Avon was the Han Solo of Blake's 7, in that he was the amoral roguewho ended up being more popular than the idealistic hero. His truly heroic moments were few and far between, but I still rate him over a group.

Heroes can be boring. They are just always good and save the world on a regular basis and all that. I can also understand the appeal of a hero who has a few flaws or wrinkles (Kirk's womanizing and impulsiveness are pretty good examples). But what exactly is an anti-hero? And if an anti-hero has few heroic qualities, but is a central figure in a piece of art, isn't he/she just a protagonist at that point?

I think favorite protagonist / favorite character is an underlying feature or voting desire in the minds of many of us. I know I'm holding on to a few characters that are quiet heroes who are really just regular Joes doing their jobs. They are "heroes" to their friends and family because they are steady, hard working and have many other redeeming values.....

In literature and film, an anti-hero has widely come to mean a fictional character who has some characteristics that are antithetical to those of the traditional hero. An anti-hero in today's books and films will perform acts generally deemed "heroic," but will do so with methods, manners, or intentions that may not be heroic.


Theres a definate difference between anti-hero and protagonist, Jack Sparrow for instance, is a protagonist, but I wouldn't call him an anti-hero. Better examples are han Solo in the first Star Wars, he does the right thing, but only for personal gain.

Likewise the Tams aren't real heroes - River is just programed that way and Simon only did one heroic thing - rescue his sister for purely selfish reasons.

I have to disagree with you there, in "War Stories" he was tortured, and when he finally gets out, whats the first thing he does? He went back to rescue the captain when he could have (and after what he'd been through "should have") let real fighters like Zoe and Jayne go in. That, for me, shows that he's a hero at heart.

I'm sad Sam Beckett is probably going to go next round. I know he was stuck and the only way he could move on was to rectify whatever situation he found himself in, but I really like him as a hero. He doesn't have any super powers, he was always a nice guy, to my recollection he never killed anyone and rarely even physically fought with people. He solved most problems using words, logic, sympathy, caring, intelligence, and perseverence. Sure, he didn't get to do anything as big as saving the world, but he did save lots of little people's worlds. I don't remember him ever going against his own ideals. He was never selfish, even to the point of not doing what he really wanted to do and saving his Dad when he had the chance because Al told him that wasn't what he was there for. And the one time he did have a say in things and had a chance to escape, he gave it all up to save his best friend by stepping back into the machine and taking Al's place. And as much as I hated the last episode, he made a really big self-sacrifice by fixing Al's past to the point where Al wouldn't even know who Sam was anymore and leaving Sam completely on his own, without even one friend in the whole world. No one ever patted him on the back. He never got fame. He never got to celebrate his victories, he never got a rest or a chance to kick back a beer and talk with his friend. No one ever even knew he was there except really for Al and Sam even gave that up for the love of his friend.
He could have just said "I've had enough" and kept one of those people's lives as his own. I haven't seen the show in a long time, but I think there were a couple of women he had feelings for but he went ahead and did the right thing and ended up alone again.
I like non-violent heroes. The people who get absolutely nothing out of it except knowing that they're doing the right thing. Even people who are saving the world are saving themselves at the same time. (Where are they going to live if the world blows up?) Sam Beckett just really is the definition of the terms "good guy" and "hero" to me.

Commander William Adama - Fathererly, calm and relaxed military commander type, nicknamed 'The Old Man' by his crew, willing to take on extraordinary responsibilities and take extremely hard decisions to ensure the survival of the human race
John Crichton - Good guy, heroic man of principles, willing to sacrifice anything for what he believes is right
Malcolm Reynolds - Loyal, principled moral relativist, strong faith in humanity, strong belief that humanity should go it's own way and not be interfered with by governments. Probably the weakest of my choices
Starbuck (Kara Thrace) - When Apollo's viper was disabled in the miniseries, she crashed her Viper into his to wedge the two craft together and landed them both, at great risk to herself ("This is beyond insane" - Lee 'Apollo' Adama). Never gives up; has a half-crazy streak, and more depth than most. Good person at heart.
The Doctor - Time traveling hero, fixes problems, defeats bad guys, takes the moral high ground, uses intelligence and cunning rather than force.

The Doctor - Time traveling hero, fixes problems, defeats bad guys, takes the moral high ground, uses intelligence and cunning rather than force.

