Wow! I'm really excited about this...but I can't watch it!

I have the latest version of windows media player and I've tried it in both internet explorer and Mozilla firefox...but it won't play.

Is it working for anyone else??

Make sure you have the WMP version 9 update from Microsoft.com. (My browser automatically prompted me to download the new codecs, which was fast and hands-free.)

I think it's working for most folks, since none of them are here right now :) lol

You guys are KILLING me with this stuff! I'm trapped with dial up until I get to work tomorrow...... *anguished howl!*

*kiwigater contemplates if 12.30am is too early to get to work for Mon am...*

I am SO looking forward to watching this, Thanks David (I assume you are responsible for the video???). :D :D :D

Two words, David: Teryl Rothery?! LOL!

Great stuff. If it wasn't so incredibly far past my bedtime, I'd comment more.

Oh and ha! One teensy appearance by me and that's it. I'm virtually unscathed! :P

I do have WMP version 9...I downloaded it via the link on that page. But it still won't work.

All I get to see is the 'Gateworld: www.gateworld.net' on the blue background on the screen and the video will not progress past that.

As I said I've tried it in two separate browsers so I'm not sure what the problem could be :o

not working for me either..

it tries to download and it says unable to open this file, please varify filename and path and try again.

it could also be that im on a mac - they're the scourge of the universe... very very evil. possibly more evil than say..... I don't know - Stargate Infinity? :p

I'm not sure what the problem could be :o

Sounds to me like you're not giving it enough time to load. If I pushed PLAY after thirty seconds of download time nothing would come up on my end either - that's because the data takes time. Give it ten or so minutes and then push play. Even on my 26.6k connection, after 10 mins I can get 5 mins into the documentary.

Hmm I have broadband and I've given it far longer than ten mins to load *something*.

But I'll try this method again...I'll give it 30 mins and then see what I can see.;)

Do keep in mind that this is a very big file (30 MB), so if you are on dial-up it will take some time to download.

But the good news is that if you are seeing the animated blue GateWorld logo on the screen, you ARE successfully seeing the video stream (so you don't have WMP plug-in problems).

We hope it's worth the wait. David really out-did himself on this one.

Is that all it is supposed to do?

If I can't get it working today, I'll try the uni computers tomorrow.

Edited to add: I might try downloading the plug ins separately, even tho I have version 9.

Hi guys,

bspargo
August 2nd, 2004, 01:45 AM
Daisy, you need to "Right click" the link, and click "save target as" (select a location to save the video) in order for it to work. I also get a repeating logo when i simply click the link. So downloading the video will work for everyone.

I actually registered for the forum to post. Also, bspargo, thanks for posting the workaround (4:45am). It took a couple tries but it finally did kick in! And now, MUST ZZZ, lol!

I have cable and the file started playing almost as soon as I loaded the page. No worries, there.

It was worth the loss of an hour of sleep to watch it. Very cool stuff. And thanks EVER so much for getting at least part of Corin's poem in there. It's probably the most he was allowed to say all weekend. :(

That's an amazing little camera you have. The sound was a little difficult to hear at times, but the whole thing was still most excellent, all things considered.

Still love the "Teryl Rothery" bit. And the new Jaffa joke. hehe.

Sounds like the plant made an impression on Colin, too...

I'm having the same problem as everyone else.

How are you guys downloading the file itself? I can't see a link anywhere that I can 'save target as'. There is just the mini windows media screen with the play, pause buttons etc.

No link to download.... :(

And I feel like I've tried everything else to be able to view it...

Skydiver
August 2nd, 2004, 04:40 AM
to save to your harddrive, right click on the link above, then you should see 'save target as'

it'll download and you can watch it from your harddrive what i'd personally recommend

SaharaGate

I managed to download it but it still doesn't work. But I've figured it out(or rather a friend did)...I need to delete my cache and then (all things going well) it should work.

I also didn't have any problems watching the video - neither at home nor at work...and it was SO MUCH FUN watching it - it did its share to make me a little happier...I didn't have the money or the time to come to GateCon, and I'm deadly afraid of flying anyway, so the chance of attending is probably nil...instead I got to enjoy the vid!

Just one question: What video camera was that? I'm making vids myself and am quite interested in other people's experiences....

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am almost speechless. ;)

I almost wished I haven't watched it. It will take a minor miracle or a lottery win, before I could afford to go to another GATECON. I thought I was ok with that but now you have got me thinking about how to swing it again for next year. If I can't go, it is good to know that you will be there providing those of us who can't be there with a amazing video account of it. :)

It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and worth every cent I "charge". :D

Love that CJ Jaffa joke. I read the full account of it on a another forum. He told it at his panel at Toronto Trek. It was quite funny but I am glad he never told it at the GATECON panel.

