PLEASE READ!

Who is the best hero ever to appear in Sci-Fi or Fantasy, be it a movie or a television show. Is it an indevidual like Luke Sywalker, or maybe a group like the Justice League, lets find out!

The Tournament will run as follows

Stage One (Round Zero) Three Days of voting for your favourite heroes, anyone with 3 votes ges through to the next Stage. Everyone gets ten votes, and those are for the three days. Once we have a list of 50 heroes we move onto:

Stage Two (Round One - Final Round)
We vote for the heroes we like the least, knocking one out per day until we have a winner! (This stage will begin once I finish the "Greatest Villain Tournament", which will probably be about Wednesday)

NOTE: In order to make your cotes count, check through other peoples votes (and my occasional updates) to check to see if someone is already trough, otherwise you are wasting a vote.

NOTE 2: Please, to make everyone's life easier, tell us, no matter how obvious it seems, where the heroes comes from, their show/movie etc

EXTRA RULES

As with my other tournements, no heroes from the Stargate franchise are permitted
Anti Heroes ARE permitted

Neo (The Matrix)

The crew of the Battlestar Galactica (Battlestar Galactica TNS)

It's OK to nominate the crew of the Serenity and the Battlestar Galactica individually and as a group, right?

As for the crews of BSG and Serenity, I'd say keep Serenity as indeviduals, but BSG as the whole crew.

Sure, thanks :)

Darth Vader (Star Wars) Anti-hero maybe? More of a tragic hero, but a hero nontheless, though if you don't mind, I'll list him as "Anakin Skywalker"

Angel (Buffy: TVS and Angel) Hero and/or Anti-hero? Just a regular hero really, there was that one point in S2 (with Darla), and another in S3 (with Wes) of Angel when he went more "Anti-hero" but by S4 he was back to hero again, wow, Joss sure can write 'em lol

LOL I know, that's what had me thinking, 'cos he is a reformed vampire with the potential to turn evil again. I actually prefer anti-heroes to the straight-cut good guy.

So do I, some heroes are too perfect for me (Superman for example) I like a grittier character, ie. Batman or Angel

Callista

1) I'll cast the 3rd vote for Han Solo (Star Wars)
2) 2nd vote for Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark [assuming those movies count as sci-fi/fantasy])
3) 2nd vote for Captain Kirk (Star Trek)

Boy, I'm having trouble thinking of heroes. I'll have to mull this over and get back to you.

Callista
September 15th, 2006, 11:55 AM
All right, I thought of 4 more

4) Fox Mulder (X-Files)
5) Dana Scully (X-Files----Where would Mulder be without her)
6) Princess Leia (Star Wars----much tougher and cooler than her Mom!!)
7) Turanga Leela (Futurama----One-eyed, funny, tough and smart)

Can you tell I'm trying to get some ladies into the fray?

Thank you for selecting the BSG as a crew- too painful to pick and choose!

1. Ellen Ripley- Alien movies
2. The Crew of the Battlestar Galactica- Battlestar Galactica TNS 2nd vote
3. President Laura Roslin- Battlestar Galactica TNS

My top ten:

1. Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley (Alien franchise) (2nd vote) (Icon)
2. Commander John Crichton (Farscape) (2nd vote) (One of the few SF heroes to react to first contact by going all-out, jumping-flea crazy)
3. Arthur Dent (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) (Understood the importance of tea)
4. Eowyn (Lord of the Rings) (not as good as in the books, but I still want to know what ****** would pick the elf?)
5. Kerr Avon (Blake's 7) (the finest ******* the genre has ever produced)
6. The Doctor (Doctor Who) (3rd vote) (...I mean, The Doctor, right?)
7. Sapphire and Steel (Sapphire and Steel) (as a double act, of course)
8. Professor Bernard Quatermass (Quatermass Franchise) (one for the straightforward scientists)
9. Romanaveloratrelunda (Doctor Who/Gallifrey) (proof that The Doctor isn't the only Time Lord capable of kissing arse and taking names)
10. Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride) (because fantasy is getting short shrift thus far)

My obligatory Joss Whedon vote (although I tend to feel he writes better characters than your actual heroes) would have gone to Melaka Fray, but you stipulated movies and TV. Likewise Hester Shaw, my favourite sociopath, has to take a back seat and spectate, along with Iorek Byrnison and Taran the pig keeper (because I refuse to vote in the Taran from the Disney version of The Book of Three, so confusingly dubbed The Black Cauldron).

