Who here has got Sci-Fi Channel? (Need Help)

if I was to purchase a satellite for the purpose of picking up television stations in the USA, for example, Sci-Fi channel, would it be possible? I'm from Australia by the way, hence the question...

I think it would largely depend on the service provider for your satalite.

In the States, it's DirecTV and DISH Network primarily, but in AU I have no idea who the companies are.

The satellites that service the USA can not be picked up in Australia. That's a simple matter of geography as they are in geosynchronous orbit over the USA (well actually south of the USA). Unless there is a satellite provider that happens to carry the Sci-Fi channel in your general area you are flat out of luck.

For example here in Europe we have our own satellite operators (Sky digital being the biggest) but they don't carry the (US) Sci-Fi channel. And the US satellites can not be picked up anywhere in Europe (that I'm aware of).
