Which is the greatest Sci-fi movie ever? Lets find out!

The Tournament will run as I normally run them, which for those who dont know, is as follows:

Stage One (Round Zero) Five Days of voting for your favourite Sci-fi Movies, any movie with 3 votes ges through to the next Stage. Everyone gets ten votes each, and those are for the five days. Once we have a list of around 30 movies we move onto:

Stage Two (Round One - Final Round)
We vote for the movies we like the least, knocking one out per day until we have a winner!

Have fun!

Just one tip, if you split your votes up over the days, ie.

Day One: - 3 votes
Day Two - 1 Vote
Day Three - 2 votes
Day Four - 2 Votes
Day Five - 2 Votes

Please quote your votes from previous days, it'll just make things easier when it comes to tallying of votes :)

8. Innerspace <---I love Dennis Quaid, and who says sci-fi can't be funny?
9. Enemy Mine <---I still love Dennis Quaid
10. ET <---ok, so this one's kind of hokey now, but at the time it was great!

Oh, and this one doesn't count because it's Sci-non-fi but I think the best one of all is :The Right Stuff. (If you haven't seen that, you must! If you haven't read it, the book's even better! [OK, so Dennis Quaid is in there, but that's not the only reason ;) ])

Honorable mention goes to Starman, Abyss, Clockwork Orange (which may or may not count as sci-fi....I'm not sure), Dr. Strangelove, Silent Running, and anything else with Dennis Quaid as an astronaut.

PTAH! is it possible to just "give free-passes" for all Star Trek/Star Wars/ Back to the Future/Terminator/Alien/Matrix movies ? they are sort of classic, and kinda like a given, although they are not necessarily the best.

Ptah, do the superhero films count as science fiction? If they do, or only some of them to, I'd like to vote for the following:

- V for Vendetta
- Superman (1978)
- X-Men II

If they count, or only some of them count, then great. If not then I guess I'll have another eight votes to throw around.

Man, I know I am forgetting some, and First Contact was great as well as the original 3 Star Wars. But I guess I will go with.

Aliens
I, Robot
The Fifth Element

I should go with Pitch Black or Chronicals of Riddick since they are good movies and probably wont get put on the list. At least most people I know liked both of these.

- V for Vendetta

- X-Men II

1. No (Shame, I love that movie), more an action movie
2. Yes, aliens
3. Yes, as it is based around a scientific development

White Knight

1. No (Shame, I love that movie), more an action movie
If that's your reasoning then I'm going to have to argue it. V for Vendetta, while it was marketed that way and while it does contain some awesome action scenes, isn't an action film. I can only remember three action scenes in the entire movie and I watched it yesterday. It's more of a political thriller than anything, but since it does take place in Earth's dystopian future it (only just) falls within the boundaries of science fiction.

The Signal
August 21st, 2006, 03:52 AM
Hmn, I can see the political thriller side yes, but I just don't see it as science fiction, however, as you want it in there, and have been a regular voter in my other tournements, and that it could be debated that it has some sci-fi elements to it, that may be enough to convince some that it falls within the right boundries, I will not say no to this one.

Also, if anyone wants to back up L-Jade's idea of a "Classic's free pass" for the following franchises:

Star Trek
Star Wars
Alien
Back To The Future
Terminator
Predator

Please let me know, should they get a "free pass" anyone who has used a vote to try and put one of them through will get that vote back.

LoneStar1836

I vote to give a free pass to the franchise movies. And throw the Matrix movies in there too, imo. Granted there are stinkers in those franchise groups, but it gives me something easy to vote for then in the early rounds. :D If more people were to come to the thread and read and comprehend the rules (ie. stop voting for movies already through. I'm thinking of rd 0 of the villain tourney going on now. ;)), then I'd say no. But I'm thinking we'll be stuck with a lot of the franchise movies and not a wider variety of others if people have to use their votes to get those through and then can't vote for other stand alone movies.