Heroic quotes will be essential...... Thanks Realm of X

As requested, a few heroic quotes in support of my choices. Note that these aren't votes, I already made those.

"I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
- Ripley

"Humans! Are! Superior!"
- Commander John Crichton

"This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays."
"Is there any tea on this spaceship?"
- Arthur Dent

"Do what you will, but I will hinder it if you may...You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
- Eowyn

"I'm not expendable, I'm not stupid, and I'm not going!"
- Avon

"I've got five billion languages and you haven't got one way of stopping me, so if anybody's going to shut up, it's you!"
- The Doctor

"Find every photograph ever taken of you. Burn them. Never have another one taken."
- Sapphire and Steel

“The ancient destructive urges...grow more deadly as our populations approach in size and complexity those of ancient Mars. Every war crisis, witch-hunt, race riot and purge...is a reminder and warning. We are the Martians. If we cannot control the inheritance within us…this will be their second dead planet!”
- Professor Bernard Quatermass

"Count, far be it from me to query this woman's competency as a doctor, but where I come from, you don't cut off a patient's head if you wish to cure their ankle!"
- Romanadveloratrelunda

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
- Inigo Montoya

And please... somebody vote for Spike (Buffy/Angel), I give you a reason :P :
"My soul is wrapped in harsh repose,
Midnight descends in raven-colored clothes,
But soft...Behold!
A sunlight beam,
Cutting a swath of glimmering gleam.
My heart expands,
'Tis grown a bulge in it,
Inspired by your beauty... effulgent."

Not bad, but, technically, that's not Spike. Personally, I think this one sums him up better:

"You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll fight and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other 'til it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. Love's not brains, children, it's blood. Blood, screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's *****, but at least I'm man enough to admit it."

And I voted for Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi too, so they should need only one vote.

Did my votes not get counted?
No they werent counted because they were posted after I started to post the results, I went away and didnt refresh the page when I came back (which was dumb because it was over an hour *head/desk*), I thought I'd gotten them all though :S I will make sure to add them to the next count :)

I'll admit to being out of touch, but how is that heroic? I do hope we're not going to have another, "it's my favorite show so I'm voting for it no matter what the category is" tournament.......

Definition of "hero"

American Heritage Dictionary

1. In mythology and legend, a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods.
2. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.
3. A person noted for special achievement in a particular field: the heroes of medicine.

Well, as I noted earlier, for my money Whedon writes great characters, but although his characters all have their heroic moments, they are not really what you might call heroes, simply because he makes heroism something that is within reach of everyone.

Spike's heroic nature, such as it is, is in the genuinely romantic mould of the quester; he is always seeking, always pushing to prove himself to his love. By the end, he's even mastered the quality of self-sacrifice. Nonetheless, there's always something tragically farcical about his existence, which is why that quote sums him up so well. It demonstrates Spike's quintessential traits of passionate devotion and honesty; he understands love and he understand himself.

The reason I put my quote of Spike's recitted poem in 'Not Fade Away' is that was the last poem William aka Spike wrote before he's turned into a Vampire, and that's also the poem he recite on his (what he believe of) last night as a Vampire (with a soul).
It's actually a journey for him, from a nobody, to a ruthless villain without remorse, to a vampire with a nagging consciense.
To quote your AHD description, Spike knows that Angel has ask everyone of them a next to impossible tasks, to kill their enemy that is so strong & evil with no real hope to get out alive, it's practically an impossible mission but they have to do it because nobody else would do it (or even know about it), so it is an unpopular war.
That is the reason for me to nominate all Angel's friends as heroes, I would put Gunn/Lorne too but Gunn did really bad on Fred/Illyria thing & Lorne left at the end, so less hero-ism for them.

My 10th nomination :

River Tam (Firefly/Serenity, 'I ate a bug' :P, I would quote what she said to Simon before she went out to fight, but I don't know the real words :o)

Mr Prophet
September 18th, 2006, 01:37 PM
So, we have our list now (was it the sheer number of entries on the Greatest SF movie tournament list that led to the cap on numbers this time?). Here's the Prophet's utterly uninformed reckoning on the form.

1. Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly) - Good odds; the fact that Serenity is both recent and wildly popular makes Mal a hot favourite. I'm not sure I rate him as a hero myself - BDH or no - but he might make the cut as an antihero.
2. Han Solo (Star Wars) - Classic antihero and certainly iconic. Star Wars has a timeless cut, but Lucas seems to have decided that the franchise didn't need a Han and the new generation of fans might feel the same.
3. The Doctor (Doctor Who) - Better odds now than at any time in the last twenty years; the new series has revitalised his fame. Still, perhaps, not quite a big enough noise in the States to clean up.
4. Captain James T. Kirk (Star Trek) - Iconic, but somewhat tarnished of late. The advent of the disapproving phrase 'Kirking' could tell against him. He'll probably go the distance, but not quite make the finish.
5. Angel (Buffy: TVS and Angel) - Angel's contradictory character - dark and serious, yet a figure of fun and mockery - makes him an appropriately dark horse in this race. Long odds, but may come from the outside.
6. Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - A more classic hero, walking the Cambellian journey despite the gender inversion. Much better odds than Angel, but perhaps not so good as Mal.
7. Princess Leia (Star Wars) - One of the classic strong chicks, Leia might yet be overshadowed by her male counterparts.
8. Commander Susan Ivanova (Babylon 5) - Long odds. B5's weak final season and failing franchise are likely to tell against our Susan with the younger voters.
9. Ellen Ripley- (Alien movies) - Serious icon status and one of the toughest of all tough chicks, but Alien's horror roots may attract genre snobbery and the third and fourth installments in the franchise have done her no favours.
10. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (ST:TNG) - Superb character, but most of his conventional hero work was in the TNG films, which were not the greatest ever.
11. Luke Skywalker (Star Wars) - Likely to suffer from a generational split with Anakin. Still, the lightsabre must count for something.
12. Dana Scully (X-Files) - It's a long time since the end of the X-Files and TV fame is fickle. Moreover, her fading seasons as a blubbering, hormonal wreck may tell against her.
13. Zoe Washburne (Firefly) - Good odds, although in truth she's more of a sidekick than a hero. Her principle characteristic is not the decisive action of a hero, but dogged loyalty. Still; she's got popularity.
14. Jayne Cobb (Firefly) - Long odds. Jayne is definitely a supporting character and has few or no genuinely heroic moments.
15. Spike (Buffy/Angel) - His heroism is questionable in Buffy, stronger in Angel, although he has not one but two heroic deaths. Evens.
16. Neo (The Matrix) - Long shot. Heroic, but not really interesting. Even within The Matrix, the supporting characters are more interesting than the hero.
17. Indiana Jones (Indiana Jones Franchise) - Another bona fide icon. Good chances if most of the voters are over twenty.
18. Harry Potter (Harry Potter) - Very long odds; he's current and popular, but not very heroic.
19. The crew of the Battlestar Galactica (Battlestar Galactica TNS) - Like most of the ensemble candidates, the crew will no doubt suffer from people voting them off because individual members of the crew are not liked. Middling odds, but I reckon this one will go to a single name.
20. John Crichton (Farscape) - A true original, but he has two strikes against him: Farscape lacks the broad exposure of most movies and many shows, and there is a groundswell of anti-BB feeling on Gateworld.
21. X-Men - Like the crew of the BSG, the X-Men may suffer from individual members who are not liked, as well as their disappointing third movie outing.
22. Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) - c.f. Luke Skywalker.
23. Ambassador Delenn (Babylon 5) - A little too quite to nail the action hero votes, and there are perhaps too many B5 entrants for any one to do really well. Still, the Big Brother style voting could result in an all B5 final.
24. G'Kar (Babylon 5) - Probably my favourite of the B5 entrants. A strong character, but possibly too flawed to make a good showing as a hero.
