Paramount Domestic Television's digital remastering of the original Star Trek led the pack, according to the latest Nielsen weekly ratings report for the week ending Oct. 8 [2006]. Paramount returned the series to the syndication rotation after giving it a digital facelift to make it more viewer-friendly to a generation weaned on computer graphics.

Trek's 1.2 topped Stargate: Atlantis at a 1.1; Stargate SG-1 with a 1.0; and Outer Limits at a .4. It also beat the off-Si Fi Channel Farscape at a .8, though that show is classified as a general drama rather than sci-fi.

 I think I need to pray that TOS DVD box sets come on sale real cheap before these... THINGS... of remastering turn into DVD box sets and are the only things left. How in the world is better SFX suppose to look good next to the other cheesy stuff in the show? :D I guess I'll find out for myself eventually. Though I don't know why they'd mess with Perfection.

because, unfortunately, there is a segment of viewers for whom spx are the only reason they watch shows. they like hte fact that Lucas messed with the original Star Wars films and put in more spx. Never mind it was the stories and characters that draw in viewers as well. I've seen some photos of the changes and well, blech. Sorry, it's going to be a mess of new CGI crud with the 'cheesy' stuff ;) and in looking up this new and improved (snort) show, well, 3 a.m.? Guess I won't be bothering with it.

Messing with Star Wars is a big No-No in our house. Hubby's a hugh fan and has the real ones on tape. Though our son is kind of wearing them down now! May have to get theDVD sets of the original for Christmas.
3am? Okay. Spend all that money and it gets a time slot of that? I can't even get it anyway because of my lovely basic cable.
I like speical effects. I also like classic sci fi. And it shouldn't be messed with! I recently was able to get the real War of the Worlds. My son is only 6 and it scared the pants off of him! And it's even in GASP black and white.

I never bought these "remastered and improved" Star Wars films. I love the old, original versions too much to do that.

You may already know this, but the episode airing in syndication in for SG-1 is from S9 and for SGA is S2. Around here, they show on Saturday afternoons usually before or after a sporting event (baseball currently). For the week listed in those ratings the ep was "Off the Grid" for SG-1 and "The Long Goodbye" for SGA.

Sci fi's way hot,
except in syndication

Ratings for longstanding series take a tumble

Household ratings for the Superman-as-a-teenager drama “Smallville,” for example, are down 17 percent season to date through last month compared with last year, from a 1.8 to a 1.5 rating, according to Nielsen data analyzed by Katz TV. “Stargate: SG-1,” a Sci Fi Channel drama, has slipped 25 percent, from a 1.6 to a 1.2, while spinoff “Stargate: Atlantis” has fallen 14 percent, from a 1.4 to a 1.2.

There are any number of explanations for the slides, including the fact that "Smallville" and "SG-1" are aging shows that have been around for a while, while "Farscape" and "Atlantis" may have simply experienced strong first years; both are now in their second syndie seasons.

Plus, ratings for a number of syndicated shows are down year to year, including many talk and game shows.

But another reason for the slides may be that while hardcore sci fi fans continue to watch the syndicated shows, casual sci fi fans are increasingly getting their fix through primetime dramas rather than old repeats.

Indeed, ratings declines for the shows were steeper among women 18-49 and 25-54 than among men 18-34 and 18-49, sci fi’s core audience.

Also behind the decline is a dropoff in the number of stations choosing to air syndicated sci fi series, perhaps in response to the increase in such shows on broadcast.

“SG-1’s” coverage slipped from 97 percent in 2005-’06 to 92 percent this season, while “Atlantis” and “Smallville” were down by one percentage point apiece.

Ratings Review: BARB Week Ending 02 September 2007

The first set of ratings for the new Autumn season have been released by BARB and it makes for interesting reading.

**snippage**

On a related point, the top 10s of the same three channels bear investigation too. Sky One's is very notable, all 10 slots are held by The Simpsons, but all only scoring ratings of around 300-450 thousand viewers. For Sky Two, the picture is similar, with Stargate Atlantis holding 7 of the top 10 posts, and ratings in the top 10 ranging from 89-125 thousand viewers...

Is anyone surprised that the episodes are getting horrible ratings? Let's look what time of night they are airing:

3:00 AM
4:00 AM or sometimes 4:37 AM

I am a huge and hardcore fan and even that is too late for me to stay up and watch them. Plus, since this is a sports season, there's always the delays from that.

I just saw this on the front page. I used to regularly watch the reruns if I was home on Saturday and nothing was going on. They were on a good time of day (2:00 and 3:00). But now they've moved channels and I have no idea when they're even on any more. It sucks.

What does it matter really when or how you watch Stargate unless you have one of the rating boxes at your house it makes no difference they never knew you watched it live, or on the net.

But how a series performs in syndication is a big money maker for everyone. Because that results in residual payments, etc. If a series does not do well in syndication, it may (MAY) have an impact on whether or not it is renewed for another new season.

Syndication is cool, but the ratings might also be reflected on how it's being aired too. I advertise during the syndicated Stargate shows and the show times are horrible right now (after midnight on Sunday). Sports taking first priority in the time slots they usually ran.

