Great start for David Tennant as the Doctor.

I really liked this episode, it had a great storyline and ending. Plus the music really stood out to me.

Super enjoyable, but somewhat padded story. Tennant is super as the Doctor, and I can't wait to see where he takes it. From the minute he wakes up, he just IS the Doctor. Can't complain. Really can't. Sad about Harriet's turn, but it was fantastic seeing her again anyway. And UNIT! Back in force!!! Oh, this has been a long time coming, this new Doctor Who, and it's only just hitting its stride.

This is the Doctor... it is supposed to be cheesy... :P

David Tennant is wonderful as the doctor... I didn't think he could pull it off but he really resonates with me. Troughton, Baker and bits of Davison rolled into one...

I was looking at http://www.drwho-online.co.uk/ and in the upcoming releases it stated that the DVD for series 2 volume 1 will have the christmas invasion and new earth on it. So this means that The Christmas Invasion is officially a series 2 episode. This therefore means that eventually this thread will need to be moved...

Yep, the production code for TCI is 2.X, which under the format being used here means the title should be

The Christmas Invasion (28X)

^can be sorted next week when we get the new folder up.

As I said in the other thread I thought this was awesome, David's doctor had some fantastic moments already, especially his "it is defended" and his whole rant at Hariet at the end where done to perfection. Cant wait to see more.

Personal favourite bit: "No second chances", showed the contrast between fun loving and ruthlessness that both reside in this Doctor.

I'll let Darren know as soon as New Earth shows (1 week yay!)

Madeleine

We're labelling New Earth 28.1. It may not be strictly correct, but it's probably less confusing.

We could label Christmas Invasion 28.0 though, and fit it into the s28 folder.

The Signal
April 16th, 2006, 04:34 AM
Probably should be moved now, it is officially S28 so its up to a mod or Darren to decide whether t relabel it or keep it as it is.

I was originally a bit nervous. This is my first change of the Doctor; however, it was wondeful. DT did a wonderful job, and I can't complain about the episode itself.

My only rant is the number of commercials on SciFi is ridiculous. The episode dragged only because the commercial breaks were sometimes longer than the episode clips.

I almost fell asleep during a couple of those commercial breaks.

Did Skiffy snip stuff out of the ep? I don't remember anything SPECIFIC missing, but I'm not good at noticing stuff like that.

They used an hour and a half to air it, so I doubt that they snipped much of anything. Good intro to Torchwood at the end and lecture to Harriet - murderer. Loved the hand regeneration...had to think of LUKE - I am your father...hehehe...Glad to see Rose's mum has a friend, even if he keeps pieces of fruit in his dressing gown pocket. Absolutely LOVE the new Doctor. He's charming, and sarcastic, and snarky and - wait a minute...has he been taking lessons from ShadowMaat???

No cuts in either episode last night. In fact, they had to throw in extra commercials during the Christmas Invasion just to make it long enough for that 90 minutes.

It was great
On the comercials................................................
If they don't stop filling space with comercial They will lose their audienceran to the bathroom after 3 commercials already passed, raced back down with a bum (achy sore) knee only to watch --- more commercials!! we noticed that too!

Unfortunately, The Christmas Invasion was too long for a standard USA 60 minute program, but too short for a full 90 minute one, too.

It didn't help that the phone rang 2 minutes before the show began and rang again in the middle!!

But the Doctor's "did you miss me?" line was classic! :D
So was Rose's mum yelling in the beginning, "doctor?? doctor Who?!"

it's *good* to have him back... and yes, we *missed* him!! (the character...) :(
it was a fairly good intro at regeneration, too. Loved the haunting Tardis "whooOOooo" music theme coming out whenever he breathed out those energy bursts... I had wondered if that was still part of the Tardis in him, but apparently it wasn't.

...and even tho I cheated months ago in reading some of this topic already spoiling me - I forgot most of the details, so I wasn't so spoiled on gabbing what might happen thruout the ep... I was too busy watching and enjoying it *in* the moment! :)

what i don't get is if the UK had that massive death ray then why did they wait near the end to shoot it and not shoot it when it was most needed

you'd also think the other nations would be upset that the UK was gambling with the fate of the entire planet, and how dare the prime minister say she's the leader of Earth, she should be impeached, or whatever you call it

They needed to get it ready. They stated that quite explicitly many times in the episode. It wasn't functional until near the end.

