You would've thought that the Season 9 boxset would come out earlier in the US than Australia. (and Australia is still showing Season 9 on TV!)
Strange. ;)

With Fox taking over releasing the box sets it may be delayed by a month or so. Hoping for before xmas. Anyone heard more the Atlantis Season 1 Blu-Ray release? Has it been canceled? It was announced at the first of the year and haven't heard anymore about it.

Saw the announcement on this page: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/hdformats/highdefreleases.html#bluray

It's still listed as TBA. Although Stargate: Unrated is listed for Aug. 22 release on Blu-Ray.

Personally from what I've heard about blu-ray, bad quality, outrages price I'll stick to the HD-DVD format. Season 8 and 1 of SGA were formatted in HD and the re-release of SG-1 dvds are also in HD. As to the release date, havent a clue.

Remember Blu-Ray is also a high definition format so the picture quality will be pretty much identical whether its on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

Also, the re-released SG-1 sets state 'Mastered in High Definition' on the packaging but im afraid this is nothing more than fraudulent advertising because Seasons 1-7 were not filmed in HD so it is impossible for them to be mastered or released in anything more than standard DVD quality.

Where did you read about this date for the R1 release? because none of the top R1 dvd retailers even have it up for pre-order yet and if it was only afew weeks away they would infact already have stock.

Rottie
July 30th, 2006, 12:13 PM
That is correct,I mean it doesnt make sense that they can just change certain qualities.
It is either recorded in quality or it isn't,but I doubt that can actually be changed either way.:S
Sky one in the UK have gone to HD nwo days, and are trying their best to inforce people to go HD rather then our normal picture/sound quality.
Which means it will cost more for us to keep HD sky, which is unfair.

IndianaJones00
July 31st, 2006, 05:23 AM
Well actually if the first seven seasons were shot on 35mm film then it would be possible to master them in High Definition but without an HDTV and HD Player there would be no way to take advantage of the extra picture quality so you would be left with standard DVD resolution which can look good but will never be HD.

The reason why it is being held up is due to the fact that MGM is changing its home distribution company from Sony to Fox. The box set is apparently going to come out February 2007, before the last half of Season Ten airs in March.

are you dead serious february 2007 that is just plain sucks if that is true. I mean last year season 8 came out the day after my b-day which is oct.7th which means for the past 2 or 3 seasons it was a good b-day present but you mean i have to 8 more months just to get it if this little rumor is true? Same here, have been getting the Dutch releases of SG-1 since Season 7 as they are released months before the UK Boxsets and are half the price.

Last year my Season 8 Boxset was posted 2 days before release so hoping tomorrow morning I will get a dispatch email for Season 9 :)

IndianaJones00
August 7th, 2006, 12:35 PM
The UK Boxsets of SG-1 and Atlantis are due in those months but other countries should have them released long before then, infact the Dutch S9 Boxset is due Friday with the Australia set due next week.

To be honest though I dont see why there is so much talk about the US release of Season 9 being delayed, remember the Season 7 and 8 Boxsets were not released until October so that is most likely when the Season 9 Boxset will hit stores.

Why don't you guys just buy S9 from an australian retailer like www.ezydvd.com.au, it's under Au$10 for international postage, we maybe region 4 but surely region free dvd players are as common in The Us as they are in Australia.

I just checked the site it seems that the shipping charge is actually AU$20.00, still worth getting S9 2 months early.

The new volume just released in the UK is No. 7 in genre sales so far at amazon.co.uk (there is always a massive demand for the full season sets when they are released as well (February for S8, probably Feb 07 for S9)... Hopefully this will be reflected in US sales.

Just purchased the Australian Season 9 boxset set today and it is in the old 'fat' packaging. This, I suspect, will be a limited run before the new slimline sets hit the shelves. Those who want their previous sets to match may order the OZ versions and simply replace the discs when the R1 comes out.
A double purchase, I know, but at least your sets will match.

I am pretty sure it is only the US that is going slimline, the Australian and UK sets are still going to be 6 dvd cases inside a slipcase.
Also, remember the US sets are 5 discs where as the UK and Australia releases are 6 discs so the episode ordering wont match up plus you will have an extra case at the end.

what is a slim line bersion and a big version mean?
Slimline is packaging like the Atlantis Season 1 release which is 5 discs inside three slimline dvd cases where as the big version is the normal 5 dvd cases inside a cardboard box.

