`Stargate' Spins Off `Atlantis'

The premiere of the new season of "Stargate SG-1" (Sci Fi, 7 p.m.) last week averaged 3.2 million viewers, the biggest audience in the series history.
It bodes well for tonight's two-hour introduction of its first spinoff, "Stargate Atlantis" (Sci Fi, 9 and 11 p.m.).
Many of the same special effects come into play, the magical Stargate is still there and so are some of the same characters.
Casual Friday channel surfers may find "Stargate Atlantis" indistinguishable from "Stargate SG-1," which makes some sense because of a partially shared cast and shared team of writers. For fans, it should mean two chances to indulge in the show.
