disconnect the computer. Frank travelled the length of the ship in an EVA pod and spacewalked to put back the component. While he was working, the pod cut through his air hose.
Assuming the version I saw last week on TV wasn't edited for content, what you actually see in the film is Frank working. Then the pod, floating some distance away, turns and begins to move forward with its mechanical arms extended. Then Frank, seen from behind, floats away into space, thrashing and trying to reach back for the broken air hose. It's horrible, but extremely short, a couple of seconds. The next few minutes depict Dave going out in another pod to retrieve him.

Hudson (Aliens) (can't remember)
Londo + G'Kar (Babylon 5) (haven't seen)
Well, I was hoping someone else would answer Hudson and Londo + G'Kar. If someone can do a better job, please do.
*
Hudson (Aliens)
I haven't seen Aliens myself, but apparently Hudson is the guy who seems to be a coward, but when the situation goes to hell he's the one who stands rearguard, holding the line and cussing the enemy at the top of his lungs.
Many movies and TV shows since have done their own versions of his last stand. I remember people kept asking J. Michael Straczynski if Garibaldi in the Babylon 5 episode "Babylon Squared" was an Aliens reference.
*
Londo + G'Kar (Babylon 5)
Londo (a Centauri) and G'Kar (a Narn) were enemies their entire lives, as their people were enemies. When Londo first met G'Kar, he recognized him from a prophetic dream--he and G'Kar would kill each other--which gave him a particular hatred for G'Kar. Over the course of the Babylon 5 TV series each plotted against the other many times, but they also developed a grudging respect for each other. Sixteen years later, Londo was Centauri Emperor and under the control of a Drakh "keeper" which had possessed him. Slowly and subtly, Londo was able to arrange things to foil the Drakh plans. When Londo's plans reached a critical point at which his keeper couldn't possibly overlook what he had done, Londo asked G'Kar to kill him so the keeper couldn't warn the Drakh and bring down retribution on the Centauri people. G'Kar obliged, but the keeper killed him too.
In a nutshell, Londo gave himself over to his greatest fear to accomplish the one thing he believed in, and G'Kar gave his life to protect a people who had always been his mortal enemies.

I don't think anything's been edited, that sounds right to me. I think one of the things that made it so completely terrifying to me is that there is no sound at all. Not even music. He's utterly alone and even though you can't see his face, you can see the horrible panic. Yikes, it still gives me the creeps to think about it.
Also, after Dave does finally retrieve Frank, he is forced to let him go again so that Dave can use the pod's arms to open the ship when HAL won't let him in. The last you see of Frank, he is floating silently off into space.

It was just his time to be flushed...... btw, how did we forget John Sheridan? His death was a three season long epic theme and the subject of an entire episode? MY BAD !

I think that by definition, a death that could be forgotten by everyone involved for the duration of the nominations process shouldn't win, since it obviously lacked something if it didn't spring immediately to mind. There are a few I've thought of since, but even the ones that I thought were really good obviously didn't really have that emotional punch. I guess that, because it was epic, Sheridan's death just Wastelanded.
Which is why so many Joss deaths went in, I reckon, because what he's good at it the stealth kill, where the entire audience just sits up and simultaneously gives vent to the same swear word.

The last you see of Frank, he is floating silently off into space.
yeah ... being quite a woossss when it comes to horror flicks and such, combined with being a huge fan of the space race (have attended several shuttle launches and all) ... i remember seeing it and you are sooooo right .... the utter silence was genius ... it made the scene so much more agonizing ... you just wanted to breath for him ... and since it is something you can only imagine ... i mean you can't truly relate ... it was mortifying.:o *takes a deep breath*

Can anyone tell about Data and Jadzia Dax? I can't find anything useful on them, any more than I could find anything useful on Gul Damar.

Data takes his own life while destroying the Romulan super ship which is charging it's super weapon. The film in which this happens is called Star Trek: Nemesis and is regarded by most Trek fans as a bomb.
Jadzia Dax dies by getting in the way of Gul Dukat (Cardassian) who is possessed by the Pa' Wraith (bascially, the Satan of Bjoran religion). There is a touching goodbye with her new husband Worf. This happens at the end of season 6 of DS-9 after a number of great episodes about Worf / Jadzia, so for those who followed the series, the death has a lot of impact. Any DS-9 episode list will give you more.

