Space Gates?
How come the Milky Way has no Space Gates?
They do have boosters on them; but whats their use if they're all stationed on the ground?

The Goa'uld probably relocated any space gates to the ground to make them more convenient for them to use where
as in Pegasus the ancients probably put the gates in space as an attempt to slow the wraith down at least until the wraith developed their own gate ships such as dartsComment

Or the Wraith put them in space to stop the most populated worlds from being evacuated. Wouldn't be good for their most abundant source of food to be able to get up and leave. The Wraith being responsible would explain why the Milky Way has none in space.Originally posted by gavo2o View Post

There could be any number of reasons for a gate to be in space. In Horizon we have something which is really an overgrown form of them similar to the functions of an Ori Supergate, and there may be others likt that. Let's remember that during the start of Season 7, it was stated that less than a quarter of gates within our galaxy's network had actually had probes or teams sent to them, and so there may be larger types that have the same purpose the SGC simply hasn't discovered yet...
There may be a more practical reason why normal gates are only found on planets, however. In Into the Fire from Season 3, we know the Goa'uld did try and create a ship similar to a Death Glider that was capable of gate-travel, but very few Jaffa could pilot it effectively for combat.

Stargate's are built for people to go through, not ships. If they were built for ships they would be much bigger. We know the Ancients had superior energy generation capability through ZPMs. It doesn't take a lot of energy in comparison to powering Atlantis shield/cloak for example. The Ancients easily had the capacity to build bigger gates requiring more power but they didn't (as far as we know from what has been discovered.) Therefore the Stargate's are not intended for ship travel.
The gates in space in Pegasus were likely moved there or built there because of the Wraith in order to slow them down before they developed the technology to build ships. It's also possible that the Wraith put them there. Then it would be a quicker and easier journey to and from a hive ship which is, obviously, in space near by or orbiting a planet.
I'm also more inclined to believe Puddle Jumpers were an afterthought the Ancients had long after the gates were up and running.Comment

* Space gates do not have DHDs floating around. They are probably there to make it harder on the Wraith. They cannot send ground troops through a space gate (unless they are suicidal) and they also cannot dial out of a space gate. As far as we know, the Ancients had no main enemy while living in the Milky Way (well, besides the Ori).
