Why haven't they replaced the dialing computer with a DHD????

and don't start with the whole canceling of the show thing and etc...'cause they could of done it a long time ago..

if they would of had a DHD they would have been able to dial faster etc..and we wouldn't of had to hear walter say "chevron 1 locked"

i think it would of been way cooler..

Faster, yes, but they wouldn't have had nearly as much control or learned as much about the gate network software. We're also immune to viruses like Avenger and can dial intergalactically (which may require a special dialing crystal like Atlantis does otherwise).

there are also security issues. with a dhd, any tom, dick or harry could dial anywhere and we'd have no record where they went. whereas, with a computer, we can control that. we can lock people out, lock addresses out and have a record of who went where

the dhd may be faster, yet it's not as secure

the iris doesn't have to be locked to the DHD...
they could keep the computer and the DHD, i think it would be cooler that way...that way they would still be able to use the DHD and see who dial where etc...

As people have said, the dialing computer gives us increased control- locking out addresses, controlling the iris and so on.

It also has flaws which the DHD's don't which allow us to manipulate our gate to do new things.

Plus the computers record the addresses dialled- if it was a DHD, they'd still need a computer to keep track of who goes where.

But if they had a DHD to power the gate, the SGC would not so much money.

If anything they could design a NEW Computer based off the Atlantis computer system to dial the gate .... They would still have contorll of what gates they have been to and what gates where locked out , they would just need to add in a faster dailing device ...

They could take one from a Puddle jumper that doesnt work anymore and intergrade it to there computers ..

What?! Stuff that! If we had a DHD we wouldn't need Walter!

Listen, we had General Ryan come on and do a little cameo for us, and he's a real live four star, one of the big guys. And I had to ask him point blank, because there's a certain irreverence that I bring to the character, and denseness, but while we were doing this scene, I just looked at him and said, "Do you have guys like me in...?" and he stopped me and said, "Yes, and worse, and you're doing a fine job, son."

You'll notice that they have both a computer AND a DHD at the Alpha Site but they tend to use the computer because of the following reasons as well as ones other people have mentioned:

                        1. It has the database of gate addresses. No need to memorise them, you just select it from the list and go.
                        2. It keeps a record of all incoming and outgoing activity.
                        3. It can be shut off easily [as long as no-one locks you out as does happen sometimes]

Well with a DHD you have to type addresses with a computer you can just ctrl +c and ctrl + v

Besides, it's cool that we have our own dialing system.

It would be nice if they did some sort of hybridized system (like they apparently use at the Alpha Site).

Have a DHD connected for power, but remove whatever control crystals are necessary for dialing. Save the US taxpayer a little cash on the power it takes just to dial the damn thing, but keep all the security protocals we get from the computer.

I agree, that a hybrid setup would be helpful. It would also allow Earth to dial out faster too, as well as keep all the benefits stated above. For one thing, the Earth gate wouldn't spin anymore. DHD controlled gates don't need to spin, therefore don't. On the other hand, Walter wouldn't lose his job though. He'd still have to monitor power read outs, control the Iris, monitor transmissions, and other tasks as well. Anyways, the calling out of the chevrons is really not all that useful except as a dramatic way to tell the outgoing teams how much time they have until they have to embark. It really isn't anything more than countdown.
