I like this episode. It has lots of nice little character moments, espeically between Jonas and Teal'c, Teal'c and his sense of humor, and Jonas with his food fetish. ;)

Now if only they could get a Ha'tak and keep it in one piece long enough to study

It was a fun episode. Kinda reminded me of Titantic when Jack and Sam were paddling through the water of the sinking ship.

I loved the samurai Jaffa in this episode. I hope they make a comeback.

The part at the beginning with Jonas and Teal'c on the Tel'tac (?) was priceless. Teal'c's face when he says 'Are you suggesting an alien conspiracy?' (or something along those lines) is amazing, it made me laugh so much.

I am wondering how long Jonas had to hold his breath underwater to get the force fields to the glider bay online. It had to be quite a few minutes, especially when he had to swim to the rings.

I noticed that too. It seemed like an awfully long time, and I was very impressed that he was able to hold his breath for that long. I didn't think his physiology was that different to that of Earthlings, but in Descent I had to question that. Oh well, it was a good episode overall.

And who came up with those Ninja Jaffa?

I'm not too sure about that, but I am glad they were there. I was getting bored with Jaffa that could only march and fire a staff weapon. Because if there was one thing that was lacking with Stargate SG1 it was the non-presence of Ninjas.

The producers wanted Anubis's jeffa to be different from the snakeheads that followed Apophis around. This is from some interview with someone, I can't remember who

This was a pretty good episode.. But why was Davis along?

I was happy to see Davis along, but couldn't really figure out exactly why he was there - that was never explained in the episode.

However, apparently Colin Cunningham's manager got wind of this episode and asked CC how well he knew Peter DeLuise. CC phoned up PD and suggested that the role as written could easily be re-written to include Major D. instead. PD decided that CC was right and the episode was rewritten to include Davis.

Personally, it's one of my favorite episodes. I loved the team dynamic, I enjoyed the storyline, I always love Jacob and Davis, that the Death Gliders work underwater is neat, and the effect of the transport rings with the water was very, very cool. It's a fun episode.

Davis is an Admin Bod. A very competent Admin Bod. And a sneaky one too. He only has to get the right form signed by the right person, and whoosh, he's selected for the next spaceship-mission. No one queried it cos all the admin had been done correctly. Of course it had.

So, there he is, lovely Major Davis the whizzo pen-pusher, IN SPACE! Wow, he had an exciting time. But he's not going to do it again, thanks. He found that he missed his nice big desk and his cup of tea. And thrilling as space flight is, it just isn't as fulfilling as making sure all the forms are filled in properly and the files are neat.

I like Davis aswell. When he first appeared he did fit into the admin kind of sterotype and he was spoken sternly to by Hammond a couple of times for giving up hope on SG1. However, he now appears on a more regular basis and seems to be quite helpful and resourceful without having real speciality like many of the other characters. I'm only up to the end of season 6 but I hope he continues to play a role in the SGC.

Madeleine

I like Davis too. I re-read my post and it's ever so snide sounding, I didn't mean it to be.

I'm an Admin Bod myself. And I've always wanted to be an astronaut.

Dear Paul, he gives hope to us desk jockeys that one day, you never know, we might get to be spacemen ;)

Anthro Girl, thanks for the link.

"My line is 'What´s the problem?' Which is kind of funny, cause it´s pretty obvious that the problem is that the door won´t open." Heh. :D

And the episode in itself, I really like. Jonas´ little smile at Teal'c at the beginning, and the 'alien conspiracy' talk, was great. Actually, all the scenes between Jonas and Teal'c were great.

Two of my favorite lines in this episode are both from Jack:

"Tell him I take back everything I was thinking while I was under water."

*gestures towards the 'Tablet-Thing-That´s-Supposed-To-Be-Thor'* "Sure you´ve got *all* of him in there? He's a smart guy, you know."

And did I, for once, spot a cameo by Peter DeLuise? Blue jumpsuit-guy? Yay for me, if that´s the case.

