DS-9 is GONE! :(

DS9 was one of the shows that I was hoping would make it to the top few, now I have Firefly and Doctor Who left. I voted for DS9 simply to preserve Buffy for as long as I could, it is, after all, one of the best fantasy series out there, only matched IMO by its spin-off Angel.
DS9 was without a doubt the best of the Trek's, the characters were much deeper and meaningful that those of all other Trek's and the storylines were far superior. The final seasons, those that covered the Dominion War were possibly the best years for sci-fi ever. It is a shame to see this show go.

Vote for the show you want OUT

My vote
Lost. I would rather this go out than Who, even though I love it. Who is just the far superior show, in fact besides Firefly Lost it is 1000% times better than any other on here. The characters are deeper and multi-layered and have complex emotions, unlike the basic 1 or 2 layered characters of Trek and BSG

FRACK.

Oh, for crying out loud... Doctor Who. Sorry. :hammond08:

This is the hardest vote I've had to make yet. I love both shows so much, and unlike Ptah, I think Lost's characters are hugely complex.
As much as I love the Doctor, the Daleks and the Cybermen (Two days!), I look forward to Lost each week more than Doctor Who. That's why I've voted Doctor Who out.
Anyway, my vote next round'll be the same again.

Actually I do think Lost's characters are complex, but it is one of four where they are. Lost, Farscape and Firefly are the ones I would say that the characters are in depth, i've edited my post to make it more clear. Had it been any show except Who or Firefly I would be keeping Lost, but it looses out to those two in my books.

Obviously, i'm voting Dr. Who out.

Lost - just complex. I like mysteries and trying to figure it all out. Plus, there's so many different characters with so many different personalities.

Lost is GONE

This is, in my opinion, the best American show running. The complexity of the story is only met ny that of the characters. Not only is it well written and well performed, but it has that special something about it that is getting more and more rare, the something that is undescribable, but you know that it is there. This is, to me a spectacular series and I would recomend it to anyone.

Shows left in:

Babylon 5
Battlestar Gallactica: The New Series
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Doctor Who: The New Series
Farscape
Firefly
Stargate SG-1
Stargate Atlantis
Star Trek: The Next Generation
The X-Files

It looks like Doctor Who and Buffy are soon to depart, and the show I'm backing looks like it wont last more than a few rounds. I have the horrid feeling that either SG1 or Star Trek: TNG are going to win :(

It's not that I dislike BSG. It seemed to have some good characters and storylines. But it was just too relentlessly dark, with no let up (at least the eps I saw). It was too depressing to keep watching. At least for me.

And I am at the point where I don't really dislike any of the shows left on the list so it comes down to which shows would you watch and BSG is at the bottom of the list.

Doctor Who is GONE :(

Revivals dont work, they never have and will continue not to work. There are of course exceptions, two of which were in this tournement. Doctor Who was always hugely popular in the UK, and it was cancelled without just reason in its 26th season. For the longest time fans were forced to wait, until 2005, when Christopher Eccleston took the role of the 9th Doctor on. The new show is very different. The Doctor becomes more and more human as the show goes on. The writting in general, epecially that of Russel T. Davies has been damn near flawless. The thought and planning is only out done by the execution and the acting of Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, John Barrowman, David Tennant, and Noel Clark amongst others. Sure the how may be a bit cheesy and camp, but that is what the show is about. It is about the rustic, lawless universe. This is no military operation pulled off by the Federation or the SGC, this is one man, the last of his species trying to preserve the timeline, living alone for all time. This is without a doubt one of the greatest shows currently running.

I had to think about the other revival series, then I remembered. :S Hmm, methinks that the last two series we'll be voting for, is already a foregone conclusion...

*edit* Very well put Ptah. Dr Who has been outstanding, maybe last night was just a minor hiccup. I think R.T. Davis should right LOL! write all the stories imo. I would've been lying to myself if I chose B5 to go out in the elimination round.

WTF is wrong with me? Typos galore :S

Well, we've been just voting for a while now, but with the list getting ever shorter, it might be time to have a debate "on the merits" of the remaining choices....

