BOBW have just announced that Joe Flanigan will be at the Sydney con in February.
      http://www.bobw.com.au

Having been to several of Adele's conventions, I have to say it's a real treat to have such direct and ongoing interaction with fans. I don't think you can get anywhere near this proximity and interaction at a con anywhere else in the world. By the end of the weekend you feel very much like part of an extended family rather than a bunch of fans and guests. So, if anyone is thinking of coming downunder, this could be the time.

          By Russell Baillie

When he rings for his interview, it's tempting to address Robert Patrick as
"sir". After all, the honorific comes with most of his roles these days. That's
whether it's the various colonels he's playing in between being cast as 1950s
          rock'n'roll patriarchs.
In the past year he has played the father of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line and
the father of the King in telemovie Elvis. The connection continues - in the
upcoming Lonely Street he plays Presley as a 72-year-old man.

GW: Tell us about working on "A Dog's Breakfast." How enjoyable an experience
                  was that?

KH: That was completely different from Stargate but also a great experience.
That was hilarious, because David told me -- I don't know if he didn't want me
to have high expectations or something -- but he told me we were going to
shoot it in his house with a video camera. No budget. And it was going to be Me
and Mars and Paul McGillion. And I got there, and it was this insane, huge
thing with all these amazing people working for free, and locations, and trailers.
                  It was amazing.

And again, the script was phenomenal. David's really funny. He was not only
acting in it, but directing. And he wrote it, and all that. It was very
different from Atlantis because we weren't just working together as actors. But it
was wonderful. A really fun character. He also wrote that part with me in mind.
I think she was more of a stretch for me than Jeannie.

Pop culture has long had its Rip Taylors and Wayne Newtons, showbiz personalities who book their biggest gigs on the basis of kitsch rather than any genuine value as an entertainer (although Newton is a fine singer, just as Shatner is a tremendously watchable actor). But now stars of yore are coming out of the woodwork to spoof themselves and their most famous roles—Lee Majors or David Carradine in TV spots, anyone? The result is that a bevy of older actors have lodged themselves in the semiconsciousness of the average twentysomething. But of all the stars who could ride the ironic fast track out of Hasbeenville, Richard Dean Anderson, Lou Ferrigno, and Steven Seagal stand the best chance at breaking through to Mr. T-style superstardom.

Richard Dean Anderson laid the groundwork for his candidacy in the 1980s, when he began starring on television's MacGyver. The show was a far-fetched, hourlong drama about a crime-busting operative who uses everyday sundries instead of carrying complex gadgetry (talk about a premise that would lap itself within the first season). MacGyver ended as a series in 1992 but lived on for years as the butt of a joke in The Simpsons, where spinster characters Patty and Selma consider the show to be the highlight of their mutual existence. Earlier this year, Anderson voiced a Simpsons guest appearance as himself (proving he's a good sport—a key prerequisite for ironic superstardom) and appeared in a MasterCard commercial as MacGyver, defeating a compound full of villains with some tube socks and a turkey baster. Further, MacGyver made the pop-culture rounds in The Family Guy (sans Anderson) and in homemade spoofs <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdjR2kQvpbg>.

As a thespian, Anderson has none of the hamminess or other qualities for self-parody that a Shatner or Mr. T embody, so his only shot at ironic superstardom is to stay in character as MacGyver. Perhaps the only reason the character isn't more exposed pertains to Anderson's continued relevance (if the Sci-Fi Channel can be called that) through TV's Stargate SG-1. Still, it's easy to imagine the actor hosting a reality show in which contestants jury-rig devices with found objects. Better yet, Anderson could reinvent MacGyver as a big-screen hero in a campy fourth Saw film, escaping the franchise's trademark torture traps with his trademark ingenuity.

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

                                8 Years. 8 Films. 8 Days.

We're getting down to the nitty gritty of Canada's Number One Short
                                Film Event!