Makes sense that Anubis would have an alternate-methodology Jaffa force, since he's really all about pushing for change instead of using the same-old, same-old. (Except for the arrogance thing, but when has a System Lord ever NOT been arrogant?) Too bad this was really the only time we saw them in action, though.

Also, Jonas stayed underwater so long because Corin Nemec used to be a lifeguard and expert swimmer. Great buildup to one of the coolest ring transports ever -- *splash!*

I have one scene to shoot today. And I have one line. "What's our status?" So, we're ready to shoot the scene, I hear my que, walk in and say, "How's are status?" DeLuise tells me that he can hire a coach to work with me in my trailer if I'd like.

Corin has a fantastic lung capacity, and I'm sure I read somewhere that he used to be a lifeguard. That was how he was able to do such long shots underwater.

Very good episode, although not one to watch if you have a fear of drowning! :D

Didn't he quit after season 6? It would be good to bring him back.

SPOILERS 'HEROES PART II'; 'LOST CITY PART II'; 'AFFINITY'

See what happens? Davis leaves:
a. We lose Janet (I make no apologies, that sucked)
b. Nuby attacks Earth (okay, so he failed, but only just)
c. Hammond gets deposed (if only briefly)
d. Sam gets engaged (and to the wrong guy, in my never-humble opinion)

Clearly, we need Davis back!

This one was great! Jonas has lots of potential as a character, is this really the guy from Parker Lewis Can't Loose? :p I really like this guy he does a great job filling the void left by Jackson. His escape from the water was clever. The effect of the water in the rings was really really good.

Descent is a good episode. There is a good mix of action and drama and it is an episode that would actually leave you wondering what Daniel would have actually been able to do in this situation (my money would have been on their being no need for Major Davis). It was an episode that showed Jonas trying to prove himself and earn his place on SG-1, as he obviously knew how he really was chosen. The only niggle I had with this episode was that Jack knew that he was still on the ship and had helped them get into the glider bay and yet he seemed willing to leave him behind. Jonas was running behind them all "Wait for me!". He'd read all of the mission reports and he probably knew Jack and the SGC's philosophy on 'We don't leave our people behind' yet its obvious at this point that he doesnt consider Jonas one of his people, yet it only takes his presence in the glider a couple of minutes later for him to be all "All of SG1 present and accounted for." I don't understand what made him chnge his mind so quick. He knew what Jonas had done, and yet not even Sam or Teal'c looked ready to wait for him. They knew he had no other way off the ship at this point. Ooh rant over. Still liked the episode though!

i realized i posted here (wAAAAAAAAAY back when i was a wee prim'tah :D) but i never read it :D

i didn't realize so many other people loved this episode, or loved having major davis in this episode, as much as i did :p :)

From Colin Cunningham's diary of filming the episode (you'll find the link to it earlier in this thread):

My lines have been cut back considerably on this episode (not complaining) and so I'm wondering what kind of spin I can put on the whole thing, since I've only the occasional, "Colonel, look!" kind of dialogue. And so, I'm thinking... What if I play these scenes like I've got a big crush on Major Carter? Just the odd look from time to time. Though I think Peter [DeLuise] would probably laugh me off the stage. I'm still not sure if I should tell him, or just do it. We shall see. I gotta get some sleep. This is ridiculous.

I thought it was cute. Heck, I just think Davis is cute, period. Yowsa. :D

Course, later in the diary he claims he 'nixed the idea'. ;)

On the commentary they say that Corin Nemec really can hold his breath that long; they were surprised. Apparently, they'd been expecting to have to pass it off as alien abilities, but if a normal human can do it (albeit one with an extraordinarily good ability to hold his breath) then there's no need to play the "alien" card. Unless Corin Nemec is an alien?!

Aha! One of the great mysteries of the universe solved! This is kind of off topic, but it comes from CC's set diary of "Descent" so I'll post it here anyway.

Y'know on "Behind the Stargate: Secrets Revealed" how one of the internet questions was "Is Christopher Judge really white?" That bothered me, because where in the world would that come from? Now I know!