Hi all! Just wanted to say THANKS to everyone who made the online Gatecon Backstage Pass video available. Well done! Lots of fun. :)

Also... just a note (for those having problems playing the vid): the video plays fine here - I have a cable internet connection, Windows XP (with all critical updates) and Windows Media Player (has a 2004 copyright). I think SPOILER SPACE is warranted for those who hasn't seen it yet. Trust me, you will want to see this stuff before reading the comments about it!! :D

David, this "report" (I put it in quote marks because it feels way too extensive to be labeled simply as a "report) was nothing short of excellent!! The noise made it difficult to hear what was said at times, but the rest of the actual content much more than made up for it.

Loved the introduction scene with, uh, "Teryl Rothery". Funny stuff, and the acting wasn't bad either. And I really appreciate the interview bits. As for CJ's Jaffa joke... Well, I'd heard it before so I knew the punchline. Otherwise, I would probably forever have been wondering what it was. The "censorship" was obviously warranted, though, given GW's "family friendly" profile. :D

I'm not about to play movie critic or anything, but I hope you won't mind me rating the documentary the only way I know how:

Finally had a chance to watch this tonight. Great job David! This may be the closest I'll ever get to a con and it was great to see all the bits I've heard reports on. The puff and ruffle and CJ's X-rated Jaffa joke and all the other actors like Don and Teryl and Colin and J.R. and Gary Jones and the guy who played Rothman and on and on. I LOVED it! Amanda and CJ and MS are just so cute together, it's easy to believe they're all good friends.

And it's like a real production and everything. Credits and music (loved the "Children of Dune" theme) and you are just the cutest thing with the whole Teryl Rothery bit. LOL....

The only problem I had, technically, with the video was that I was watching it and half way through, my screensaver went on.. and made the video stop lol.

I got frustrated and decided to just download it off the site to watch at my leisure. That might be the best way to do it for some of the people having problems opening it in WMP. That way you can open it in winamp or something similar ;D

OK sorry to be a bother but I also can't seem to get the video to play.

I've downloaded the most recent version of media player...so I don't think that's the problem.....

I right clicked and did the "save as target" and it (the computer) said it did it in like one second (which doesn't make since to me cause I'm on dial up but anyways it tells me it downloaded 30K in that time...

But when I try and watch all I'm getting is the title page I guess you'd call it.....am I just be inpatient, or did I do something wrong....like I said I'm on dial up (we don't even have DSL where I live) so should I just bring it up and leave the room for a while and wait?

Thanks.

So it saved the whole thing?

How big is the file on your computer? Should be around 30/40 mb I think (I have it at home, not at work). If it's under that, then it didn't save all the way. 1 to 2 seconds of video would be <500kb..

Thanks!!

Although I've been lucky enough to attend all five Gatecons I always enjoy seeing things from another person's perspective and that is what you allowed so many of us to do. This little video clip was great because it gives others a chance to see things that the normally do not see and it just kind of awakes the feeling of excitement from the convention all over again.

So thanks for sharing with us what you saw and did and I hope that we can all see each other next year.

Nope. Luke wasn't at the con, but David sure did try and get him there. *sigh* The poor guy is probably scared to death to think that there's some freakish cult centering on some nothing extra he played years ago and doesn't even remember. ;)

Southern Illinois. 3 hrs to St. Louis, 4 to chicago, counting our delay and overlay, 6 to Vancouver, counting our delay. By that time it had been almost 13.

David, where were you flying in from that it took 13 hours to get to Vancouver?

23 hours?? Sheesh!

It takes 1 hr 40 minutes to get to seattle from here, so I'm assuming my future flight (for next year hehe) would be about 2 hours :)

I could *drive* 23 hours.. going slow :)

I had an hour delay in Toronto which made me miss the last bus home in Boston, so I ended up spending the night and taking the bus first thing in the AM. *sigh* As if travel weren't stressful enough, especially after a big fun-filled weekend...

Have you tried right-clicking on the link, selecting "Save Traget As.." or "Save Link As..." or whatever, then when the file dialog box comes up, asking you where to save it, change the name of the file. Just make sure it still says ".wmv" at the end.

Brandie
August 4th, 2004, 11:35 AM
Yes people, please don't just click on the link. It's a direct link to the file, so if you click on it normally, it will try to OPEN it. You need to save it to your desktop, so that it downloads to your computer and you can view it at your leisure.

VirtualCLD
August 4th, 2004, 11:40 AM
But at the same time, try renaming the file to anything you want, just make sure you keep the ".wmv" extension on the end.

