    `Stargate: Atlantis'

    9 p.m. Friday, Sci Fi

As TV science fiction goes, there's nothing particularly bad about
this spinoff from the long-running ``Stargate'' series. On the other
hand, there's nothing particularly good about it either. One thing's
for sure: It certainly does not have the kick or the comedy touches
of the original. And it badly needs a strong central focus like
Richard Dean Anderson. Still, there are some moments as a new team of
scientists and military folk find a Stargate buried in the Antarctic
and find themselves zipping off to the fabled underwater city. Maybe
things will get better with time.

But then, neither did the "original" in the beginning. My fear for Atlantis is that a lot of people, especially "new" fans, will expect it to be the best thing since sliced bread right from the first moment and not really give it a chance to evolve over time as SG-1 did... I predict a lot of 'Atlantis SUX!!1!!' based on the first episode alone, or even the first couple of episodes....

So true. The humor has grown over the years. The movie wasn't "funny" at all, although there was some humor in it, so it has surprised some people coming to the series SG-1 after liking the movie.

The reviews seem to be a little all over the map, so I see that as a good sign...critics who are not fans of scifi or the show are trying to be objective. I'm definitely committing to Atlantis for the season, even if I do cringe at it for any reason. It's no big deal for me to record it and watch it when I have time. I just have to remember to stay away from the threads after the eps air.

It sounds like the writer's boss said " Here, write something for the paper in time for the deadline."

A neither good or bad review of the show. Come on it's the first eps.