10:29 am

Arrive at the studio. Grabbed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich since 'breakfast' ended a long time ago. Went through Hair and the brown mousse scalp treatment once again. I look like Engleburt Humperdink. After the 'doo' was finished, I sat down in the make up chair. Make Up is an amazing department. You come in looking like ****, and you walk out looking like Fabio. A bit of paint, touch of powder, and voila! Super hunk. But they truly can do some amazing things. You'd never know it, but Christopher Judge is actually 90 pounds and white.

and another side note after reading that diary: CC is hilarious!! and totally random!! :D kinda reminds me of the kind of stuff I would write down (of course about 100 times funnier!) and that disturbs me somehow :p

and i agree: corin nemec is an alien ;) hell, his name even SOUNDS more alien than jonas' :D :D

I had heard somewhere on this forum or another other that Corin had been a lifeguard at one time. It that is so, he probably did his own swimming and stuff. I think TPTB wanted the fans to believe that he could hold his breath that long because he was not from earth.

It is actually one of my favorite episodes (besides Fallen, Window of Opprotunity and Citizen Joe). The character play in this episode was awesome. And ninja jaffa whatever next power ranger jaffa? :D
The one bit that really grates on me is when they go onboard and see that the ship was abandoned and whatever made the jaffa abandon the ship was more than likely still there. So they look at the blast doors with scorch marks all over it notice theres no air in that compartment and then proceed to blow up the door and wonder in! My first thought was I wonder what was nasty enough to make them abandon ship! And then shock and surprise when the scientist dies! :(
Apart from that the whole episode was full of setbacks and things not going well for the team..I loved it! Jonas and his photographic memory were useful and him and teal'c were funny together.
They did mention a tidal wave before landing but didn't seem too concerned after they landed, I presume it was far away from land!

while he was underwater, meaning that he took the water
with him. A great special effect!

Plus, the Death glider scene was cool. I never knew that
those things could fly underwater.

Very enjoyable episode!

I'm glad Jonas was able to do something to earn the respect of the team, especially O'Neill. The line at the end when Jack says that all of sg-1 are accounted for or something like that, was good to hear cause I really like Jonas and its nice to know he's gained acceptance from O'Neill, albeit reluctantly :)

Also love all the water scenes, they were very cool indeed. When Carter and O'Neill resurfaced from the water, "Tell him I take back everything I was thinking while I was underwater" and as a lot of other people have said, Teal'c and Jonas' "Alien conspiracy" conversation was hilarious

Very cool ep ;)

Descent was an awesome episode Goa'uld mother ship, ninja Jaffa, the saving of Thor's consciousness. Not to mention Jonas's first time in space, on a Ha'tak, under the ocean, and in a Death Glider. I loved the whole disposable Friesan character that they kill off within 10 minutes of the beginning of the episode. It was also hilarious to see Peter DeLuise as Lt. Dagwood, his cameos are always fun to watch for.

anyone else wonder why the Jaffa didn't just crash the ship into the ground instead of the ocean? if they had no only they would've killed SG-1 once and for all but also alot of people b/c of the massive explosion (like in s5ep1 Enemies).

this isn't a "i hate SG-1" post (b/c i don't), it's just an honest question. would u crash the ship into the ocean and have your enemies probably survive or the ground killing your enemies?

I love this episode! I watched it the first time on tv and wasn't at all thrilled about it... they had just killed off Daniel :danielanime08:(I still didn't get the whole Ascension thingy...) and I did not like Jonas (poor :jonas18:,)... But - I think it was last week - when I finally bought the dvds of s6 and watched the whole season again that I started to enjoy the character (knowning Danny would be back :):daniel:)... and I adore this eps for oh-so many reasons: Jack doesn't get to keep the ship (poor :jack:!), Peter DeLuise was in the ep, Jacob worrying bout Sam when she's drowning a wet Jack (:samanime24::samanime51:) and I could go on forever!

Great ep!