Babylon 5 (ran 5 seasons; critical acclaim; 2 Hugo awards)
Battlestar Gallactica: The New Series (going into 3rd season, critical acclaim)
Buffy The Vampire Slayer (ran 6 years; fantasy category)
Farscape (ran 4 years)
Firefly (13 episodes and a movie)
Stargate SG-1 ( 9 seasons and counting )
Stargate Atlantis (3 seasons and counting )
The X-Files (ran 9 years; Called 2nd greatest cult TV show (after Trek)

All the Trek is gone, so no use making the obvious point of continuity problems. It is amazing that Firefly is still on the list and that's a testimony to its "potential" but can we honestly select it on that basis?

Babylon 5 is the only series in this list to win a Hugo and it won 2 of them. From strictly a historical perspective, B5 changed TV science fiction back to its serial roots.

SG-1 had (seasons 1-7) the best acting, most entertaining story, and among the best continuity of any series of its type. Its longevity and accessibility ($40 for a DVD season) also elevate it. Great television...

I like SGA, but what's the story? Seems like a return to episode TV to me. The aliens are so foreign that they are hard to connect with.

BGA is a real modern Sci Fi show, with superb acting, but does it entertain?

I will leave Farscape, Buffy and the X-files for others to advocate, since I have never watched any of them.

Celsius

Well I will do my part in supporting Buffy and Farscape :D

Buffy has an amazing mixture of comedy, drama, action, mythology, horror, romance and tragedy that I haven't seen in any other show. Together with a superb range of actors and an excellent series of plots (except maybe season 7), Buffy entertained me in a way I don't think any of the other shows on the list could ever have done, except for Angel and...

Farscape! Ok, there is uneven-ness in this series, but it made sci-fi interesting for me, because it is very minimal on the technobabble and focuses far more on character relationships and development. It's up there with Buffy in terms of original storylines and the mixture of comedy, drama and action is always good.

I was never able to get into shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica etc., because I just didn't find them very interesting, though I know a lot of purer sc-fi fans will disagree.

Anyway that's just my two penny's worth :)

Actually Battlestar Galactica won a Hugo last year for the episode "33" in the best dramatic presentation short form category (something along those lines).
And I think they're nominated again for "Pegasus" but I'm not quite sure on that.....can't remember. :)

I'll advocate BSG. :)

There's no way around it, this is the most original sci-fi in years- there hasn't been a sci-fi show since the X-Files that is so accessable to the non-genre fan. The acting is as good as it gets anywhere- from the lead players to recurring, to guest stars, there are remarkable performances all over the screen. The characters we care about, and love despite all their flaws, because deep down they are human without the moral superiority that the characers in Star Trek and other sci-fi so often have. Not by choice, they are heroes everyday, and that makes them admirable.

The show evolves like no other, it's not afraid to take turns, make changes, and it refuses to sit in a safe, formulaic rut. This is what makes it so real. The characters, circumstances, they all change. It's a show that refuses to go stagnant, proving that the remarkability found in season one was no happy accident.

BSG is a show that has done no less then re-invent, and re-invogorat the genre, proving that sci-fi isn't always about phasers and problems aren't always solved by reversing shield polarity. Sci-fi is about people and how they deal with the life they are shoved, and these characters make what they can of it. That is the making of a great story, and a great show.

It's a show that tells you what to think about, not what to think.
It provokes internal and external examination of oneself: values, beliefs, how we make decisions. It talks about our world, our time, in a way that no other show can.

And it's got the best SFX out there making for some remarkable space battles. That can never hurt.

So in the end BSG rules the day!

My picks for top three are probably B5, BSG and Farscape. I'm not sure of the order, depends on what day you ask me. ;)

BSG is a little difficult to put up there because it's only had 2 seasons, but I have a lot of confidence in Ron Moore and am assuming S3 will continue the quality I've seen in S1 and S2. I totally agree with everything Trek_Girl42 said about the show. I do think it's reinvigorated the genre. The cast is amazing and there have been so many episodes that have grabbed me emotionally and stayed with me for days after I've seen them. The cliffhanger at the end of S1 blew me away and then they managed to do it again at the end of S2. I admire RM for pushing the envelope and not playing it safe.

I really enjoyed Firefly but it's just hard to judge with only 13 episodes and a movie. Such wasted potential, what a shame. I was never a huge fan of Buffy because I just didn't like the characters that much. I liked Angel a lot more, actually.

I'll always love SG-1 but it's because I love the characters and because it's been such fun to watch the show over the years. :) It's been very consistent entertainment. But I think B5, BSG and Farscape pushed the envelope a little more in terms of being ground-breaking scifi. I also love long, emotional, complex story arcs and I think B5, BSG (so far) and Farscape have the edge in that area.