25. John Sheridan (Babylon 5) - Conversely, Sheridan suffers from an absence of flaws that led to a certain blandness. I'd rate Jeff Sinclair higher, myself.
26. Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride) - Classic lines, classic swordfight, truly heroic final showdown, but will he manage to overcome the fact that he is a) a fantasy character (look at this list; as you might expect on Gateworld, SF is claiming the lion's share) and b) a comedy character.
27. Ker Avon (Blake's 7) - Unquestioned presence and true antihero charm, but he's a character from a 1970s British SF show. If he makes the distance, it will probably because people don't know him to vote him off.
28. Major Kira (Trek: Ds9) - Another entrant who feels like more of a character than a hero, but she had her moments. Decent odds, but ultimately an outsider.
29. Simon Tam (Firefly) - More of a hero than Jayne, but less than Mal; probably on a par with Zoe.
30. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars) - A man who has only ever lost a lightsabre duel against one opponent (Darth Tyrannous) must enjoy some good odds and the combination of Alec Guiness and Ewan MacGregor has to stand him in good stead.
31. River Tam (Firefly) - For my money, not a hero. She has her moment, but even at that moment, she's basically doing something she has been programmed to do. I'll be voting against her early, but I suspect I shall be doing so for many rounds.
32. Batman (Batman Franchise) - Very solid, iconic ground. Short odds.
33. Fox Mulder (X-Files) - His obsessive, paranoid nature might tell against Fox; I'd give him slightly longer odds than his partner.
34. Turanga Leela (Futurama) - Some strong qualities may yet be countered by the fact that she is a comedy character, which tends to make people take characters less seriously.
35. Benjamin Sisko (DS-9) - Despite some strengths, Ben Sisko's is in many ways a lesser ST captain. He'll go far, but not to the end.
36. O'Brien (Trek: DS-9) - An interesting call, and a rare appearance of an enlisted man in this list. I like him, but I'm not sure he'll last the distance.
37. V (V for Vendetta) - I can't really say, but he may be too much of a cypher and too anti to even be an antihero.
38. Kaylee Frye (Firefly) - Very sweet and very brave, but I don't rate Kaylee as a hero.
39. Hoban "Wash" Washburne (Firefly) - Another hot tip, his role in Serenity boosting a loveable comedy sidekick to heroic status.
40. Aragorn (Lord Of The Rings) - Aragorn packs some serious iconic stature, and that fight in Fellowship might carry him far, despite coming from a fanstasy background.
41. Yoda (Star Wars) - Despite his lightsabre-fu, Yoda is really a mentor, not a hero. I don't rate him, but he has legs and may run.
42. Marty Mcfly (Back to the Future) - There is a realism in Back to the Future that makes Marty's courage all the more heroic. I doubt he'll go the distance, but I wish him well.
43. Wolverine (X-Men) - So, does he count as one of the X-Men as well as his own man? Good chances, although Last Stand might scupper him.
44. Arthur Dent (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) - I don't think Arthur will do so well, but I maintain that there's a steadfast heroism in his persistent resistance to the galaxy's attempts to change him.
45. Eowyn (Lord of the Rings) - Probably the strongest fantasy contender; a real tragic heroine, with serious bottle.
46. Kosh Naranek (Babylon 5) - Another character with heroic moments, but possibly not a real hero. Still; he gets some enigmatic props.
47. Vincent (Beauty and the Beast) - I don't know him well, but I'm not sure he'll go that far. I'm not sure that a beast who has more than one beauty is really pulling his weight, whatever the behind-the-scenes reasons.
48. Buck Rogers (Buck Rogers) - Buck on the other hand is carrying his own weight, and quite a bit of it, which is not good in a jumpsuit. Neither Gil Gerard nor Buster Crabbe exactly flattered by fashion.
49. Superman - An unquestioned hero, but not the most interesting.
50. Sam Beckett (Quantum Leap) - A good shout from the outfield. I'm liking Sam's prospects for the finals, if not for the win.
51. Spiderman - He does whatever a spider can, but can a spider win a greatest hero vote off? Who knows.

