I don't like any of the currently remaining villains much except the Cylons, and to a lesser extent the Operative and the Shadows

I like the Cylons because they bring up all sorts of philosophical questions, for example whether such machines are sentient, and because they're not your average black-and-white villain.
They can probably be done better justice by someone who's actually seen BSG

You've said it, must advocate the Cylons, and The Operative.

Why The Operative? That man was Dangerous. He devoutly believed in what he was doing, yet understood that he was evil, and he did it anyway. He had clear-cut motives, he wanted people to live in peace, so he took on a role of violence, ironic. And who doesn't love a villain in Space who fights with a sword?

Obviously no amount of advacating for him is gonna change anyone's mind. You either liked Farscape or you didn't (or haven't seen it). I loved it...one of my top 5 sci-fi shows...and he was one of the reasons it was so good. The Reavers should be gone by now, imo. Followed by the the Borg and the Terminator.... Scorpius has way more substance than those combined. The T-1000 was just badass. :cool:

How are you supposed to decide which one is better than the others if that is the only thing you are judging them by? I'm not saying that is how you are going about voting, but going by definition alone, how is someone supposed to decide if you don't judge them based on substance and depth of character?

What I’m getting at is that you have to find some way to weigh each villain against the others.

Going by the two definitions…

One. You could just stack them all up and decide which one is the most evil based on their actions. In that case Scorpius, would not be my top vote getter. It would be one of the more one dimensional characters like the Terminator, Reavers, T-1000, Borg, etc. They basically exist to kill or assimilate people. They don’t have much depth beyond that, imo.

I like all the characters that are left so I’ve got to have some way of ranking them. I like the characters where you can analyze their actions…they have reasons behind why they are “typically at odds with the hero” other than the fact that they are programmed to kill. (Obviously the T-1000 doesn’t merit that kind of analysis, but I just flat out thought he was cool cause he was practically unstoppable and the VFX for that movie at the time were awesome.)

I realized it's probably a little to late for Scorpius but how can you not like/hate a character that slowly drives the lead crazy and then when he's taken over his mind he makes him kill his love (and to have Crichton partially get back his mind only to realize what he's done).

Nope. Big plotline, major moment, but definitely not the end, and "it's not the destination, it's the trip" definitely applies. You have to see both Ben Browder and Wayne Pilgrim do their thing, it almost makes the plot secondary to the interplay. It was that good once it got going. You'll still enjoy it. :)

My criteria is pretty simple. The bad guy who makes me long for their demise and who makes me stand up and cheer when they get theirs is the best villain. If a villian is "understandable" in his motives and means, so that you have sympathy for them, they are not villians. They become interesting characters who are against the protagonist.

The very first scene with Magneto provokes so much sympathy that I can't think of him as a villian after that. Modern Sci-Fi does a lot of taking villians and making them understanable and nuanced, which makes them less like villians. They are merely antagonists.

My rant about Scorpie/Farscape in general
Thank gods Scorpie is gone! I find it hard to like Farscape, watching the DVD non-stop STILL makes me want to fast-forward more times than not. I can not imagine watching it on weekly basis. I stopped after early season 3, coz I just have to rent other DVDs which I'll enjoy more than just fulfilling a curiosity of a Sci-Fi show.
Once I get the basic of each characters, I enjoy the plot/idea, but the telling of the story is convoluted with too many unnecessary scenes (or whatever technical terms they call it), basically, IMO, they need a better film-editor. Preferably someone who used to work for Wheddon :P

I feel pretty silly being so upset about a tourney on a forum, but I am. Star Trek--the original--began a lifelong passion for sci-fi when I was a little girl. After the stunning loss of the series and then the crushing disappointment of the first movie, the second movie was a joy to behold and an experience seldom matched. I've never been a huge Captain Kirk fan, but the battle between Kirk's heroic, but flawed character and Khan's obsessed, but tragic villian was a remarkable one, unequaled, in my opinion by any other movie conflict. Eighth--eighth! He deserved better....

Kahn was one of the best antagonists in all of science fiction, but his wrath was at least understandable. For pure evil, I find the Shadows more compelling and The Operative more unique. For those who have not seen Babylon 5 (seasons 2-4) and Serenity, you don't know what you're missing.

Unlike the Trek fans, the Brown shirts have lots of favs left, so I suggest we get rid of at least ONE of them........
