    CABLE

    In 'Stargate,' stunning
    hits for Sci-Fi Channel

Two original series push it into top 10 for month

    By Diego Vasquez

For years, the Sci-Fi Channel has fought against its image as a network airing only reruns of "The Twilight Zone" and other cult classics of earlier decades. It's wanted to be more than that, and at last it has become so through its “Stargate” franchise. It's done so rather quietly, and with quite a boost in ratings.

For the month of August, Sci-Fi tied for No. 9 among total primetime viewers on ad-supported cable, with a 0.6 rating, a 20 percent increase over the same month last year.

Similarly, among viewers 18-49, the network tied for No. 7 on ad-supported cable in primetime, averaging a 0.6 rating for the month.

Those performances follow a record-setting July for Sci-Fi, the first time it ever averaged a 1.1 household primetime rating during the month.

Leading the way for the network is its “Stargate” franchise, which includes “Stargate SG-1,” now in its eighth season, and the new “Stargate Atlantis,” which debuted on July 16.

Sci-Fi must have thought it had it good when “Stargate SG-1” kicked off its new season on July 9. That episode remains the highest-rated and most-watched episode of “Stargate SG-1” to air on the network, as 3.22 million total viewers tuned in.

But the following week, on July 16, Sci-Fi launched a companion show titled “Stargate Atlantis,” and the two-hour premiere promptly broke all of the network’s previous original series records.

The premiere brought in 4.19 million total viewers, which made it the highest-rated and most-watched premiere of any series in the network’s history, the highest-rated and most-watched episode of any series to air on Sci-Fi, and the first time an episode of a Sci-Fi series delivered more than 4 million viewers.

The show was also the No. 1 program on cable that day among viewers 18-49 and 25-54.

“Stargate SG-1” follows Gen. Jack O’Neill and his team of soldier-explorers, all of whom have the power to travel from planet-to-planet instantaneously. Along the way the group meets allies, forges diplomatic ties, establishes trade, and fights off intergalactic terrorists.

“Stargate Atlantis” is basically the “CSI: Miami” of the franchise in that it features a younger crew than "SG-1" and the storylines allow for the possibility of interaction between characters on both shows. It's not a spinoff that takes place at another point in time, but a companion show that is happening simultaneously. But these explorers aren’t able to return to their own galaxy or to Earth.

Original “SG-1” episodes air Friday nights at 9 p.m. and are followed by original episodes of “Atlantis” at 10 p.m.

There's a variety of charts at the site as well, but this one I thought was the most interesting:
