I voted for Window of Opportunity because I think it's the funniest Stargate episode yet and well...I really don't think that I need to elaborate.

Anyone who knows me knows which one I voted for here - Scorched Earth!

This is my absolute, all time, no doubts about it, favourite Stargate episode.

It is Stargate, and indeed Sci Fi as a genre, at its best. For me, sci fi is for exploring ourselves, humanity, by using situations that are very out of the ordinary. For me this episode wasn't about who was right - daniel or Jack. It was about the fact that there was no right answer and no wrong answer. There was only the two ways of looking at the situation, and what that says about us and humanities way of looking at the universe.

The rational, logical, answer: go with the Gadmeerians. At stake here was an entire species, their civilisation, culture, history, etc. These people's only way of saving themselves was to put themselves into 'freeze dried' storage and set off in the hope they'd find somewhere to start again. It wasn't their fault that the Enkarans were on the planet - they started terraforming before they arrived. The Gadmeerans freeze dried on the ship had no other choice left.

Whereas the future of all Enkarans wasn't at stake here. This was just a group who'd been taken off their world by the Goa'uld. Somewhere out there was a planet of Enkarans. Plus they had options - they could leave the planet. Maybe they didn't have anywhere else to go, but then again maybe they could find another place. It wasn't going to definitely be the end of them. There was still hope.

The emotional, subjective answer: What would the Gadmeerians know? They were freeze dried, ancient specimens. Their time was over - the universe had already voted against them. And what did we know about them? Nothing, except that they weren't humanoid and saw and heard the world differently from us. We didn't know if they laughed, or cried, or had emotions, or families or anything else. They could have been evil, or they could have been good. The point is we didn't know them.

Whereas we did know the Enkarans. We knew how they felt because we feel the same way. We had an emotional attachement to them, and could empathise - we know how we'd feel in their place.

And the right answer? Well, if they hadn't found the alternative, and I personally had to make the choice, then it would be with the Enkarans for all the reasons I've said above.

Plus, Daniel looks so utterly thunkable in that long shot of him walking in the grove with Lotan, and the way that uniform outlines those thighs I swear it is the closest to pornography you can get on a PG show...

I just knew it would get down to the grove scene in the end... and while I like that ep a lot, especially because there were essentially two right answers and two wrong answers to the same question.

My favourite ep on a superficial level is Chain Reaction. I wonder why that might be? Then there is Window of Opportunity: the Ep Which Sucked Me In. Then there is Absolute Power... but I have to say, I think The Other Side is the most thought provoking, although in a way it is a similar situation to Scorched Earth.

Man... decisions decisions.

I voted for Window of Opportunity because I think it's the funniest Stargate episode yet and well...I really don't think that I need to elaborate.

Damn right, i must have watched this episode more times than the rest of the season together, it has everything. Golfing through the stargate, the juggling scene, Teal'c getting his own back on the guy that keeps hitting him with the door. Aside from humor it's great too. If ur a sam/jack shipper u have to be happy with the kiss and knowing look he gives her at the end. Man, even the special effects are pretty cool.

I voted for WoO because I just love that they could take the episode from light and funny to poignant and intense. It's truely a great episode. :)

My favourite: Prodigy.
I liked the idea of ongoing training and induction into the SGC.

I liked Cadet Hailey, as she may have had a rebellious streak, but IMO,she had a lot of potential for future involvement and the "Smarts" to realise the possibilities Carter showed her regarding the SGC.

I liked the chemistry/rivalry between Carter and Hailey, and enjoyed the exchange about the fight between Hailey and the other Cadet.

Carter:"What were you thinking?"
Hailey: "Swing High?" :D

Major Clanger
May 9th, 2004, 02:37 AM
Really, you like Hailey?

For me, one of the best things about Stargate is how realistic the characters are. Not just as people, but, for example, part of the Military Machine. However there are two notable exceptions.

One was the Colonel in... ah, was it Enemy Mine? in S7. He was so cliché it was impossible (and remains impossible) for me to watch that ep and keep my blood pressure under control.

The other is Hailey. She would almost certainly find herself being at least punched on the nose, and otherwise edged (carefully) out of everything, by the other cadets. Unfair? Possibly. Realisitc? You bet.

She most certainly is not a team player, and that is one of the crucial aspects of being in the military. It's not about blindly following orders, and certainly not about stifling creative thought - even though the expression "team work" sounds as though it is. It is about taking the other members of your team into consideration, listening to them (and the voice of experience) and if you know for a fact that you are right and they are wrong, there are ways of convincing people of that - and most certainly not doing the "told you so" at the end.

ah... Hailey is a "rant issue" for me. Sorry!