*still mourning Star Trek...* I mean, really, to go before a show that didn't even have one full season.
I might as well use this quote to start my praise for Firefly.

IMO Firefly deserves to win this tournement. From Day 1 it was in trouble. The network didnt want it for one thing, they had asked Joss to make a new show, and when he gave them Firefly they only put it on because they had nothing else. They felt, despite the fact that it was virtually essential to understanding the show, that airing the episodes out of order was a good idea. The Pilot was one of the last episodes released, and the others were also jumbled, which meant that the story couldnt flow in the way that Joss wanted it to. By the time they were filming the episode "The Message" it was cancelled, despite having numerous fans protesting, online petitions and magazine articles, Fox didnt want a Sci-fi and left the show to die. But in the few episodes we have, the show gave us the most in depth characters ever. Mal, a military man, who lost his faith when he lost a war and most of his platoon, he refused to give up even after the surrender and still fights on now in his own way. Simon and River, the brother and sister who had everything, until River went away to "The Acadamy" where she was experimented on, Simon gave up everything and made himself a criminal just to save her.
IMO Firefly has better characters than any of the other shows on the list (Farscape may be the only other show with as deep characters and stories). The storyline was interesting to say the very least. It showed us a future based on our past, more realistic than any of the things we see on Trek, a galaxy where the rich and the poor live segregated because of war and prejudice.
IMO anyone who says that Firefly is here because of its potential is wrong. IMO it is here because of what it was, a stunningly well made show with true emotion created by a genious of television shows and acted by some of the best out there.
If this doesnt deserve to be here, nothing does.

What is there to say about BSG? Well, with it gone, this tournament has lost it's heart. For me anyway, because there's simply nothing left on the list that even remotely compares to what BSG has done for sci-fi. It's the most revolutionary show for the genre since ST:TOS/TNG, and I hope that those who voted against it will give it another try- I hope someday you can see in this show what I see, or at least like it a little more.:)

Personal attachment to the characters is still the big factor. I was put off by the dark tone of BSG (though I have not voted for it even once... I know it's good) but IF I sat down and really let it in, I'm sure I would admire it a lot .... as art that is. Where I'm at in life, I need some laughs, which Firefly and Stargate and Atlantis have in abundance. I think one of the reasons Trek is gone is the world has just moved away from the perfect people that populated too many of the Trek shows. I agree that Firefly belongs in this group, just not at the very top of it. I wish Enterprise had been like Firefly, primitive, charactered with something pre-federation, looser with a few companions thrown in... he he ....

Thanks Ptah! for your Firefly rant!. IMO, the network kinda P/O with Joss at the time, he's the only one who got THREE shows at the same time on network TV, and it kinda bugged a lot of people. IIRC, it's doomed since the beginning when they put it on Friday night, the lowest watch night & at the same time ANGEL show-time was shuffled from Tuesday, to Sunday to whatever, but the fans keep following it. TBH, I'm not so fussed about the rest of these shows...

As for the people who say trek portrayed too many "perfect" people, that's quite a generalisation. They may have lived in a "utopian" society from our POV but the people were far from perfect. Even, Picard in all his wisdom, years and experience, was still human (see First Contact) and really showed no matter what face you put on humanity we still have these basic instincts. IMO TNG and DS9 should really still be here along with the new BSG. Amazing sci-fi and TV shows in general.

If this poll wasn't on a SG board, the results would vary greatly.

kmiller1610
May 16th, 2006, 04:46 PM
As for the people who say trek portrayed too many "perfect" people, that's quite a generalisation.

You're right, of course

I really liked the Trek characters who has obvious flaws. Kirk's impulsiveness, Spock's over-reliance on logic, the EMH Doctor's huge ego. What was Picard's flaw? Oh yes. He was afraid of children. Picard is the most perfect character and best acted perfect sci-fi character I've ever seen. His anger with the Borg was the result of a mental rape, no fault of his own, for sure.

Flaws and complementary strengths make people interesting. But besides these few examples, so many others had really no consistent faults or shortcomings ( which are mirror images of their strengths). I guess you could say that Odo was on a quest for love. Or Data was striving to become human. But neither were designed to be human, so how do "we" relate to that?

