Calgarian enters Stargate

Atlantis is calling for Calgarian David Winning. The filmmaker — who splits his time between Calgary, Vancouver and Los Angeles — directed the Aug. 16 episode of the new series, Stargate: Atlantis.
A spin-off of the long-running sci-fi series, Stargate SG-1, Atlantis features an almost entirely new cast. "It's like Stargate: The New Generation," Winning says with a chuckle.
The Aug. 16 episode — which airs at 7 p.m. on Movie Central — has the Stargate crew crash landing on a strange planet where the only inhabitants are children.
"It's a bit of a Lord of the Flies, Logan's Run sort of thing," explains Winning, who filmed the episode in Stargate's Burnaby, B.C., soundstage and on location in Langley, B.C.
"I'm very proud of it."
Though he has directed several episodes of such science fiction shows as Earth: Final Conflict and Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, starring Kevin Sorbo, as well as numerous feature films, Winning says it was difficult to get a directing gig on Stargate.
"Stargate is the Ivory Tower of productions in Vancouver," he says.
"And it's very cliquey. They tend to use people they really like from the first season. So, getting in on Stargate: Atlantis in the first season is great."
As for his feature work, Winning says he has a project on the back burner that he is "trying to pull to the front burner."
He is also hoping to become involved with the upcoming Into the West series — co-produced by Steven Spielberg — which will start filming around Calgary shortly.
"I hope to be in the (directors) group they're considering."