Bagpuss
May 9th, 2004, 03:44 AM
There, there,MC. Didn't intend to set you off!
I agree with you about the Woodentop Officer in Enemy Mine as I really loathed his attitude!(Loathe my memory too as I can't recall his name.)

I know you don't like Hailey for various reasons, but do you think she redeemed herself a fair bit in "Proving Ground"?

Have to say,Hubby said a lot worse than you about Hailey! His first words as I recall were "So now they're inducting Wabbits?"Then his POV got rapidly stronger...we had to declare a truce to calm things down...

For me,I thought Hailey was a typical loner too with an a chip on her shoulder the size of Idaho(The State ,not the Potato!).

Carter had to slap down her questioning O'Neill's decision to risk his own life,by doing a solo run to get the Stargate open.An example of what you mean, or a rash attitude until she realised it didn't actually matter who was "Right"?

Respect to the Clanger! I'm not trying to goad, just nosey as usual. :D

I would have to go for Window of Opportunity, closely followed by Tangent, 2010 and Upgrades.

Upgrades is a significant episode for me because it's the episode were I first discovered how great Stargate SG-1 had become after not watching it for a few years because I wasn't impressed by Season 1.

LoneStar1836
May 27th, 2004, 11:58 PM
If I can only pick one, it would of course be Window of Opportunity. Endless re-watchability (Is that a word?), but Upgrades is a very close 2nd. If you follow NASCAR, it's as close as the 1st Darlington race last year when Craven edged out Kurt Busch in one of the most exciting race finishes. If you don't, then trust me, it was a close finish.

As a core story episode, I really like Absolute Power for the way they handled the conclusion of the Harcesis storyline. Can't overlook The Other Side for the interesting moral struggle faced by SG-1 and the choice Jack makes at the end which almost mirrors another choice he makes in one of my favorite Season 6 eps.

Window of Opportunity

This is the ep that made me a fan. I could watch it over and over and never get tired of it. Humor, ship, and angst rolled into one extremely entertaining package. Does it get any better than that?

I love this season! So many wonderful episodes. The whole steak thing in Upgrades tickles me every time. WoW is classic fun. Beneath the Surface - the team cares about what happens to each other even when they can't remember who they are. Tangent: "Carter, I can see my house!" And even though a lot of folks seem to dislike Hailey, I find her very engaging in Prodigy.

I'm for Window of Opportunity too... shows the show's comedic talent but dealt with some serious issues too. That was a real gem, seeing Teal'c juggle and all... and the whole golfing sequence... my favorite moment though is when O'Neill went WHACKO!!! That part had me spitting out my drink and howling in laughter.

Many really good episodes, but I don't have to think long to say WoO.

This was the first episode I ever downloaded from the internet, then I couldn't wait to watch it on television in high-quality so I went to the video store to rent the video (see, they would never have got my money if I hadn't downloaded it first  ), it was the episode that got me starting to tape all other SG eps, it was on the first DVD I bought, and it will probably be my all time favorite. :D

Tough decision... there were many great episodes:
Small Victories and Exodus were great episodes to start and end the season.
Window of Opportunity and Upgrades were great comedy. WoO was just fun to watch and re-watch over and over again. I love Hammond in Upgrades.
The Other Side and Scorched Earth have both great serious storylines and also really bring out the antagonistic relation between Jack and Daniel.
The Curse was a good mythological episode and Tangent, Watergate, The Serpent's Venom and 2010 were also great episodes.
Season 4 is probably my favourite season and it's hard to pick one episode but in the end my vote goes to WoO.

EXACTLY! Someone who understands me ;)

It happens every time though. Anything faux Egyptian, from Stargate to Mummies Alive! has the old heart-in-a-jar. I suppose it wouldn't be the same, though.

"Sir, you watch. The scan will reveal that that unopened jar contains the mummified lungs of a 3000 year old pharaoh, and we're just handing it over."

Somehow 'lungs' lacks that extra zip you only get with hearts.

Madeleine
June 12th, 2004, 10:02 PM
Quite. Hearts have that... heartness about them.

The Evil Queen: "Bring me the lungs of Snow White"

Doesn't have the same impact, does it?

Anyway, The Curse was a totally super ep, and it had Daniel in a suit *and* in a white shirt and a neckerchief looking very dishy indeed. Erm, am I in the wrong thread?

Season 4 of Stargate is my favorite season out of all of them, it had a lot of my favorite episodes in it. But choosing my favorite episode was a no-brainer, Window of Opportunity. If anything, for this line:

Jack: But what about Teal'c? C'mon, is this the face of a crazy man? (looks over at Teal'c) ...Bad example...

That line always makes me laugh.

Upgrades would have been my second choice followed by 2010.

I hated Season 4 until The First Ones finally came along and saved me from depression. I'm a total Daniel/Chaka shipper and this is the episode that establishes their relationship. Well this just wasn't hard, even though there are so many good episodes in season 4. WoO is just pure class. You can watch it over and over and never stop lovingit, even if you're not a shipper. Its funny, irritating and I defy anyone who doesn't smile when they think about the golf scene. I love it soo much.

It seems to be a bit of a one horse race in terms of votes, which makes me kinda think about Scorched Earth. I love that episode purely for Daniel and his humanity. (for want of a better word) Lotan was a good character as well and I thought the whole episode flowed really well.

But in the end I voted for WoO, because it makes me laugh at too many scenes to mention, shout hooray when Jack kisses Sam right under Hammond's nose, and question whoever invented plus fours.

Let's face it - the guy who wrote Space Race and Prometheus Unbound needs to take a lesson from the folks who wrote WoO, because there is no contest that it is not only the funniest episode of the series (SR and PU weren't funny at all) but, on top of that, it is one of the best episodes of the whole series.

Wow, this was a hard poll to decide on. Makes me wish I could change my vote for "Favorite Season," because this season had so many terrific episodes.

I ended up voting for "Absolute Power," because I think that episode was not only a vital part of the Daniel's evolution, but it also had a lot to say about human nature, and it said it very well and very effectively. It was wonderfully written, wonderfully directed, and wonderfully acted.

But it was a very hard choice. Runners up:
- Small Victories (very exciting, although not quite as exciting as Nemesis)
- The Other Side (another wonderfully written and acted ep. Love moral dilemmas)
- Window of Opportunity (funniest ep of the entire series. Great directing in this one)
- The First Ones (good Daniel ep and good team ep - shows what the team means to each other and shows the kind of person Daniel is)
- Scorched Earth (terrific moral dilemma with no right or wrong answers. Good Jack/Daniel development)
- Tangent (some really good Jack development)
- The Curse (really good Daniel development. Also loved watching Teal'c fishing)
- The Serpent's Venom (very exciting)
- 2010 (I really enjoyed this ep. What is it about knowing exactly who the bad guys are, when the characters don't, that makes these eps so suspenseful?)
- Exodus ("This is the sun." "OK..." "We want to blow it up." "Wow. That's, uh... ambitious." Also, some great Teal'c development and Jack/Teal'c interaction)

So many... And the thing is, the ones I didn't list weren't all that bad, either.

I´m not a big "Windows of Opportunity" fan but I must admit it had some very funny moments...I have no idea why the Stargate writers are not any longer able to do such kind of episodes...Seems that they have forgotten what humour is...

My favourite episodes from season 4 are: "Serpent´s Venom", "Exodus", "Double Jeoparty" and "The Light"...I know that is maybe not such a popular choice but "The Light" is my favourite season 4 episode.

I voted with the majority here for Window of Opportunity which is my favourite episode from any series. But it was a tough choice as many of my favourite episodes are in this particular series - Upgrades, 2010, Watergate, Beneath the Earth, The Light, Absolute Power.

But the combination of humour and sadness in this one and the fact that there was no "evil bad guy" so to speak really makes it my favourite over all.

I also voted with the majority here, though I also liked Upgrades, Tangent and Scorched Earth from this series...

I chose Double Jeopardy. Window of opportunity is fun but not the best episode IMO... :)

While I'm not usually a big fan of comedy, either movies or television, every so often I need it, and Window of Opportunity is Stargate comedy at its best.

This was a tough one for me, as there are several excellent episodes (and then some really mediocre ones).

In the end I decided on Upgrades, because the idea of having super powers has always thrilled me, and I took great intellectual pleasure in SG1 being able to read at lightning speeds, and Sam being able to write an entire book. Of course, the fact that they were all incredibly strong and fast was awesome too. In addition to this, the episode had a lot of good humour -- the restaurant scene, Jack's eagerness, etc. AND there was a little bit of ship -- what more could I possibly want?

Window of Opportunity was a very, very, very close second for me. It is true comedic gold, the best I've seen so far in the series. It had ship. It had new technology and an alien. It had moral issues. However, even though I know it was the point, I found the time looping too annoying/frustrating to pick this ep above Upgrades.

I also really enjoyed Divide and Conquer. The Tokra are always interesting, and I'll never forget the scene where Freya hits on Jack, and then Jack's conversation with Daniel about it later:

Jack: 'So she came onto me.'
Daniel, looking puzzled: 'Sam?!?!?'
Jack: 'No, Freya. Anise. Whatever. But apparently the snake likes you.'

(paraphrased as I do not have a perfect memory)

Of course D&C is also a shipper's wetdream of an episode, and I must say I squeed a bit.