This worked for me when the file wouldn't download with the name as is. I renamed it and it worked fine.

My friend might kill me for doing this but I've been PM'ing this link to people:

He is hosting the movie for me and said that I could have a few people download it.
While I know you did this as a favor to other fans, Brandie, you might want to check with Darren and David about that. On the Gateworld page which includes the vid itself it says:

"This video is copyright © GateWorld.net, and may not be reproduced or republished in any format without express written consent. All rights reserved."

David- any chance of maybe breaking the file down into smaller, easier to digest chunks? I mean, I had no problem with it, but the poor bast- er, people on dial-up are still gonna be stuck gnashing their teeth waiting for the download. Give 'em something to enjoy while they're waiting for the rest of it to finish... and give them reason to keep downloading the thing. ;)

But wanted to say the video was GREAT! Loved it, sent all my non-stargate friends (actually... thats all my friends!) there to check out this 'crazy convention-thingie' I went to. And it was so fun to see some of the 'behind the scenes' stuff that us regular convention goes miss.

It means they're working on creating a separate download link for the vid, instead of just having it automatically load when you open the page. Or maybe have it in addition to it trying to automatically load.

And if Darren is the good guy I hope he is, he might also see about breaking the vid into bite-size (or day-size) chunks to make downloading even easier. Please, Darren? http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/otn/love/biggrinlove.gif

I think as many people as possible should be able to see the vid. It's really nifty! So anything that can be done to make it easier for folks to see it... http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/otn/love/biggrinlove.gif

Hi, I've been an avid SG fan for awhile, but this is my first time on the board.

I thought the Gatecon Video was well put together, but due to my hearing disability; I missed out a lot of what was said in the video. I've emailed the webmaster about obtaining or having a transcript of the video as a supplement to the video; and was told that there are no plans on making or posting a transcript.

To my disappointment; I guess I must be the only person with a hearing disability one with a hearing disability to make a request so that one can enjoy the site especially the video along with their hearing counterparts.

If someone on this board can spare the time to produce a transcript of the video so that I may enjoy it as much as you guys have I would greatly appreciate it. You can either ask that the webmaster posted on the site and/or email it to me @ [email protected]

Thanks for your time and your ears.

Thanks so much for such a fun glimpse into what goes on at the Vancouver con! I had no trouble with it running either.

A couple observations:

Teryl was as sweet as ever and did you notice her tearing up when she started to speak about "missing Janet"?

Don Davis seems to be following his bliss these days - good for him - that's how retirement is supposed to work :)

Colin is in love with AT - but then, so are you, David ... so are you ;) Who isn't?!

Seeing the "three Musketeers" arm in arm in the middle of the video was the best part for me: you can tell how close AT-CJ-MS are and that's why it's just so much fun to watch them in the series.

Did anyone notice the playful nudge CJ gave to Amanda and her fleeting expression when the subject of a S9 came up? I got the feeling that they all knew something that they couldn't share just yet ....

Loved that Walter and Siler had a chance to spend some time with you too, and JR with his Pringles :)

Hope you take the camera back next year - good job!

Second, if you right-click and go to properties, what file type does it say?

EDIT: NVM the link is dead, bad, kapoot, gone, no more, bye bye, adios, asta la vista, you get the idea. That's why it's saving it as an HTML page, the file no longer exists in that location. The mods are probably updating it. You'll have to wait, sorry.

OK, I see what your saying, but it's been doing this to me since I started....so will they put it back up? So I can continue to try?

that's a question for darren. it may be a bandwidth issue

as to amanda's question. it was brought to or by teh actors the differences between fans (very generally speaking) and the types of fiction, ship, slash....and then it had to be explained to chris about slash fic.....and chris even called some of it 'slipper' fiction

course, then the topic slid neatly down hill and got a wee bit bawdy ;)

David
August 6th, 2004, 12:57 PM
The paragraph below is not necessarily family-appropriate.

They began to categorize a little too deeply, going with slashers, shippers, and then (I cut this part out) "strippers," said MS. CJ said "That was just for the pilot, though." Michael started to blush, so I knew not to add that. Plus it wasn't too appropriate.

Hi Everybody.

As i scan through this forum Im noticing alot of people having problems loading the video, guess what, I am too....

Heres the deal, its not my computer (im a computer Tech and have done EVERYTHING needed to insure proper video playback).

The video starts to load, shows the GW Logo, then stops just around 1 second. Im on a T3 Lan connection, and im the only user on it, so its not my load time, I can download a 100Mb file in about 30 minutes, and 30Mb in like 10 minutes. And Yes, I did let it load. I left it loading for 12 hours while I was gone... no change...