Could someone please fill me in on Fred and Wesley's deaths in Angel ? I've not seen all the eps yet.
Fred:
After Gunn's implant giving him complete knowledge of all demon and human law begins to wear off, he heads to the doctor who implanted it. The doctor offer him a deal, get something which is being held up in customs out for him, and he'll recharge the implant. Gunn, of course, does this. A little while later a large sarcophagus arrives in the lab, which Fred analyses. She touches a jewel on the sarcophagus and something sprays her in the face. Shortly after, she fell ill, she was dying. Turns out, the package Gunn let go was the sarcophagus of an ancient demon, an "Old One" called Illyria (not that he knew any of this) and the essence of Illyria was consuming Fred and taking her body as a vessel. While Angel and Spike headed to England to the place where the long dead old ones are kept guarded, Wes took Fred home. Angel and Spike found that they could save Fred, but it would kill everyone from LA to their location on the way, they knew they couldn't do it, and realised they would have to let Fred die. Back in LA Fred's organs are slowly being destoryed by the essence of Illyria, she asks Wes to read to her as she dies, and eventually, in the arms of the man she loved, she faded away. Moments later her body began to shake and Illyria took control. To make matters worse, Fred's soul was consumed when Illyria took over, meaning she was gone forever, and couldn't come back.
Wes:
In the season finale Team Angel plan one final fight, they will go up against "The Circle of the Black Thorn" the most senior representatives of The Senior Partners on earth, they know they will almost certainly die and so they go out and live their final day however they want, all except Wes. Wes seemed to have died inside since Fred's death, and so he stayed and nursed a beaten Illyria (who had crossed over to Team Angel having realised her armies were gone and she was alone in the world) back to strength, claiming there was no perfect day. Each of Team Angel was assigned a member of the Black Thorn to kill, Wes' being Cyvus Vail, the sorceror who we last saw when Connor came back into the picture a few episodes previously. Wes tried his best but was mortally wounded by the sorceror. Illyria arrived to check up on him, having killed her targets, and finally he allowed her to take on the form of Fred as he died. He died in her arms slowly and painfully, but ultimately bravely. In her fury, Illyria, who Cyvus had underestimated, killed Wes' killer with a single punch the the head. Wes was the only member of Team Angel to by the hand of a target that night (though Lindsey was killed by Lorne on Angel's orders), the fate of the others is unknown.

An edited clip of Jadzia Dax (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2uWvsqQD84)'s death. It's in slow motion and takes a while so fast forward to around 2.30. It conveys the main points but it was better in the show IMO.

I do enjoy the last scene where Fred actually dies, as I think it was really well acted by bother Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof, but I dislike the vast majority of "A Hole in the World" as I find the writing horrific in many places, and the episode as a whole could have been much more subtle for me

Y'all probably think I'm weird for voting for Gandalf so early, but I've always had a nitpick with his death. He bravely stood between the demon and his friends, but THEN the bridge collapses and he’s hanging from the edge and NO one bothers to rush out to try to help him. They just watch as he loses his grip and falls to his death. That has just always bothered me.
Guess I shouldn’t base the impact of his death on what the rest did or did not do because obviously his death plays a greater role in the other movies, but at that point in time I found his death somewhat needless.

Yeah, well, he's just told them they cannot deal with the thing. He's told them to run and just look at it, it's huge and fire-like and OWMYGAWWD. I think running to help would mean more dead. Keep in mind they have all given their pledge to get Frodo and the ring to Mordor, not to make sure nobody dies. Gandalf is like the "in charge" dude and from the moment he makes the Balok fall and he says "run you fools" can't be more than a second or two.

but Frodo did attempt to go and was held back ... it was an obvious "you have to" move on for the greater good (the whole story is a book of the greater good ... hard to accept sometimes ... especially when you are fond of a character ... must admire a writer who is brave enough to make the move) .... and who could really overcome this thing .... and then his sacrifice would be for naught .... and deep down you had to think he was going to pull out some magical force and escape ... which technically .... the whole scene was paralyzing for me, it was one of the strongest in the whole series to me ... extremely poignant.

i think you summed it all up in that one statement ... Gandalf was not the only sacrifice ... there had to be some to make the point of the struggle (i mean the scene with Shelob and eeek ... i know no death but ... could you get much closer ... *shivers*) ... it couldn't be painless and easy!
as horrifying as it was ... was there really another choice?:(

I get that about his death, but like I said, I had a weird reason for voting for him this early. :D
Don't get me wrong I LOVE the LOTR movies. They rival the original Star Wars trilogy for me, but the final moments before his death just bug me....