Excitement is in the air. The really hard work is starting. The teams
won't admit it, but some panic is setting in. We're only one short
week away from the official kick off of the 8th anniversary of the
Crazy8s, and the build up keeps on building up. This week's CrazE is
jam-packed with special goodness. We have big news this week in the
form of a HUGE announcement as well as the usual team updates, some
nice hardware won by an alumni team, and media hits like you wouldn't
believe. So, let's try to keep up as the Crazy train keeps chugging
along (but it's not going off the rails).

Right, about that HUGE NEWS! Set your alarms, fellow CrazEs, for the
morning of Thursday May the 25th. Not only is it the official kick-
off of the 8 days of madness, but we've managed to finagle an
appearance on Citytv's Breakfast Television (that's lucky channel 13
for those outside "the loop") to hand out the start packages to each
of our teams! The packages include $800 Canadian (not so dodgy
anymore!) in cold hard cash, their 30 minutes of tape stock along
with tapes for delivery, a list of the many wonderful sponsors and
suppliers who will be assisting, and of course, the oh so exciting
insurance forms! The teams will be interviewed by Tasha Chui, and
then BT will check in with everyone throughout the morning to see
what they've got planned, how they're starting, and how they're going
to cope with the impeding deadline and the stress...the terrible,
terrible stress. Should be loads of fun! So that's right, set those
alarms to buzz - we'll be on starting at 7AM - to catch all the
action live. Think of it as just another call time - me, I haven't
been up that early since my days as a wee lad going to early morning
hockey practices. Exciting stuff! And no snoozing people!

                                **snippage**

Breakdown, the set-in Vancouver earthquake story by Director John
Bolton and Producer Errin Clutton has secured a hefty chunk of their
principal cast. They've added Christopher Shyer (Whistler), Amanda
Tapping (Stargate SG-1), Carly McKillip (Alice, I Think), Sonya
Salomaa (The Collecter), Garry Chalk (Stargate SG-1), William S.
Taylor (Man In The Mirror) and Kendall Cross (Stargate SG-1). Whew.
The team is also putting the finishing touches on a classical music
video and a Bravo!FACT short before they get started next Thursday.
                                Told you they were crazy!

PARTY! It ain't all just hard work and early call times, people. We
like to party like it's 1983 (while simultaneously wondering what it
would be like to party in 1999) as well. Tickets for our gala
screening and after-party schmoozefest Saturday June 3rd at The
Centre for Performing Arts are going fast. Have you been to The
Centre? Designed by acclaimed Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, it has
become the go-to entertainment facility in the city. Our screening
will take place in a 1,821 seat three level auditorium with lush (and
ultra-comfortable) purple velvet seats, uncompromising sightlines and
impeccable acoustics. Schmoozefest in the awe-inspiring foyers and
the grand marble lobby. Be sure to check out the arched ceilings!
Washroom facilities on all four levels - keeping lineups to a
minimum. And the best part? Full bar. On. All. Four. Levels. Need I
say more? Dust off your tuxes, pull that dress out of storage and
snap up your tickets before it's too late and you're left standing
outside with the hot dog vendors.

*Don't forget our bonus ninth film as well - the one that will set
the tone for the evening. Written and directed by Crazy8s alum
                                ("Unwritten..." 2005) and award-winning comic-book artist Kaare
                                Andrews!

                                Seguir siendo loco Vancouver!

This information about "Breakdown" is from IMDB:

                                http://imdb.com/title/tt0819872/plotsummary

In May 2006, filmmakers John Bolton and Errin Clutton were given
eight days and eight hundred dollars to produce the made-for-
television disaster film "Breakdown". Unfortunately, they spent the
first seven days in casting. On the eighth day, they cut
together "Breakdown" with the only footage they had - the video from
the casting session. This is that film.

                                "Breakdown" is formatted in QuickTime.

I downloaded the movie, but as I'm still using a dinosaur coal-
powered computer (gasp, Windows 98SE), and the QuickTime is formatted
for the new version 7 (for Windows 2000/XP), I can't open the file.
                                (It's 1,474KB in size.)

                                Sigh.

In any case, here's the direct link to download the movie (perhaps
                                someone else can view it):