Lastly, I adored Absolute Power. As I've said before, I love a power-crazed Daniel. MS always does such an amazing job, but he really did his best this time. Evil Daniel is also incredibly hot. And there was cool technology.

I loved so many episodes in this season. Mainly for the ship - Divide and Conquer, Window of Opportunity, Beneath the Surface, Entity etc...

I, however, went with the majority and voted for Window of Opportunity. It was just too darn funny and it had ship... can't really ask for more in my opinion. ;)

This season might be one of the harder to choose which one is best. You have a hilarious one with WoO. Yet Double Jeopardy and Exodus were great as well. I eventually voted for Exodus. They should make 2 parters 1 vote.

Window of opportunity is hilarious!

Window Of Oppertunity is great! Soo funny. Out of shear boredem one day, I desided to memorize the episode. I almost have it all down. That and Abyss, but that is the wrong season...

WOO has some great shippy moments that even I can enjoy...that kiss was just CLASSIC!!!

This one is a no brainer....Window of Opportunity. There are so many funny moments, the whole episode is just fantastic. I could not even name one part I like better than the others, except maybe when Jack takes a loop off, and rides his bike down corridors, resigns and then gives Sam a kiss that made me knees go weak in the!!!!

Aw...man! That was hard. Too many good episodes to choose from.

I mean.....

Window of Opportunity
Absolute Power
The Curse
The Light
Beneath the Surface
The First Ones

As much as I think Window of Opportunity is like the funniest SG-1 ep ever. I voted for Absolute Power. Not only did Michael Shanks did an amazing job of making Daniel go evil. But...it was fun seeing the characters out of character sort of speak. Plus....I liked seeing Daniel and Shifu reunite. It was kinda like that last chapter of the whole Sha're story.

I picked The Curse. It reminds me of those old movies I used to watch on Sunday afternoons. Plus, I love Osiris!

I voted for "The First Ones." It's a nice adventure/off-world episode. I like that they actually explore the Unas as an alien culture, even if only a little bit.

And for a Daniel-centric episode, I think it did a good job of balancing the plot lines and characters so that everyone had some nice moments. I love when Teal'c ties everyone up because they might be Goa'uld.
Jack: What if I'm not O'Neill?
Teal'c: Then I was not talking to you.

I also like Rothman, he added some nice moments ("I'm not good with people. They're too recent").

I chose 'The First Ones'. Daniel's attempts to communicate with Chaka, and their eventual understanding are just marvelous. And the game of 'toss the symbiote head'! A fantastic episode.

While most people would choose 'Window of Opportunity', and it is a wonderful blend of comedy and pathos, that wasn't one of the ones I had difficulty choosing between. My favorites this season would be 'The First Ones', 'Absolute Power', and 'Beneath The Surface', followed by 'Scorched Earth' and 'The Other Side'.

I love 'The Curse', but at some point you have to stop listing episodes, or you find yourself choosing them all! ;) One thing about these polls, they really remind you of just how great, overall, this series was.

Season 4 is both my favourite season (along with s6) and the best season IMO (again along with s6 :)). I love all episodes here, with no exception.
However, my very favourite is Beneath the Surface. It's very different from your standard SG-1 episode and allows us to see our heroes in a completely different light. See their personalities without all the rules holding them in place. Plus it's wonderfully acted. :)

Runners-up are: 2010, Chain Reaction (for some bizzare reason I love this episode), Exodus, WoO, The Light, Double Jeopardy..

I'm on S4 right now...I picked 2010. Unlike seems like nearly every other person in the fandom, I didn't love Window of Opportunity. It had some funny bits, but for the most part, apart from the fun slapstick humor, it wasn't that good. 2010 felt like a really good episode of The Outer Limits, and no wonder, considering Brad Wright (writer and producer on TOL) was responsible for it. It was different, it was interesting, it had a real speculative-fiction feel different from the usual Stargate vibe and an ominous, parable-like quality.

Runners up are Scorched Earth (the moral questions), Beneath the Surface (another totally different scenario), and The First Ones (um, Daniel being tied up and really attractively dragged around by a scary monster :o). Great eps all. Unfortunately, a lot of otherwise good S4 eps were occasionally but annoyingly tainted for me by the introduction and persistent bringing-up of the S/J ship. Unnecessary and not a positive thing for the great team dynamic from the seasons previous. But still, some good stories in there.

Well, for me, this was the best season out of all of them. There was only one episode that I was less keen on and that was "Prodigy". All the others were great...my BF and I watched it in one weekend cuz we were just addicted :D

Hard choice, but I voted for Small Victories. :) Wow - I'm surprised it got so few votes, although I'm not surprised that so many voted for WoO. I enjoyed that episode, but Small Victories was awesome, especially Sam and Thor working together to defeat the replicators. :D