Good episode

I was somewhat disappointed though they did not create some CGI that show the ship crashing into the ocean in one piece. I was almost caught by surprise when one moment they are facing earth, and the next they are flooded by sea water. Of course I was caught off guard, probably wasn't paying attention when they talk about the ship already in the ocean and hammond was talking about the asteroid thing

Other than that, its great. Nice to see Thor will be saved, I like that Asgard alien

I like these self-contained episodes in which SG-1 are stuck and have to figure out how to escape (okay, I guess that describes most episodes, but you know what I mean). This one is a little bit "sterile" and formulaic, at least until the ship starts to flood. Better than average, not wonderful. It's also the first show where I've really felt Daniel's absence.

Due to budget constraints they obviously had to skip some stuff such as the mothership crashing into the ocean. However, Major Davis says that the crash will cause a huge tidal wave. That never happened, with no explanation as to why. It's also a bit jarring that everyone on board seems to survive the crash with no injuries, and there's no internal damage. Just a little mention that it was a rough ride would have sufficed, it pushes the believability factor a bit too far that the crash landing was no problem.

I'm also not sure why Davis is with them, he's not really a field officer that we've seen before, just a Pentagon liaison.

Don't like the samurai Jaffa, why would they exist? I guess they were concievably taken by Apophis from some planet evolved from samurai culture, but it's odd. All other Jaffa no matter where they are from use the same weapons and fighting styles, why would these be different? Ah, who cares.

It's a fun episode. Jonas sure can hold his breath for a long time. Loved the water being transported in the rings with him!

RATING: 7 out of 10

Thing I wonder about: if the samurai jaffa killed Friesen with a sword, why is there no blood?

I've always figured Jack gave Jonas a hard time to see whether he could follow orders. As much as he liked and admired Daniel, he could never count on him to follow orders; I think after 5 years of that he wants someone who will.

Tuesday night and another ep of SG1...

1. A Ha'tak showing up in Earth orbit was certainly an interesting one...

2. This is the first ep where Jonas really was able to slot into the team...the first time he seemed to really 'belong' in the show.

3. Rewatching this ep it's an example of how Jonas offered a fresh perspective on SG1, here was a very smart guy from a 1940s technology level world. If you took a very smart guy from circa 1948 and threw them into 2002...you would get someone like Jonas if we had to get rid of Daniel you did need a non-military perspective on the team!. And this was the ep where Jonas started to do the business!

4. Thor, on the ship, very nice stunt from the grey guy!

5. "All members of SG1 present and correct". Said it all!

First great ep of the season.

Loved the mystery of a seemingly abandoned Goa'uld mothership just turning up on its own for no apparent reason in Earth's orbit. To find out that it's got Thor's mind in its computers, and that he believed that O'Neill and co would work out he was there and find a way to rescue him was an interesting idea.

Also liked the idea and the effect of Jonas beaming in with the water in the transportation rings!

Quite an interesting revelation that death gliders could fly under water! Good thing too, otherwise no more SG-1! :P

This is a good mystery episode and I think a good episode for establishing Jonas. Thier was so much going on in Redemption thier wasn't enough to develop and quantify where Jonas stands on SG1. I like how this episode shows Jonas' doubt and then we see Jonas save the day to rescue the team. More important it starts the bonding of Teal'c and Jonas which I always found important for his short time on SG1. It always seemed that the two aliens had a close friendship bond while they were on the show. As for the plot itself it was a fun mystery. Even I did not quite understand what was going on. Yes it was obvious after discovering it was the same ship that Thor was kidnapped on that he was related to the malfunctions but to the extent he was involved in why this Goa'uld ship was acting so strange was something different and completely unpredictible. A really solid episode

First though before they boarded the mothership: "Replicators" ...
When I saw ninjas, my thoughts was like "WTF"
Then I figured it was Thor in the computer.
But it all played out well, loved the dialogue between Teal'c and Jonas.
And the underwater scene with Jonas was really cool, especially when he transports out, with the water around him. He saved Jacks butt and is now accepted.
And they all got away just in time, but not empty handed. Looking forward to see what will become of the 2 gliders.
This season should continue like this, even though I checked the ratings, and apparently they do not. I will learn soon :jonas:

The one reason why this episode is awesome, is the thing that Corin does when Jonas overwrites the controls to get the forcefield up in the glider bay... He takes a deep breath and disappears under water to do his thing, and he makes it look so damn easy. And he really did do it himself. Mad respect! :D

So, we get another attempt at a mothership, and again we frak it up. Granted it was doomed from the start. Anubis was pretty clever to leave those ninja's on board. That's a pretty smart trap set.

