    Ready Your Tapes,

      so what was he?

the ranks are used fairly arbitrarily on tv shows because sargeant is recogniseable as opposed to something more longwinded such as master sargeant (although i noted that walter did get promoted). its likt calling a lieutenant colonel "Colonel" instead of "lieutenant" or something

according to http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/about/ranks_e.asp Sargeant is a rank for the Canadian Army and AF. Did you learn the ranks of non-commissioned members?

This site specifies that a sergeant is an E-6 in the Canadian Air Force and Army. So that guy could be in either one of those services.

              Probably an inconsistency.

BTW, I'm curious to know what that is in your siggy.

Looks like a stargate to me, but gone a bit funny, that's the dangers of ASCII art and not using a fixed size font.

All forces in the US, and most in the UK if I remember correctly, abbreviate their ranks in speech. It's only the USMC that doesn't and finds it offensive to do so.

This bothers me, a bit, because I find it hard to believe that both Bates and Stackhouse were just basic Sergeants. At their ages, and as purportedly experienced specialists in their field, they should be higher ranked.
