Wouldn't you be best served by listening to how male Wraith talk on the show? I'm not sure how telling you what they sound like will help.

Hoarse, menacing, probably using a voice distorting device of some kind.

Just listen to some Wraiths speak.

Yes, watching them would be best. Unfortunately I have only seen episodes without wraiths, or have just seen clips with the female wraiths or males with no actual lines. But a friend just drummed up a copy of an episode with the male wraiths talking so I'll check it out tonight. Thanks.

So far the wraith speak very little. The females
that have spoken tend to have what i would call
low, sultry voices. the men have always been deeper.
all voices are run through a synthesizer of some
sort because the have a multi-tonal quality.
all men sound harsh and snarly.

the wraith are tough and defiant if that tells
you anything. and have contempt for humans.

good luck! how exciting. i would love to be a wraith
anything. do tell us how you do.

The voice reflects the character - Wraith in general are confident, menacing, and ill-tempered (read: deep, and kinda snarly), with a serious superiority complex (especially when dealing with humans), so that's a foundation to build on. The specifics will depend on the individual character and his motivations/situation - is he defiant, angry, manipulative, smug, suspicious etc etc? With any luck, if the sides don't give any indication, the casting director should be able to provide an overview of what the character is like.

You are so lucky. It's an audition to appear in an upcoming Atlantis episode as a wraith? Cool!

The voice thing with the wraith is a post production add-on. The actor speaks his lines like he normally would. Then the sound engineers modify the actors voices using sound editing software, then dub the new voice track into the video. Although i'm sure with enough practice, someone could certainly achieve the sound of the wraith voice. The best thing to do while preparing is to get an idea of the character your auditioning for. "Commander-type" wraiths (Think "Steve") behave differently than say the mask-wearing warriors (No-Faces) or the the specialist types (think "Bob" from the siege).

It has been my limited experience, that when auditioning for a part, some background and what is expected from the actor is usually provided by whoever is doing the auditioning, esp. in the case of characters that already have an audience, so I wouldn't worry.

                      Good luck!