Daniel's academic tunnel vision, Jack's pain and "simplicity", Sam's inability to love when she's so amazing at everything else: these are traits that make the people 3 dimensional and endearing.....

Take Firefly, for example. The show starts with people who almost all have a secret, a persistent problem or character flaw that they need to deal with. They strive to stay on task because they are all on the run from their identity, their flaws or their past. Firefly is still on the list because everyone who has really watched the show is begging for more, not more battles, more sex or more of anything but those people and how interesting their flaws and possibilities are.....

Just my opinion, of course .......

L-JADE

And Joss crushed our hope by killing 2 of these character, I applaud for his ability to kill his characters without mercy, but sometimes it just too harsh. Book's death was acceptable (yeah I know!) but Wash was just too much, for me, that one makes me cringe & don't want to see Serenity again and again. I think this feeling is also shared by some of the fans. However I sure like to see Firefly again and again since there's still 'hope' in the series (but not in the film)

One place where Firefly AND SG-1 AND the original Trek:TOS mirror each other is how complementary weaknesses create tension and interest.

For example, on Firefly, the doctor's naivete and the engineer's huge libido

or Spock's cool logic and Kirk's driving passion

or Daniel's complexity and Jack's simplicity ......

or on Cheers, Sam's simple minded wisdom and Diane's overcomplication of everything....

Doesn't have a lot to do with Sci Fi or Fantasy, just good writing ....

:( Sorry to see BSG go. And looks like B5 may not be far behind. I never watched B5 until about three years ago. Then I decided to watch the whole series in just a few months. Not a perfect show (S1 and S5 were a little weak) but I thought S2-S4 were top notch. I happen to love long story arcs and B5 really excelled in that area. Also had some great characters - both main and supporting - as well. But most of all there were episodes and dialogue that made you ponder all the things good scifi should make you ponder: the future of human interaction with other species, the awe and wonder of scientific achievement, the building of civilizations, the "wow" factor that separates excellent scifi from the kind that entertains you but doesn't stick with you longer than your last fast food meal.

B5 seems a little dated now, I suppose, the special effects don't compare to some of the series on today. But read the scripts and it holds up as well as any. :)

Okay, I'll be honest. I thought that Firefly was good but I was never overwhelmed by it. I haven't seen the movie yet but just watched all the episodes again when they replayed on SciFi and still feel the same way.

B5, Farscape and SG1 are my favorites amoungst what is left.

The X-Files
Stargate: SG-1

BSG is gone. :(

BSG runs circles around SGA. There is no way BSG should have gone before it. Me. I like and appreciate the dark tone of BSG. And it can get really dark as it delves into the heart of humanity. I know our current world has enough bleakness to go around, but that still doesn’t deter me from enjoying this show. BSG has a depth to it that SGA doesn’t have and even SG-1 to a degree. I know the dark thing is not everyone’s cup of tea, but even on SG-1, I usually enjoyed the darker episodes to a greater degree - Unnatural Selection, The Other Side off the top of my head. That’s why I thought SGA has/had potential. It seemed to be willing to push a little deeper into the darker side of humanity. Though I think they seemed to have backed off. I guess out of fear of backlash since Stargate isn’t known for that kind of characterization. It’s more light and fluffy. Usually at the end of the day the good guys always walk away victorious. Not so on BSG. On BSG sometimes you’ve got to question who are the good guys. It’s not always clear-cut. BSG challenges you to think about certain issues and question the actions of characters. BSG has been the highlight of my Friday nights for the past two seasons.

About Trek. I enjoyed TNG and I would venture to say that I have seen every episode. But I watched them when they originally aired, and when they originally aired, I was in the third grade in elementary school when it premiered and a sophomore by the time it finished it’s run. So obviously I didn’t grasp the complexity of the show and enjoyed it more for the stories than whatever message it was trying to send. Now that I’m older, the episodes don’t quite have the appeal that they once had. Probably because I now get the deeper meanings of what it was trying to “say.” The whole utopian society just doesn’t gel with me. Guess because I find that too idealistic and out there to ever become a reality. Even in the distant future. Honestly, humanity just doesn’t have it in it to accomplish that. And obviously Trek’s world wasn’t completely perfect and the characters of course still had their flaws, but eh there’s just something about TNG, in that it doesn’t have as high a rewatchability factor with me. It’s still interesting to rewatch episodes, but I guess I’m just not one of those idealistic people. Between TNG and DS9, I liked DS9 more. It was more removed from the Trek world of TNG because it’s setting was on a remote outpost so it had a less developed feel to it civilization wise. You could say the same for the other shows that are left that I really love - Firefly, B5, and Farscape. In each of those, the characters were on the outskirts of civilization and had to “rough it” on their own. Same goes for BSG. The characters have become separated from the civilization that they once knew and are now having to walk that line between maintaining a hold on the ideals that that civilization had but yet balancing them with the actual situation they face. You can’t always apply the same rules for every situation. Thus some unsavory choices have been made on BSG that ordinarily wouldn’t have been considered in their old lives, but times have changes as so you can’t always play by the old rules. Thus the show makes you think about how far outside those old rules is acceptable. Should it be acceptable to sacrifice some standards to survive or should some standards be upheld no matter the cost of adhering to them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farscape