And that's the form.

Okay, I f*****d up, when asked about the crews of the X-men and BSG, what I meant to say was that you shouldnt vote for the little people, who occasionally appear, and to keep them as a group, but still vote for the major characters, as people did with Wolverine. Therefore, I am opening up the votes for the crews of BSG and the X-men, and there are TEN places for them, everyone gets one vote and if they vote for someone, that hero automatically goes through. Once again, sorry for not being clear. Get in quick, becuase only the first 10 votes will be counted.

I won't vote to give you guys the chance to get who you want in.

I have a question. When dealing with the Battlestar Gallactica crew, are we automatically assuming the current series? I've only seen the current one once, but I used to watch the original series all the time when I was a kid. I'm planning on voting assuming the old guys (Dirk Benedict, Richard Hatch, Boomer was a guy....) unless you want to specify that it's the new incarnation.

Unless specified, take it as whichever you want, for instance, Starbuck was voted in as Kara Thrace, and not the original, but Apollo could refer to either the original or the current, so I took it as being both.

MY VOTES

Dana Scully (X-Files) - Not really heroic, just doing a job
Fox Mulder (X-Files) - Same, only with added conspiracy nut
Harry Potter (Harry Potter) - Don't even get me started*
Marty Mcfly (Back to the Future) - Not much of a hero IMO
Sam Beckett (Quantum Leap) - Just trying to get home
Turanga Leela (Futurama) - Same as Scully

* the books are good, but Harry is only a hero by Zoe's definition "someone who gets other people killed" never takes responsibility, and only does things when its of some benefit to him, or if it settles one of his grudges, he's the annoying kid in school who gets all the attention and praise for being a wonder child when they don't deserve it... aka me :P

Round 1

Anakin Skywalker - A man who never did anything for any cause but his own gratification is no hero, nor even an antihero. He's not even properly tragic, because his fall results not from an inevitable flaw but from a series of transparently rotten descriptions.
Buck Rogers - Jumpsuits. I know it's shallow, but there it is. That and Gil Gerard's 'reinventing rock'n'roll' dance routine haunts me more than just about anything, bar the credits of the pilot movie.
Harry Potter - Like Anakin, there's a selfishness to Harry. It's more forgiveable because he's actually a modern teenagers instead of just acting like one, but I don't rate him as a great hero, although he might make the grade for book 7.
The Crew of the Battlestar Galactica - Good at their jobs does not heroes make. A number of the individual crew members will likely follow this nomination in short order, because BSG is simply not heroic science fiction.
Vincent - I know it was because the first actress left the series, but you don't get beast-props if your beauties are plural. Angel take note.
Yoda - Mentor, sage, bad mother(shutyourmouth). Not a hero, however, largely because he is always a mentor.

Round One:

Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) - I can't figure out what is remotely heroic about him, except perhaps his final act of throwing the Emperor overboard.
Arthur Dent (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) - uh, no; he's just blown about by circumstances and is pretty much along for the ride.
Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride) - I think Wesley was more the hero than Inigo; Inigo was there for the money and the vengance--more a supporting role than anything else.
Jayne Cobb (Firefly) - can a mercenary be a hero? Perhaps, but not Jayne I think.
Turanga Leela (Futurama) - a cartoon--right?
Kaylee Frye - a crewmember devoted to Mal and the Firefly; doesn't necessarily make her a hero.

Please allow me to make an impassioned plea on Vincent's (Beauty and the Beast) behalf. Here is a man, horribly disfigured, who is the protector of a small, vulnerable community. He must daily combat against his appearance and hide himself away. He protects his community and Catherine when she comes into his orbit. He must harness his strength and bestial attributes, yet he has a gentle soul that strives after beauty and good. A defender of the weak and helpless and a seeker of good (and right, and justice)--isn't that part of what makes a hero?

It's been a while since the show has been on and perhaps most people here haven't ever seen it. It's fantasy and not sci-fi and it's battles and intrigues are not those of your typical sci-fi show. Which makes the show all the more remarkable in the passionate fandom that supports it.

I'm aware that the show added a new leading lady in its third season when Linda Hamilton left, but I'm not remembering that Vincent ever returned her feelings. He remained devoted to Catherine's memory and committed to getting his son back from Gabriel. Diana aided him in that, but I don't believe there was a romance there.

Really, I don't think he deserves to be the first one voted out....:(

And I add my plea to warmbeachbrat's, seriously there are many less heroic people on the list. How did most of the cast of Firefly get on here? Yep, I love 'em but most of them are along for the ride following a hero, not heroes in themselves.

Well I can't fault you for the comments about those credits. I was a teen when the movie came out and my mom drove us to the movie. She was about to walk out when those credits rolled. She thought it was going to be an R rated movie. I'm glad they changed it for the tv series - loved those opening credits.

Based on past comments, Im guessing you've only watched the new series, and havent enjoyed the 9th and 10th Docs, I get the feeling that you are a 7th and 8th Doctor type of person, they are... well different doesnt even come close, but its as close a word as I can come up with. Just my 2p/cents

Ptah, how did you manage to end one tournament and start another on the same day? Amazing .......Just timing, had it not been for a tie break the other day then this would have gone from R0 to R1 without the 1 day gap, which would have been ideal.

How did most of the cast of Firefly get on here? Yep, I love 'em but most of them are along for the ride following a hero, not heroes in themselves.
Have to agree with that, Firefly is one of my favourite Sci-fi shows, but out of them all, I'd say only Mal and Zoe are heroes, Mal more than Zoe though, IMO

Nooo.....how does one hoose between one's favourite heroes from two of one's favourite books?