I mostly agree with your 'nomination' but I'll be voting for Angel instead of The Doctor. I like to watch Dr Who, but the campy-ness sometimes is overwhelming, makes me unable to take this show seriously, and personally I like the 9th doctor better, but storywise the 10th doctor have better ones :mckay:

The GW Gods can change your name for you, by permission and arrangement, but you're supposed to have a strong reason and it isn't generally encouraged. I believe a certain amount of grovelling is involved.

I kind of clicked reply to argue for Batman, but then it struck me that he basically has only the most minimal interest in life, which detracts somewhat from the heroism of his actions. He's still one of my favourite characters, but perhaps he'll find his way onto my vote sooner rather than later.

ETA: In case that sounded offensive, I just want to say I like British and French people. (Although I've never been to England...I'd love to! I had a lovely experience in France.) I don't think it was even the accent that puts me over. I'm someone who had no problem with Sean Connery playing a Russian sub commander. (Although Harrison Ford playing a Russian sub commander did seem a little silly to me.....I guess he just doesn't have the presence Sean Connery has.) Only about 5% of the population are as posh as most American TV would have you believe.


I don't doubt that. I know the same is true with American accents. Most people on American TV have what I would call "no accent" but I suppose it's sort of a TV accent if anything as I don't know anyone who talks that way in real life. I'm from the midwest and when I lived in New Jersey, they made fun of my accent (in a nice way, they weren't trying to be mean or anything) and now that I live in the Pacific Northwest, I still get occasional teasing. I had a friend from New Orleans who would absolutely cringe in disgust anytime an actor tried to do a New Orleans accent.
Anyway, sorry for the off-topicness.....

I don't doubt that. I know the same is true with American accents. Most people on American TV have what I would call "no accent" but I suppose it's sort of a TV accent if anything as I don't know anyone who talks that way in real life. I'm from the midwest and when I lived in New Jersey, they made fun of my accent (in a nice way, they weren't trying to be mean or anything) and now that I live in the Pacific Northwest, I still get occasional teasing. I had a friend from New Orleans who would absolutely cringe in disgust anytime an actor tried to do a New Orleans accent.
Anyway, sorry for the off-topicness.....


well actually the TV accent as you call it is actually how they talk in Toronto Canada -- they send anchors on the news there to learn how to talk -- lived in TO and they do have the cleanest or best "no" accent around -- now that i live in the land of the southern accent - i am tormented by my TO friends for my supposed drawl -- and then the southerners tease about my lack of drawl or TO?? accent -- so i am just a girl with an accent with no home!:S -- but couldn't pay me enough to ya'll even though i do love to listen to my southern gals chat on!!

Re Sean Connery's accent. Lets be honest, whatever he does he has that accent. Hunt For Red October: Russian? Untouchables: Irish? (seriously?) Last Crusade: Scottish was he? and someone i know mentioned he was a Spaniard in a film. He always sounded the same. Still, quality actor.

Is it England, Scotland and Wales? It doesn't include Ireland, right? So, would you say Patrick Stewart has an English accent then? (I know, there are more than one kind of English accent, but would his be one of them?) And Sean Connery has a Scottish accent, right? Is there any such thing as a Welsh accent? (Sorry for being so dim on this. My defense is that I'm from Indiana....if you've ever been there I think you'll accept that and take pity and educate me.)

Yeah, sorry. It's just that its my number one peeve. Bah, even my aunt who was born here still calls Great Britain - England. :( Britain is Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Re: Patrick Stewart's accent. Yes I would say he has a posh English accent, even though Picard is French. :S Sean Connery has a scottish accent, and there are different accents here in Scotland as well. Mine is different from, say, someone born in the north east of Scotland. We are a right mish mash of people here in Scotland and the rest of the UK. ;)

/edit: Oh, Wales does too, and they speak Welsh. And we speak mostly Scots, mixed in with English words (which is made up of other languages as well.) ;)

Adding my five cents (or should I say pennies, for all those English / Scottish / Irish / Welsh?), I can’t even begin to explain the number of accents that we have in Argentina… Almost every province (you should probably call them states) has a different accent.

And if you consider that every Latin American country has different accents as well, then the number of possibilities multiplies…. Usually on TV the translated movies are in a “neutral Spanish”, which is not the one we use in my city (I wonder if it is actually spoken IRL anywhere), but I’m so used to it that I find it hard to understand Spanish movies (I mean from Spain!), because the accent is SOOOO different….
