looks like there was a Terminator/Terminator 2 mixup, but I was going to kick out 2 this upcoming rond anyway, so I will get rid of Terminator and the 2 with the most votes.

I think I see where I went wrong last round, two of the Terminator votes were for “The Terminator”, and with the way I do the vote counts (copy to notepad to remove formatting, copy to Word, then put them in alphabetical order) they were in the wrong place.
With Terminator GONE

T2 is an absolute classic! It was made in '94 (if my memory serves me right) and everytime i watch it (which is many dozens of times) i find something else to love. The special effects are stunning, robert patrick was amazing as T-1000 and that little ginger punk gets whats coming to him. What more could you want? It was a movie so ahead of it's time. In fact, i'd kill to see it right now...

Yes.. James Cameron who directed Aliens as well seems to have a knack for making great sequels. And I agree this is a very good FX romp with a decent back story, but in some ways, it's just a much better arrangement of elements that were already in the orignal movie. Personally, I'd put in front of some of the movies still on the list (the incredibly boring close encounters) but behind many films already voted off (Aliens being a prime example). It's a great pop culture FX dominated Sci Fi movie, but not the best ...

People are seriously voting for Star Wars IV? It more or less paved the way for every sci-fi/fantasy picture since. I think it's held up pretty well. And while it's not the best on the list, it certainly should be in the top, uh (counts)...three? Yeah, top three....

Well, I've only been voting for T2 for about 40 or 50 rounds now so I think that says every thing about my opinion of this movie. Metal man was a terrible character IMO. One of the main reasons I dislike this movie. Although I would rate the Alien movies (all of them) worse.

Bladerunner - I just found really boring. I've tried to watch it many times and I've never made it to the end yet.

Nope. That's the rather poor Generations. This one had Christopher Plummer as a Klingon Commander and a Klingon / Federation peace initiative that goes bad. This was the swan song for the TOS crew.

I guage movies by how many times I'd watch it and if I'd buy it. I saw Bladerunner when it first came out and liked it a lot but never bought it. On the other hand, I not only have bought the Star Wars Trilogy but watch it, if not annually (usually our Thanksgiving movies) at least every other year. There in lies the difference. While not fair, if I didn't see a movie, because it didn't even look good in the adverts, that got put on my list first. Now we're down to the best of the movies. It's harder to make decisions. But if we want to play this game, we gotta vote off stuff we wouldn't otherwise think of as bad movies and feel guilty for having to vote them off...

When the original Star Wars movie came out, it was amazing, ground breaking and just tons of fun. It is still a solid, top 10 Sci Fi film. But FX have reached the point where we just know, the movie producers can do ANYTHING and the original impact of the film is kind of lost in history, clearly not for its fans, but for anyone just checking it out for the first time. Kahn has a more compelling and focused story. Serenity has a better story and better FX. And TESB is far more complex and more of a traditional Sci Fi epic. So I reluctantly must vote for its departure.... (ever seen the spoof, Hardware wars?..... You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll kiss 3 bucks goodbye! ..... (a bit dated, eh?)

I got your back. ;) I was part of the jello cartel in jonno's dessert thread during the great Jello War and we had the horse head market cornered. Though aintright was also part of the cartel but L-Jade wasn't, so good luck getting her hands on one. :P:D Plus I think they were all expended on the anti-jellos during the war. :D

well i was going to innocently ask http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/aintright/Other%20Smilies/whistling1.gif

Do your ears hang low?
Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them o'er your shoulder
like a continental soldier?
Do your ears hang low?

and say ohhhh!!! poor horsey!!!

Khan to go

Wrath of Khan is my favorite Trek movie and getting a rank of number three on any, open Sci Fi movie list is a huge accomplishment. Unlike many Trek films, Khan is actually about something which transcends its Trek roots: ( aging and facing death ). But judged by today's standards and removing the haze of Trek fandom, it's not a better film than Serenity or SW:TESB.

But for the fan, Wrath of Khan was the return of Trek:TOS in all its glory. It had all the humour, the inside jokes, the repartee of the troika, great space combat action and a real, consistent theme. I skipped it on first run because ST:TMP was such a huge disappointment. I caught it in one of those cheapo .99 movies and ended up going 5 nights in a row. Still a very good film and a GREAT Star Trek film.

On the other hand, I haven't seen Serenity, and NO movie that's been out only a couple years should be voted Greatest. They need to stand the test of time.

So I'm willing to be bribed persuaded for which movie should come in 2nd.

Uh, what do you require?

You're reasoning regarding Serenity is pretty close to mine. Yes, it did well at the box office, but I don't see it as a classic in any sense of the word. Sorry to Serenity fans....

Regarding Wrath of Khan--it's got everything. It's the best movie ever made from a TV series. It has a perfectly matched protagonist/antagonist. It has great literary references that mesh wonderfully with the plot. The special effects still stand up on repeated viewing and the acting was superb from all quarters. The themes and situations are something everyone can relate to. The plot, the dialog, the twists and turns...I could go on, but I fear I'm boring everybody. Oh! Kirstie Alley's Saavik and Ricardo Montalbahn's Khan. It can't get any better than that....

Sorry, WBB that was a nice response, but I decided to give Serenity the benefit of the doubt. I've seen some of the series and while it didn't grab me, I did like many of the characters. In Star Trek (at least the TOS version), I don't think there are any characters above blah or ok. And characters are usually the most important element for me.

Plus I'm still hoping for a tie and I think there might be a few more Serenity votes.