The time that the Syndicated episodes are on wouldn't be bad, if they were on at a regular time. On the station I watch they keep switching the time, and our tv guide doesn't always show the changes.

Nah, I am doing ok. It just goes back to the new season ratings of SGA. I don't know what is good or bad neither does anyone else except for the networks. I think Syndication is different, since they are well basically reruns. So a 0.6 or 0.7 might still be profitable to the networks. If you look at that list, no one is exactly ripping apart the competition. :S

You just sounded as if you'd lost your best friend. :( I'll be honest I have no clue either. I keep comparing the ratings to what they were last year, and with the figures that low I do get concerned even though I know we have a S5. I guess if everyone has figures similar then something else must be going on. What I don't get if i've heard correctly is that it's being shown in the early hours of the morning and they keep switching times. When that happens it's no wonder the figures are low. I'd keep forgetting when SGA was on if Sky kept doing that, and i'd probably keep missing the eps to. If that's what's been happening. *shrugs*

Meh, I only know that DVR is impacting ratings, but don't know what the network looks at. The numbers we see really don't mean too much, it's the numbers within the numbers, aka key demos. I also know that SGA has not really lost that many viewers, they have just been time-shifted. Still they need to get more "Live" viewers.

BTW, I'd green ya, but I need to spread the green around. :p *goes to green friends on GW* be back! :D

 Greened! Oh my goodness, I must be talking sense. This can't be good! ;) I'm obviously overtired and talking normal.... that must mean it's bed time. :P I wonder which demographics are doing well. If I understand correctly (although I very much doubt it) The key demographics are what's used to set the costs of how much the advertisers pay aren't they? Or not :S So, if they're doing well and the target audience is whom they're aiming at, and they're the ones watching then that must be a good thing? Right? :o Oh dear *I hope i've not just made a tit of myself and have got that all wrong* If I have I could always blame it on the fact that it's past my bedtime :D

That would have been the SG1 episode "Uninvited" and the SGA episode "Progeny."

In my neck of the wood, Sacramento CA, the syndicated episodes air on Sunday afternoon, beginning at 2pm.

Air times vary from market to market in the US, depending on the ratings for each market area.

However, we USED to also get a second showing of the previous week's syndicated episodes early Monday morning. They stopped this season. :(

AND, on the weekend before Halloween, we didn't get the SGA episode at all, as SGA's time slot was taken for a marathon of Simpson's Halloween episodes.

:(

Egads, I hope SciFi doesn't have a similar deal with MGM like they had with Paramount for Star Trek: TOS -- SciFi had syndication rights for ST:TOS for TEN years! So far, SciFi has had syndication rights for Stargate for the past six years...we'll find out (eventually) what kind of deal they struck with MGM.

SG1 - In US Syndication:

I noticed in one newspaper article a while back (Fresno Bee on Sept. 8: http://www.fresnobee.com/262/story/847408.html), that MGM was syndicating SG1 again this Fall as an "MGM Presents" package.

The episodes finally started showing in my local market (Sacramento, CA), and the first episode shown was:

Season Six's 'The Other Guys.'

What an odd place to start a run in syndication -- almost half way through a season.

In any case, please be sure to check your local listings for channel, date and time for syndication of both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis' fourth season. (In my area, they are on two different channels, SG1 on the local ABC affiliate and SGA on the local MyChannel affiliate.)

That's a surprising amount of people watching on syndication to me, considering how it's handeled here.

Does anyone know why Miller's Crossing was skipped? I'm watching The Mortal Coil right now, and even my digital box's guide says MC should be on. I'm not really complaining, but I'll be REALLY pissed if Trio is skipped. :(

I'm not quite sure why 'Legend of the Seeker' was not included in this report, it premiered this week, and it's definitely in the fantasy category.

In any case, Cynopsis (http://cynopsis.com) reports:

and the new Legend of the Seeker produced by ABC Studios and distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television, is tied with CSI: New York as the #1 weekly scripted hour as the series premiered the weekend of November 1-2 with an average of 4.1 GAA HH national rating and taking in an estimated 5.8 million viewers.

Hi, Darren. No, unfortunately that week SciFi Wire didn't post them. :(

Hi, Darren. No, unfortunately that week SciFi Wire didn't post them. :(

Actually, they did post them but not until much later then they usually do. I was able to copy that week's syndicated ratings when I checked late in the day, on the off chance that Scifiwire caught their mistake; they did. Here are the ratings for that week:

Legend of the Seeker 2.9
Lost 0.9
Star Trek 0.7
Stargate Atlantis 0.6
The Dead Zone 0.5
Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 11/3/08 to 11/9/08.

Color them to your own taste!

;)

Your welcome, morjana!

I vaguely remember checking Scifiwire just before heading to bed that day. So I was very lucky.

Usually, you are my go-to ratings gal, whenever I forget to collect these ratings reports for my own files. I always check here, on those occasions. So I am very glad that, for once, I can return the favor. Pay some dues, so to speak.
