What are these?

I came across these and would like to know how a series that ran from 63-89 can fit on 5 discs or is this the first set? And what’s up with the cartoon?

They are talking about season one of the new series. You can tell by the quote, "It's Doctor Who: The Complete First Series (BBC Video, 13 episodes, five discs, $99.98), the most recent revival of the long-running British adventure series." (Italics mine)

The toon they are talking about is 'The Invasion'. It was decided to animate the missing episode to that story and sync it with the existing soundtrack and release it on DVD. There is a 30 second clip of it on the BBC website. Looks promising to me....

There are two missing episode from the story 'The Invasion' (it's a four part story.) The story is considered a classic. The BBC is experimenting with the animation to see if it will, 1) sell 2) be a good enough quality that they can do the same to other stories.

There are a ton of missing episodes from The First Doctor, the Second Doctor and some of the episodes of third Doctor are missing as well (however, all the third Doctor's episodes exist in a Black and White format. Some people, including myself, prefer the B&W to them in color as it adds a little mystery to it)

It features the second Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe.
The video for parts 1 & 4 are missing and have been replaced by animated versions.

No, the first 13 episodes of the original series (Season 1, 1963-1964) was released on DVD in its original form as a boxset called Doctor Who - The Beginning Collection. Click here.

Those 13 episodes comprise 3 story arcs.

This is not to be confused with Doctor Who - The Complete First Series, which is a boxset containing all 13 episodes of the new series from 2005. Click here.

No. So far, 38 full stories (which are typically between 4 & 6 episodes) have been released in Region 1 (the U.S. and Canada).