I agree. Tennant's "It is defended" delivery was quite effective, making a neat dramatic leap from his irreverent manner. Couldn't help thinking what a cool line that would be to say to the Ori when earth kicks their tails...Oh, wait. ;) And the "no second chances" was priceless.

Very impressed with The Doctor's reaction to the PM's order. I loved the spoof on the all healing effectiveness of a good cuppa English tea! Tennant fits right in the Dr. Who universe and adds his own touch to the mix.

Just sayin', I think I'll stick with SciFi Friday for The Doctor, see where he takes the show. I'm hoping the upcoming cast change won't challenge the series too heavily. Great beginning second season entry, and I hope the next episodes are as enjoyable.

The episode in general was a little slow, but it was the wait to see David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor - he's great in the role. :)
Everyone on Earth are panicking because Aliens are trying to takeover, but as soon as the Doctor turns up he takes ten minutes and the world is saved. The episode introduced the continuous sign of the season like last seasons 'Bad Wolf', this time it's the acronym 'Torchwood'.

You remember how, in the The Christmas Invasion, a Mars probe goes missing right before Christmas, leading in to an actual alien invasion on Christmas day? Well, it's a few weeks early, but...

Mars Global Surveyor (http://www.livescience.com/blogs/2006/11/27/mars-global-surveyor-mums-the-word/) has gone missing. Despite their best efforts to contact it, NASA has heard no peep from Mars Global Surveyor in more than two weeks. The rover Spirit and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have tried and failed, and in fact, the latter tried to actually view the MGS, and seems to have found what may be debris.

Just to let you know, the Sycorax may show up earlier than expected in this universe.

This is by far my favorite episode! I mean the whole scene on the ship was SO incredible. I liked the show alot before this ep but this is what made it number one! David Tennant is awesome!

My favorite line was when he quotes the lion king by mistake =)

I must admit that this show has some spell over me... At the end of Doomsday I actually cried! (for people that don't know me I have never cried when watching TV since I was a little kid).

Can't wait for series 4... Hope it isn't the last for DT!

I think it's some jerk trying to mess with peoples heads. Or someone who can't tell the difference between rumor and fact.

And here's what Steven Moffat had to say about the Sun's casting rumor:

The James Nesbitt story is a total fabrication. Made up. A fantasy. Just a guy sitting at a desk and just inventing stuff.

I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm getting embarrassed for the deeply wonderful Jimmy Nesbitt. So tell everyone please, cos it's getting very silly.

Steven Moffat

Thanks to Outpost Gallifrey (http://www.gallifreyone.com/news.php?id=seriesnews) for passing that along.

Yeah this is amongst the episodes I liked this series....

Loved the banter between the Doc and the Sycorax leader about the "big red button" That was gold.

What did bug me was the end... How did those six words "Don't you think she looks tired" bring down the PM?

It was loud enough we heard it so surely Harriet heard it too?

Coco Pops

Howcome when the Sycorax made contact via the space probe it was the UK's mission but the americans wanted to take over. Howcome, and not having a go but do people really think the americans are like that?

Or are they really like that in the real world?

Indeed, and that Children in Need special was great; it contained that heartbreaking line...

Rose: "Can you change back?"

Four words.

That's probably my favorite Rose scene. Of course, this being Doctor Who, Rose is over it by "New Earth" (in fact she's practically jumping up and down with glee at the beginning of that episode). I loved the beats of uneasiness about the new Doctor in the CiN special and "The Christmas Invasion".

Rewatched this today, its my first time re-watching it as I originally saw this back in January of 2009(I watched all four seasons of Doctor Who that same month for the first time, thank you Netflix!). I loved it! But the portrayal of Ten seemed slightly different than how he appears later on....but it was so slight that it isn't much of a difference. The evil attacking Christmas Tree was just plain silly! :p

Did they say it there already? I only noticed it on the later episode. Well have to rewach it sometime.

Anyway, even though I had a bit of trouble to get used to David a first (what didn't take more then 2 Episodes max.) there are two of my most favorite ever lines in this ep.

First the Lion King quote of course and, whats more importend. the refernece to Aurthur Dent (I had to rewind this bit a few times to be sure he realy said it) since I am a huge Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxie fan. (well with doctor who as new passion in addition I might have to think again, before I say I usualy don't like SiFi, again ;-))