Jonas gets to be part of SG1 and is immediately ordered to stay behind... which he uses to eat his first banana of many. :p

And Major Davis gets to go off with them. That's nice to see. :) He deserves to go out once in a while.

Peter Deluise as Lieutenant Dagwood, nice throw back to SeaQuest.

This episode is excellent! It is also on my top 10 list ( if I actually had a list ;)).

I loved a mothership being controlled by Thor coming to be rescued by SG1--perfect! He also saved Sam and Jack from drowning, which was also a great scene!

I love the dynamic that Teal'c and Jonas have together. Teal'c tries to make Jonas feel better, but doesn't quite succeed,so he then tells a joke about alien invasion. When Jonas is trying to figure out if it really was a joke it made me laugh. :)

It is always good to see Jacob, ninja Jaffa, a poor hapless scientist redshirt, a wonky mothership, Thor, Major Davis, and death gliders flying through water in one episode!

Most of all, it was brilliant to see Jonas shine by holding his breath for a really long time to overwrite the controls to save SG1! Finally, Jack acknowledges Jonas's worth to the team, and promply wipes the smile off of his face by doing a 360. Love it!

Most of all, it was brilliant to see Jonas shine by holding his breath for a really long time to overwrite the controls to save SG1!

It's an incredible stunt that Corin Nemec pulled off by himself in one take, without needing extra air from any emergency diver in the pool with him. It's a damn hard thing to do, what he did, but damn, I'm amazed every single time. :vala09:

It's a pretty straightforward episode with a small set and lots of action. The ninjas were a nice touch, and hey Thor... he's still alive, albeit synthesized and currently inhabiting the electronics of a Goa'uld ship but he's there -- all of him tucked away in an oversized thumbdrive.

It was nice to see Major Davis out and about. He doesn't get to go out much so he must have been thrilled, up until the point where they crashed into the ocean I imagine, but thrilled nonetheless.

Didn't care much for the red shirt -- Friesman... or whatever his name was.

Perhaps Davis felt he had been out of the game too long to be handling a P90, or, you know, they weren't supposed to run into any trouble so he didn't feel the need to come fully equipped, just the standard side-arm.

It's always nice to see Jacob in an episode. It's been so long since I watched this one that I remembered very little of it; it was as close to watching a new episode of Stargate: SG=1 as I expect to get.

I like the opening mystery as to why a Goa'uld vessel would be abandoned so close to Earth.

I also think that they did a good job with Jonas on his first mission; I suppose this must pick up immediately after the end of the previous episode. His wonder is nice to watch now, although it irritated me a bit the first time around, as did the way he talked about reading all of the mission reports. Mitchell had soured me on the latter. I also think that RDA did well showing Jack's adjustment to having Jonas on the team. He accepted him, as an alternative to having a Russian officer on SG-1, but I think that, as of the beginning of the episode, his first preference would have been to remain a three-person team with himself, Sam and Teal'c.

It's almost bizarre to think that, just a few years after the SGC were trying to see what could be salvaged from a Goa'uld vessel, Earth would have faster, more powerful vessels at its disposal.

It was more than a little predictable that, having been left behind, Jonas would end up playing a crucial role in saving the day, but it was to be expected, and Corin Nemec did really well. The scenes with Jonas and Teal'c were great.

There was a nice amount of suspense in this episode, which I enjoy. I also think that it was good as a team episode; it may have been Jonas' first mission, and he got his heroic moments, but all four members of the team had a vital role to play. I think that this is very important.

I love the glider escape, and Jack's line about all members of SG-1 being present and accounted for was sweet.

Another Excellent.
