Making little advocacy speeches is going to be more difficult with music than it was for the show themselves, but let's give it a try. Might be fun.....

Most of the themes that work reflect the content of the shows they represent. A funky SciFi show should have a funky theme (fits a lot of the shows left on the list). A show that embraces the vastness and beauty of space should have a theme that inspires and has a sense of wonder (Voyager). A show that embraces the spirit of being a rebel and getting by on the rim (Firefly) should have a counter-culture rootsy theme.

And they do.

Some of the other good themes are just catchy and stick with you. The bad themes are just bad musically or feel disassociated with their shows. A lot of them are gone already.

Space Above & Beyond is great, it's one of those pieces that sooo fit the show.I think that's one of the problems I'm having on a few of these.....I never saw even one episode of this show. Or Thunderbirds for that matter.

IMO, a good theme should not only be appealing musically but also introduce and enhance the mood and feel of the show.

But for Space Above & Beyond I'm rating strictly on 1) personal musical tastes and 2) if it sounds like a catchy and intriguing theme for any scifi show. And I have to say it sounds a little dated by those standards. But then so does ST:TOS and I've still been keeping it around because I thought it was a pretty cool theme when I first watched the show as a kid. So there you go. Not very scientific, sadly.

Luckily I've seen at least a few episodes of most of the remaining shows so that helps a lot. :)

IMO, a good theme should not only be appealing musically but also introduce and enhance the mood and feel of the show.
The Thunderbirds theme has all those qualities, and it even sounds good when listened to on its own. I still find myself humming along to the tune. :D Space: Above and Beyond is a good theme, but it doesn't work for me without watching the opening credits.

I'm voting more like this. ^
If I don't know the show, I have to decide - do I like the music, and I think my musical tastes probably don't mesh with this group of posters as I seem to be the only one voting for most of the eps on my list. Tru Calling theme was fine until the singing started and then after 10 seconds I had to hit the mute button so it's at the bottom of my list.

But I also think that the visual can help alot too. And with just the music, those of us that have never seen the show lose something in the translation.

I loved the Quantum Leap theme. Thought the music was great and it had a good opening sequence too.

I won't comment on the first bit, It'll just end badly, but to be fair, you are assosiating it with death, when Angel (the show) and the theme is all about living and using your life to the full in order to do something good. As for the music itself, well every part of it really contributes to apart of Angel's personality and the feel of the show, the love of the fight, the underlying evil of Angelus, each instrument is a part of him, and more importantly, part of what the show is all about. I want it to be in at least the top 3 minimum (want it to win, but you cant have everything) for two reasons.

1. IMO, its a fantastic piece of music
2. It pretty much sums up all the emotion and development of 5 seasons of the series in a short amount of time, no other theme can really boast that, other than Firefly, and so is perfect for the show. IMO :D

Haven't seen the show, so all I can do is react to it as music. Of course, I'm gritting my teeth as folks vote off B5 season 3 who haven't seen the show. That theme (to me of course) communicates the whole story arc and I love it, but it's not all that musical.

So under the criteria of summing up the show, you have one factor and the music itself is the second. Very few themes are great musically AND really say something about the show......

I know when we get down to the final 6 or so, I'm going to advocate strong, but it's music, which is soooo subjective.....

Both great music, but their reliance on the voiceovers taints how the music conveys the feel, and they both do it better than Who and Buffy IMO, as the BtVS' music was more appropriate for Seasons 1-3, and then 6 and 7 to a lesser extent, as for 4 and 5, totally wrong feel.

I really can't believe anyone would find the Voyager music boring, but I'm an older person who appreciates music that has majesty to it. It is the only music I gave a 9 to. It starts slowly and has a sense of exploration and wonder which fits the theme of the show perfectly. The music rises and falls and has a very strong melodic line. DS9, by comparison just sits there in the same range and rotates, just like a space station.

I rated all the music on a 1 to 9 scale. I have 7 "8"s including the UK version of BSG, Doctor Who 9th/10th, Red Dwarf (which I have never seen), Trek TNG, Firefly, Highlander (which I have never seen) and Babylon 5 (3).

Angel got a 6, along with Trek TOS and a number of others.

PTAH! so agree with you on ANGEL. I didn't know who Angel was before I saw the pilot CITY OF, but the first time I heard the song, I thought, this is such a lonely tunes, like he always have to fight to live his lonely life. I was not too far off.
I personally like the theme song which is simple, kinda like X-Files and if it's with lyrics, I like the way Firefly/Roswell theme explained the series.
The Startreks tunes are always grand-ly with full orchestra and everything, if they're sounded good, there's no surprise there. That's why I tend to vote them off :rolleyes:

P.S. : Ever since I watch the new season of 4400/Deadzone, I keep smacking my head for not put them in the list. The 4400 tune is VERY GOOD in explaining the abduction.

I absolutely agree. Voyager is one of the only themes listed that i can call to mind and hum anytime. I don't ever need a reminder of what it sounds like. I think it's the best Trek theme and one of the best overall themes. It's elegant and melodic, classical without being blah.

*sorry, I've missed a ton of rounds (warning: liquids and laptops don't play well together) so hope it's okay to jump back on in the tiebreaker round. Really interesting to see what's left in the tournament. Most of my favorites are still around (Angel, BSG, DS9) so ya'll done good. :) Although I'm sorry to see B5 or BSG will go this round :(