Serenity was my Number One for this list, it’s a new movie, just a year old, but that, to me, isn’t important. The acting on all parts was out of this world at times. The writing was nothing less than I would expect from Joss, perfect. Unlike Wrath of Khan, and in all the Trek movies and series, I could connect, you didn’t need to try with all your might to feel any connection to the characters and the story, and that in itself shows genius on behalf of everyone involved to me. I have always found the Trek verse and its characters unapproachable, and too “by the book” for my liking.

Final Round (Round 79)
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back to WIN
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to GO

There are no better Scifi movies, IMO, than Star Wars. Besides being classic, they combine all the things that make scifi what it is: an interesting story, technology that doesn't exist (yet?), great characters, intrigue, adventure, fights.... I should admit that A New Hope is my favourite, maybe because it's the first one, and it really impressed me when I saw it (which was on TV many years after its release).
But I can undestand why people here think that TESB is better, it's darker, more profound, could I say more adult? And it has one of the best Scifi lines ever: "LUKE, I'M YOUR FATHER!...(Hhhhhh)"

And as for other classic quotes:
- You don't know the power of the Dark Side.
- The Force is with you
- My ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is...

Princess Leia: I love you.
Han Solo: I know.

Enough advertising??? :P

*cries* Serenity was my pick to win as well. Despite coming out just last year, I think that this movie will stand the test of time. Like The Signal said, these are characters that the viewer creates a connection with without even trying, they're so well established/developed that it's almost impossible not to. I know the first time I saw it, I was floored by it's genius script, and that heartbreaking moment that cracked the story open and made it all worthwhile (you know the one, won't spoil for those who haven't seen it). Anyway, only movie I ever watched twice in one day, and since last January, I've seen it more times then any other movie. Ever. Even Star Wars. :P Breaks your heart, makes you laugh, cheer, and even feel a little sentimental- the perfect movie-viewing experience. :)

VADER: There is no escape. Don't make me destroy you. You do not yet
realize your importance. You have only begun to discover you power.
Join me and I will complete your training. With our combined strength,
we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy.

LUKE: I'll never join you!

VADER: If you only knew the power of the dark side. Obi-Wan never told
you what happened to your father.

LUKE: He told me enough! He told me you killed him.

VADER: No. I am your father.

Shocked, Luke looks at Vader in utter disbelief.

LUKE: No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!

VADER: Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

LUKE: Nooooo! No! No!

WRATH OF KHAN:

KIRK (desperate): Khan, Khan, you've got Genesis...

... but you don't have me! you

were going to kill me, Khan!

You're going to have to come down

here! You're going to have to

come down here!

KHAN: I've done far worse than kill you.

I've hurt you. And I wish to go on

hurting you. I shall leave you,

as you left me - as you left her. Marooned for

all eternity in the center of a dead

planet -Buried alive! Buried alive....

KIRK: Khan! Khan!

Agggghhhhhh! I still can't decide....:(

Final Round (Round 79)

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back to WIN

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to GO

I voted for Serenity last round because Khan is a classic but I would still rather watch Serenity over it anyday. I'm a so-so Trek fan...was a faithful viewer of TNG, DS9, and Voyager, but I'm no where as dedicated a fan as I am of say Stargate.

When it comes right down to it, I would watch both movies over and over. If I were channel surfing and either movie was on, I'd sit and watch it. But to choose....

*sigh* I guess my reasons for Wrath of Khan stated earlier still stand. Empire Strikes Back is a very rare movie--one with heart and soul, wrapped up with a stunning plot, moving dialog, universal appeal and a timelessness unlike so many other sci-fi movies. BUT, Wrath of Khan is also a rare movie that is both literate and entertaining; frightening yet with flashes of much good humor; where the thrust and parry of the two sides is exciting to watch and unpredictable to the last. Where hope is yet born out of defeat (in a different way than Empire). And a sequel can redeem a flawed first movie.

So, with a deeply conflicted heart, I must vote for Wrath of Khan to win and Empire Strikes Back to go (by an ever so slim margin).

Talk about your cliffhangers! That was 26 yrs and I still remember the shocked reaction in the theater.

sry callista but got to agree with lucreleia on this one -- have always loved these with a passion -- own every single SW ever -- am a huge, huge fan and though agreed Khan was excellent IMO nothing holds a candle to Darth, Luke, Yoda, Obi Wan, Hans, Leia and on and on so much to love ... wanted SW from the beginning!!!

tough but still a no brainer!!

teehee! :jack_new15:
I own them alll too, and I watch them quite frequently. I was young when the early episodes came out, but I still remember the classic quotes from Ep. V to this day! So....

OK, I feel the time is right for me to reveal to you my most funny of Star Wars jokes (don't forget to read the lines out loud in the appropriate character's voice):

Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker were dueling, lightsabers drawn and sparks flying. Vader pinned Luke against a bulkhead and glared into his face. "I know what you're getting for your birthday, Luke." he said. Luke fought himself free and jumped to a higher platform just out of Vader's reach. "How do you know what I'm getting for my birthday?" he asked. Vader shot Luke an icy glare and said: "I felt your presents."

I will be doing a short tournament soon, starting on Friday, “Greatest Christmas Songs Tournament”, which will be over in Off Topic, which should be fun.

Had lots of fun as usual. Even more so since my favorite won. (Hadn't quite decided if Empire or Planet of the Apes is my favorite but since Empire won, I'll go with that for the present)

And aintright - don't try to get at low as James Earl Jones voice, you could hurt yourself. :)

Yes the vocals are a little strained but was fun playing with my saber again *bzewww* oops! *crash* :jack_new_anime05: -- the neighbourhood kids don't want to play it with me anymore -- say they are getting too old *pshaw*