So, I went and right clicked the link, selected save target as and downloaded the file. The file was 9.8Kb not 30Mb. Im thinking there may be an issue with the file.

Assistance would be great...

sounds like you downloaded the *link*, not the file. The file is there and is fine. Try downloading it from this link instead.

Again I say, try changing the name of the file when you right-click and "Save Target As...". i find I had teh same problem and taht worked for me. It had to do with "history"/"memory". For some reason, when trying to view it directly, my computer only loaded the first second and as such the "temp" file was only 9.8Kb. When I tried to save using the file name it already has, my browser just thinks it's the same file as the temp and therefore it doesn't really download it, all it does is copy the temp to where I told it to "download" to. When I change the name, it finally "realizes" it's a different file and actually downloads it as opposed to copying the temp over.

In short, try renaming it to something else when you save it, but be sure to keep the ".wmv" at the end.

PS- norriski: I got the same message as you about not recognizing the file extension, it still worke for me. The big problem with you and what others are encounterring is that you're not downloading the whole file, only a portion of it. Try clearing chache/Temporary Internet files (under Internet Explorer properties or "Internet Options" for IE users).

Video shows 38 minute length, but only plays 1 second of it.

Yipee...the last link put one here and saving it by a different name FINIALLY worked.....it took quite a while to download but I was expecting that...it was great, had fun seeing the "other" side (or I guess it's the real side) of the people we watch everyweek on TV...Thank you so much for putting the video together...make me really want to attend a convention someday.

Quick question to everyone: working video or not:

What browser are you using?

You see, Saving the file or trying to view it with internet explorer doesnt work for me.

So i tried one last thing. Netscape. And guess what... it works beautifully. But it still wont load in IE or save from IE.

Could it be something on the server? I know some of you Mac users are probably using IE, but its a different version of it... the mac IE is more like netscape than Ie...

So to everyone having problems still.. go download that annoying popup ridden thing known as netscape...

I used IE on both my comps with no problems. Netscape worked fine, too.

Have you tried using a download manager like GetRight? That usually works pretty well for me, even on problem files.

Cool video David (and all others involved), it was good watching.

I've never been to a convention before and this one seemed more casual and personal than I expected. Did you have more access to the cast because you were filming a doco or is it like that for all attendees? It looked like you were just filming people at a BBQ or something.

I think the best interviewees were Gary Jones(?) and Dan Shea. Gary especially was quite funny and genuine and seemed like he was having a good time.

I hate to critisize but Colin Cunningham gave off the impression that he didnt really want to be there. He kept looking around and fidgeting, he would have been hard to interview.

It was good to see the cast off the set, it gave me another perspective on Stargate.

it's so great to have such an opportunity, it'll be just like I am there!! Unfortunately, I am away from home right now and it'll be another two weeks until I go home, so hopefully the video will still be up here then!! Big thanx to the people who made the video!!

I wasn't able to watch or download the video. I've been trying for a while but it just downloads the "Gateworld" title screen. Any ideas on what I could do?

Well, it's official! The 40 minute Backstage Pass documentary will be included in the Gatecon 2004 DVD bundle!

MGM is buying YOUR backstage pass!? Thats awesome!

Ummm... MGM has nothing to do with Gatecon. Not directly, anyway. Gatecon is Gatecon's thing- it's fan run all the way. MGM is in bed with Creation for the "official" cons.

Correct. MGM authorizes Gatecon.

mgm tolerates gatecon, and other fan run cons.

only creation is 'official'

the main reason gatecon isn't official is because they lack the money to PAY mgm for the right to be official (yes, mgm doesn' give official blessing out of the goodness of their hearts. They are compensated quite well for that and in exchange for paying for the name of 'official', creation cons gets all that cool licensed stuff to sell

Correct. MGM authorizes Gatecon.

None the less, the fact that your movie is being sent around the world and translated into 80+ languages is awesome!

Ummm... it's being translated?? Where are you reading this? As far as I know, they only produce the one English version of the Gatecon DVDs on the assumption that most of the people who attend will actually be able to speak/understand English.

Of course, I also don't bother with the DVDs, so I wouldn't actually know, but I doubt they have the budget for something like this. It's still fan run, that means most of the money comes out of their own pockets. Er... right?

Gatecon DVDs are not manufactured or distributed by MGM, just one language, two versions: NTSC or PAL for different parts of the world.

GateWorld's partnership with Gatecon has taken the form of the Backstage Pass doc. Without their support we wouldn't have been able to pull it off, so we were happy to share it.

I can only imagine what we'll be able to accomplish together next year, but right now I'm actually thinking about two distinct video documentaries.