But then which franchise movies do you include and which ones you don't? Someone mentioned the Matrix. I can think of Superman (though in no way do I want III, IV, and Supergirl included :D), X-men, and umm well okay I can't think of any more atm. :D

I'm so happy someone else likes Spaceballs, I just saw the tourney and was worried I may be voting for it too late. And Ptah shame on you for not putting a link to it in the Villian tourney. Which Planet of the Apes are we listing. I want the original not the stupid remake. In fact I'd like all 5 of those movies. If Planet of the Apes listed is not the original then please add that as my 10 th choice.

So are all of you too young to know these great movies I've listed. I can't believe no ones mentioned half of my votes. And I realized they may be in vain but I'm going to have a lot of movies to vote out (Aliens, Terminators, half the Star Wars, Predators, etc)

So are all of you too young to know these great movies I've listed. I can't believe no ones mentioned half of my votes. And I realized they may be in vain but I'm going to have a lot of movies to vote out (Aliens, Terminators, half the Star Wars, Predators, etc)

Oh I like your list :) except for Mars Attacks - I just didn't cotton on to that one.

I haven't used all my votes yet because I had such a long list I decided to vote a couple each day to see what else everyone was voting in.

Here's just some of the ones I'm considering :
Dune, Enemy Mine, Marooned (1969), Rocketship X-M, This Island Earth, Metropolis, When Worlds Collide, Spaceballs, Fortress, Andromeda Strain, Westworld, Escape From New York, Planet of the Apes (original), The Time Machine (original), Earth Girls Are Easy

I'm sure I can find some more. Is it telling that most of my list is around or over 20 years old?? Come on people think pre Star Wars!! There are lotsa good ones made earlier than 1977 (I know, probably older than some of you) :D

I nominated The Time Machine (the original of course) so you would be vote #2 RealmOfX. *hint hint* ;)

I love Spaceballs, TS, but I wasn't sure if we were going to consider spoofs sci-fi but if Galaxy Quest is in then Spaceballs has to be. :D As far as Planet of the Apes is concerned, it better be the original were are talking about here.

ETA: Ptah, Spaceballs has 3 votes. Trek Girl nominated it. And frinky and Thunderstorm voted for it. :) Plus you need to take Superman off the list needing 2 votes since it gets a free pass.

1) Contact <--- you haven't posted it as already having votes, such a great movie!!! (And even better book!!!)
2) Solaris
3) Starman
4) Waterworld <--- I think I'm the first to vote for it!
5) Dune <--- Thanks RealmOfX for reminding me of this one! (Can it be considered a movie or a miniseries??? Should I vote for the whole franchise??)
6) Tron
7) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (supporting Trek Girl ;) )
8) Men in black <--- how come no one voted for it??
9) Men in black 2 <--- so the fist one won't feel lonely.... :P

I keep my 10º vote for tomorrow...

Ptah, I noticed that Star Wars VI - The return of the Jedi - is not on the list... *what are you doing forgetting such a classic sci-fi movie????* :D :P??

Ptah, I know this may be late but since we've got the Predator series as a pass (I guess I just don't get that) I think we should let the Planet of the Apes series have a pass. (Yes I can hear you screaming)

And if it doesn't get a series pass can I have some clarification as to which movie is in the list so I know whether I have another vote.

And since at this time I don't know if I have another vote, I realized no one voted for The Running Man. That was a great movie.

(Damn, I was hoping no one would notice Dune was missing)

OK, this has been bugging me coz I remember the story but can't remember the title/actor so I can't search it in IMDB, I want to put this as my last choive, so please help me if you remember the title.

There's this archeologist/scientist who ate a kind of plant in Amazon-ish country, the leaves could turn him into monster, he ship those leaves & some artifacts in a ship to his museum-lab in an American city, but when the ship arrive in the city, all the ship-crews were killed. His collagues put his artifacts in the museum, on the opening-night, the monster eat/kill the attendants one by one even the SWAT teams who arrive later. At the end his collagues realised that the monster is in fact himself (whose DNA has mutate).

Ring a bell ??

