Subdividing the 'Characters and Relationships' board

Would it be at all possible to divide up the C&R board any? It would be really nice to be able to discuss Teal'c depth, Carter's background, Daniel's ascension--without having to sift through those piles and piles of godforsaken "ship," "thunk," "whump" (wtf does that mean anyway?) threads. I seem to be in the minority in thinking that they're a colossal waste of space and time, but even still it would be nice if there were a board where it were possible to discuss the ins and outs of our characters without having to sift through piles of lovestruck or drooling threads.

It wouldn't even be that hard either, a "Shippers Board," a "Thunk Board," etc.

Just a suggestion, which I would personally find very beneficial to browsing the boards.

Hi. I have a question for you...have you ever thought to make at least one reply in each of these threads you read? then, you can subscribe to them, and never have to sift through the muck and mire again. they will always be under your contol panel, with the last post just being a click away! Just food for thought. that's what I did and no more wading through stuff again.!

That's actually a really good idea.

The only problem with that is that I'm sure most people wouldn't even think of it (I certainly didn't) so the number of people to converse with on other issues would be fairly limited.

I think the chances of that are pretty remote - for the present. That decision is entirely up to Darren, but keep in mind it hasn't been that long since the "Characters and Relationships" folder was created. Who remembers the horrible old days when it was all in amongst the Gen Disc!

sub dividing the forum is darren's call.

for the time being, subscribing to your favored threads might be the best

again, you might be pleasantly suprised just how many people do this...it is a sure fire way to keep up on your favorite threads...some of these threads are huge...so many long timers here can tell you that is the easiest way...and huge threads mean that ALOT of people are conversing!

I remember, it wasn't horrible, but this is better.

Topically I'd say that "Daniel is a babe" and "Daniel's ascended history" would both fit into any folder labelled "Characters." It would be difficult to further separate the thunk / appreciation / ship threads without resorting to calling a sub-folder "Character Thunking" ... which I'm not inclined to do.

The 'Characters and Relationships' folder was actually created for just this purpose -- to get the "fluffier" character love fest threads out of General Discussion and into their own home. A more "serious" discussion of a particular aspect of a character could fit there, but I also wouldn't mind it being in General Discussion.

I was only thinking about this the other day. I wondered why we have characters with relationships in one forum section? I can quite happily Thunk for the character without worrying about the shipps. I see where someone might not like the character appreciation within a Thunk/Shipp section of the forum. Why not have three separate forums (sections) for them? Space? Too much hassle to change them?

                      Why not have:

                      Thunk section:
                      Relationship section:
                      Appreciation section:

You know Darren there are some Titles that have Appreciation and Thunk within them, I can't imagine how bad that is for someone who appreciates the character but not in that way.

Zelenka comes to mind here, his character Thunk is within the appreciation thread. Not to mention some posters blur the line on what is appropriate to post in a thread because they are all smushed together in one forum section.

So you think there should be separate sections for thunking, shipping, and discussion? And what about a separate section for the anti-ship threads and another section for the anti-character threads? That way the people who LIKE the ships/characters don't have to worry about seeing all that obnoxious negativity.

Once you start subdividing, it never ends. And as Darren has said, how do you classify the threads that fit into multiple sections? The Lorne thunk thread may spend a lot of time ogling pics of Lorne/Kavan, but it also has a lot of honest discussion about the character. And creating a separate "Lorne discussion thread" wouldn't necessarily stop some from having a "real" conversation about the character in the thunk thread. After all, it's part and parcel of the ogling, it's just going into greater detail about WHY he's so great, or which scenes were particularly juicy and what more folks want to see. Should they be forcefully weeded out and all future attempts summarily deleted as being "off topic"? And does that also mean that in the discussion thread people aren't allowed to talk about how hot he is, or how he looked really great in episode X or point out another example of "tongue porn"? Where do you (generally speaking) draw the line? And who's to say that where YOU draw the line is right for everyone?

And pray how many anit-shipp threads in the relationship section have you started? I've seen them, I do not shipp, at best I slash for McKay/Sheppard but not seriously enough to be offended by an anti-thread if it was to be included with the pro-shipp threads. Sensible thought is what is needed not negative reaction to an idea.

It seems that the Appreciation/discussions are full of female posters why? I think some male posters might appreciate the characters but are too, um put off by the fangirl reactions...I don't care about the anti threads they are mostly for stirring up anyway and I would rather avoid that thanks, but the shipp threads are many, many and the ones related to them are many, of course it might just be that the forum section has to be tidied up a bit.

If you'll notice the female appreciation (and even wow) threads are crowded with females to. Strange.

I simply think that trying to segregate the character/ship threads and strictly regulate them to disallow crossover is asking for at LEAST as much trouble as any anti thread could generate.