The "everyman" (or in Harry's case "everyboy") heroes (in fact may as well switch it to "everyperson" so as not to be gender/age biased although they are both male, they really represent the everyday person, amle or female), that are really just the ordinary us on adventures.....

eeny meeny.....delaying this with an overdrawn paragraph.....you can tell it's late here.....

Sorry, but the fact that Jayne is still in the running is absolute proof that every tourney we run ends up being a "it's my favorite show so I'm voting for it" tournament . I love the Jayne character too, but he's like 95% mercenary, with 5% potential for redemption.... If someone would like to do a side by side comparison of the Heroics of Harry Potter vs the Heroics of Jayne Cobb, it's a pretty easy choice. So what are we voting for anyway?

Perhaps someone could explain what an anti-hero is....

So what are we voting for anyway?

Interesting question actually ...

How would you define a good hero?

Is a good hero somebody who is perfect in every way, and never makes mistakes, and saves the world each day before breakfast
Or do you prefer your heroes more flawed and realistic?

Personally, for the first few rounds I'm voting for a combination of never heard of and don't like

Perhaps someone could explain what an anti-hero is....

Wiktionary defines an anti-hero as: "A central character in a story, film or play who lacks the conventional heroic qualities seen in the archetypical hero"

From Wikipedia: "In literature and film, an anti-hero has widely come to mean a fictional character who has some characteristics that are antithetical to those of the traditional hero. An anti-hero in today's books and films will perform acts generally deemed "heroic," but will do so with methods, manners, or intentions that may not be heroic"

I'm voting for more "personal heroes". Someone who influenced me in some way. Someone, or something to aspire to. Hence Kosh, who is definately going to be eliminated before half way, would be my top choice but someone no one else cares about. "Interludes and Examinations", for me, was one of the best eps of Babylon 5.

For me, it's not necessarily "Oh look, they killed the bad guy. Yay. Hero." but more... personal. I remember you said that you wanted O'Brien to go far... perhaps it's similar to that, i don't know. I can't remember if you stated your reasoning or not... :S

Wraith Scientist
September 24th, 2006, 08:40 AM
I've been thinking about my voting criteria, and it's probably something like:

Good heroes are characters for whom I cheer for, and who I hope succeed in their struggle, mission or whatever; characters for whom I would be saddened should they fail or die.

As well as a criteria for being a well written character, interesting, identifiable with etc.

It's kind of hard to put into words. It's been interesting to think about though

X-Men - I just don't think that we can consider a whole group to be a hero, especially now that all of the particularly heroic members of the team have been included individually. Certainly I don't rate the leftovers that highly.
Yoda

To my mind - and remembering that we're voting for SF/Fantasy heroes, rather than real-life heroes - a hero, or antihero, has to take at least one essentially selfless action to uphold what they believe to be right, and to shoulder responsibility for their own actions and the fates of others. It doesn't count if they're doing it for money or if they have no choice.

I wonder about some of my own nominations, and in some cases - not least the just-departed Arthur Dent - I think they showed up more heroically in the books than in the film/show.

And okay, I'm voting Buck Rogers off largely for the jumpsuits and the credits, but he was always a little too self-centred for my liking.

Hmm. I think I've just talked myself out of voting off Kosh for a while yet.

Rogue - definitely not a hero, more a sidekick/damsel-in-distress

Definitely so in the movie, but what about the cartoon? This is where it gets fiddly, since comic-book and cartoon Rogue have both risked their lives on a number of occasions, and rejected opportunities to lose her hated 'power' in order to be able to help others, while movie Rogue...just didn't have a great deal to do after the first film and was horribly shafted in the third.

Rogue - definitely not a hero, more a sidekick/damsel-in-distress

Oh no, no, no, no. Rogue a damsel in distress? Oh god NO!

However, if all you are going on is what you see in the current movies then I can see where you got that impression. In the movies she is still a kid and hasn't got her superpowers yet to do battle against the bad guys. Rogue is definitely one of the hero mutants, always ready to kick major *ss but unfortunately the movies definitely do not do justice to her character.

The comics - one must visit the comics if one is to judge the worthiness of the mutants as heroes. Can't tell I'm an X-Men fan can ya?

Meanwhile on with my votes :

Fox Mulder (X-Files)
Jayne Cobb (Firefly)
Lt. Felix Gaeta (Battlestar Galactica)
Marty Mcfly (Back to the Future)
O'Brien (Trek: DS-9)
Turanga Leela (Futurama)