Big thanks to Missster.Freeman who gave me the title of the above. It's The Relic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120004/) , but based on IMDB it's horror/thriller and not sci-fi :( , I thought there's enough 'fake' science in it to make it sci-fi, it's afterall a B movie

Anyhoo... PTAH!, if you can accept that than THE RELIC is my 10th choice, otherwise it's THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN

*grumbles* I just realise there's so much more I want to nominate

xx. Tron

One more note: I think we still need one more vote for Fortress. Come on people, that was a suprising good movie. :)

Aww, how can you say that? It was good cheesy fun. :P I saw it at the cinema ten years ago and it was an absolute hoot. Lots of bugs and troopers getting squished in hilarious ways. :D I think it was better at the cinema, purely for the atmosphere, kinda loses it on the small screen.

Yeah, I'd start off with at least 10 votes if not 12. Celsius usually starts off with 12 in the SG ep tourneys since there are like 150 eps.

I'd also suggest that if there are ties in the early rounds, that you just toss both movies (or 3 if it's 3 way tie) and skip a tie breaker. But just for the early rounds...say the first 20 rds or so.

I looked thru the list and counted only 18 I haven't seen plus probably a couple Star Trek Movies. I've seen only 2 of the Next Gen movies (or later) I have no idea how many of those movies are next gen or later.

The sad part is of the movies listed that I have seen I only liked 45 so I'm not sure this is going to be a good tourney for me. Most of the movies that got free passes are on my not so good list. But we'll see how it goes. It's been fun so far. :)

I should know that.... but nobody specified and I had no idea (until just now when I looked it up) that there was a 1970's movie by the same name. Im going to assume people would be voting for the 2002 Clooney version.

Waterworld deals with the consequences of a scientific phenomenon: global warming removing land as a usable resource. Like it or loathe it as a film, it is definitely SF.
Sorry, i wasn't questioning whether it was SF or not... just questioning the film in general. It's not on of my favourites, shall we say.

As to L-Jade's comment:  Whatever floats your boat! (...Pun most definately intended :P :D)

2001: A Space Odyssey (The most boring movie EVER made)
Contact (that was it?! All that build up and that was it?!)
Event Horizon (oh look, someone made a science fiction movie, and a horror movie broke out)
Flash Gordon (the WORST movie! Bad acting, terrible dialog, stupid characters and who even remembers the plot)
Logan's run (words fail me)
Predator (haven't seen it--but it looks dumber than rocks)
Predator 2 (ditto)
Solaris (I didn't realize there was a newer version; I'm thinking of the really terrible 1972 version with Farrah Fawcett (!))
Spaceballs (not my type of humor)
Starship Troopers (violence in search of a sci-fi movie)

I don't care for Stanislaw Lem though, so I think I'll leave it on my list.

Yes; I often try not to think of that as well.

To each their own, although I'm not going to vote off anything I haven't seen until I've got shot of everything I know I hate. But then I went to see The Da Vinci Code so I could pass informed criticism; I guess I just have a certain committment to the world of bad movies.

OK, so I rented Innerspace and watched it last night. It's hilarious! To all of you who are voting for it, have you seen it? (It also has Robert Picardo and Henry Gibson in it and the music is by Jerry Goldsmith [Joel's daddy] so there's a little Stargate connection.) Maybe you'd have to have watched Martin Short when he was on SNL to think it's funny, I don't know. I don't expect it to rank near the top of this tourney, but it's way better than a lot of these movies!

Mad Max
Men In Black 2
Pitch Black
Superman 2
Superman 3
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
The Arrival
The Blob
Waterworld

7 votes for Flash Gordon? :( Another thing, i can understand votes for Terminator (kind of boring) and Terminator 3 (ridiculous!!!) but Terminator 2? That was classic. It was way ahead of it's time and the SFX still stand up (and better in some cases) to some SFX these days.

Round 2^5

7 votes for Flash Gordon?

It's sort of a spoof of the original. If it doesn't make sense to someone than it will get voted out. It's sort of campy like the TV Batman show.

Ming the Merciless: Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror.