Stargate DVD's in Australia are being released in the new slimline version. The old packaging is being phased out like the U.S.
The new season 9 R4 set in the old packaging does match up with the Region 1 old package sets. I have a mixture of both and Australian Season 9 set matches up exactly the same as my R1 seasons 4-8 old style sets.

I might have mis-understood your first post but you said that people who want the bigger packaging for Season 9 so that it matches their other R1 sets should get both the Australian and US releases and just put the US discs in the Australian packaging, is this correct?

If so then that wont work, sure the R4 S9 set will look ok next to the others on a shelf but you wont be able to swap over the discs because the R1 release is 5 Discs while the R4 release is 6 Discs so the episode ordering on the packaging wont match the discs inside plus you will have a dvd case left over with nothing to put in it.

Glad it's coming out in Oct. (I'm in R1 also) :)

I wonder if R1 will be shafted again in terms of extras? I was really disappointed that ours didn't have the same extras that R2 had. And I can't buy the R2 sets because I can't play them. I'm sure I could get a multiregion player, but I can't play PAL on an NTSC system, so....

Well if the list of extra's on tvshowsondvd is accurate then R1 release will include all the extra's from the R2 releases.

I think it will also be the same for Atlantis Season 2. It seems more likely that the extra features will be near identical. It seems likely that we should get all 20 commentaries for episodes.

The fifth case of the R4 release has slots for 2 discs Eps 15-20.

Ah that might solve the problem but it is a little odd they didnt stick with 6 cases.

Well if the list of extra's on tvshowsondvd is accurate then R1 release will include all the extra's from the R2 releases.

Of interest, on the Region 4 set of season 9(presumabley a straight copy of the region 2 discs) I noticed no previously on Stargate intro for the second part of The Forth Horsemen. The ep timing is shorter than usual so it seems the recap is missing for some reason.

IndianaJones00
August 21st, 2006, 04:55 AM
They probaley decided it wasnt needed because you will have just finished watching Part 1 where as when it was originally aired several months would have gone by so a recap was needed to remind people of the events in Part 1.

What they should have done is made an option on the menu so you could watch both parts as a single feature length episode.

What's it like watching those episodes in DVD format?
I heard that in the "Lost City" commentary they said that
the episodes are better on DVD than on TV. Would
you find that to be the case?

No I live in the UK but the DVD releases are identical, except for the fact that the PAL release has more picture resolution compared to the US release.

Really? I thought the UK release always has more extra features.

IndianaJones00
October 1st, 2006, 03:07 AM
Seems this time the US is getting all the same extra features as everywhere else which makes a change but the UK Boxset isnt out until next year, I bought the much cheaper Dutch set.

As for the quality, I only have Sci-Fi d/l to compare them against but they are far superior, infact its like watching a totally different show as the detail and colours are so much more vibrant but this is no doubt due to the increased resolution and higher bitrate that DVD is mastered at.

God help us when they release the shows on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray as they will look mind blowing.

By the way here are afew pics of the quality of Season 9 episode 'Crusade', be warned they are about 1Mb each...

Did the Reg 1 last year have French titles in addition to the English ones? I can't remember. Guess I could wait and check when I get home. But I thought we got the same release as the US?

Is there a specific Cdn release this year, cause my slim line has every title in both english and french

I have a Netflix account and was hoping to rent S9 from them, but they don't have it listed on their website! (Normally they list products on the site long before they become available to rent.) They have seasons 1-8, so I see no reason why they shouldn't carry the latest season. Perhaps they just wait a few months before purchasing.

I looked on Amazon.com the other day and Season 9 was #6 on the top sellers. It's amazing what a cancellation can do. Go go DVD sales to rub it in their faces how dumb SciFi has been.

I was going to try Best Buy first. I ordered online for pickup in the early morning. I'm glad I did. I was looking around they were sold out. Let's just hope that someone out there realizes this means that Stargate still has more stories to tell and still has people there to watch them.

Got in last night. I have the Canadian version with the French audio track. It's the slim packaging wich is similar to my Atlantis S1 but different from my other SG-1 8 seasons.

It was 45.99$CAN, 6$ higher than amazon.ca 39.45$CAN but we where on the 5th and they haven't shipped yet and I couldn't wait anymore... Cancelled my order and bought this one in the store.

My advise is to forget about waiting for the £45 UK set which is coming out next Febuary and buy a R2 release from another country.

I got mine from the Netherlands and it was less than £30 delivered so 6 months before the UK release and £15 cheaper.