Farscape (1999 – 2003) is science fiction television series, featuring a present-day astronaut who accidentally travels through a wormhole to a distant part of the galaxy. The series is one of a new generation of popular science fiction television shows in which the main concerns are surviving in a hostile, chaotic universe and dealing with interpersonal conflicts - instead of exploration, warfare or law enforcement.

So... they leave out the living spaceship they're on, the Peacekeeper/Scarran war, the search for earth, oh! and the fact that they're all Peacekeeper prisoners... :P

From IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187636/plotsummary):

"Astronaut John Crichton, on an experimental space mission, is accidentally hurled across the universe into the midst of an intergalactic conflict. Trapped among alien creatures wielding deadly technology and hunted by a merciless military race, Crichton is on an epic odyssey more spectacular than anything he has ever imagined."

That's a very very generic description of the show. Farscape has exploration (they explore the uncharted territories, they look for wormholes, etc). It has warfare (Scarrans vs Peacekeepers, it gets so bad John builds a bomb that's going to destroy the galaxy to try to get them to settle their differences peacefully- I know that doesn't sound right but it makes sense on the show). It has law enforcement (the Peacekeepers and many other races think they should control everybody else).

Like most good tv shows it is way to complex to sum up in a sentence. That's like saying B5 is about the interpersonal conflicts of people on a space station.

I think you have a very narrow view of SF. Why is a stranded spaceman exploring the space he ends up in any less SciFi than someone who sets out to go there? SciFi is not just about exploring other worlds (at least to me), it's about exploring the future and the different ways we might get there. It's about the different ways humans might develop. I tend to prefer shows set currently but with a little twist. But if I fall in love with the characters, I'm willing to go with the flow and see what happens. I don't really care if it's labeled 'Science Fiction' by the media or whoever.

I think Best series is a misnomer. It's really favorite, because what makes up best is too subjective. There was a discussion in one of the SG episode tournies on what makes the best episode. Which no one really agreed on because various people thought characters, action, dialogue, special effects, plot, etc were all more important.

I'm not voting for a show because it has better plots or writing, or more awards. I'm voting for the shows I enjoyed the most, the shows that I want to watch again, that made me think, that stirred me enough to join an a fandom (on or offline).

Each to their own :) Perhaps it's because I've been influenced much more by the fantasy genre, but I didn't find myself overly impressed by what I saw of Babylon 5. I admit I've only watched a few episodes, but after a few episodes of Buffy, Angel, Farscape or Stargate I was hooked.

* B5 is one long story that you need to watch from the beginning. It is in a class all of it's own with complex subplots and character development. I really like all of the remaining shows. I watch alot of sci fi/fantasy but I watch each show for different reasons, they're all in different categories for me but are at the top of each of my categories.

B5 for it's complex story lines and great characterisations. You can watch it multiple times and pick up tiny new things all the time that enhances the story.

Buffy is such a great series made from a crap movie. I just love everything about this series even though vampires scare the crap out of me (yup I can't watch horror movies).

Farscape - off the wall totally, but great fun and great characters.

Firefly - this one had such potential and the dweebs that cancelled only realised it too late. Oh well, at least we got Serenity.

SG-1 - lightweight but good with great characters, well up until S9 IMO.

The X-Files - a great combination of monster of the week and myth arc episodes. S1-5 were excellent, S6-7 were good but not the same and then it went downhill.

The X-Files. As someone has already said, S1-5 rocked, but after that it started to loose it. Farscape on the other hand was consistantly brilliant.
