    Stargate: SG-1 Season 8 Premiere
TV Review: New threats and new allies for the SG-1 team.

July 08, 2004 - After 8 years of saving the Earth on a weekly basis, you'd think that a series like Stargate SG-1 would have run out of steam or at the very least show signs of slowing down. Neither seems to be the case if the two-hour premiere for the 8th season, "New Order," is any indication.

When we last left the intrepid SG-1 team, Colonel Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) was left in suspended animation in an attempt to forestall the deadly effects brought on by allowing the knowledge of the Ancients, the race who built the Stargate system, to be downloaded into his mind. While this allowed O'Neill to operate a powerful weapon left by the Ancients under the ice in the Antarctic, the power came at a price as O'Neill's body began to shut down.

This isn't the first time O'Neill has found himself trying to purge the knowledge of the Ancients. When O'Neill's life was threatened the last time, the Asgard, an alien race friendly to Humans, were able to save O'Neill by erasing the knowledge from his mind. Unfortunately, the Asgard aren't returning their calls at the moment, which leads T'ealc (Christopher Judge) and Carter (Amanda Tapping) to try and find the Asgard in a ship that had been modified by O'Neill while under the influence of the Ancients. The trip isn't without its own dangers – the trip is technically beyond even this ship's upgrades and if they fail to find help, they may very well be stuck.

Being stuck at the far end of the Universe becomes the least of their problems as they find themselves in the event horizon of a black hole. The black hole was meant to keep the Replicators, an alien race of self-propagating machines that consume everything they come across, away from the rest of the galaxy and especially the Asgard.

Meanwhile, the Stargate Command's new C.O., Dr. Elizabeth Weir (played by Torri Higginson, replacing former Captain Power actress Jessica Steen) and Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) finds themselves on the receiving end of an intriguing offer by the Goa'uld System Lords. Ba'al, one of the nastier of the Goa'uld System Lords left, has started taking over the troops left over by Anubis. The delegation from the System Lords also brings an unexpected bonus, a System Lord who wants to defect. The final battle & rescue reunites the SG-1 team, possibly for the last time. Upon their return to Earth, more changes are offered to the team, changes that will alter the entire structure of SG-1 and the Stargate Command.

As usual, the people behind the scenes at SG-1 do a fine job of weaving all of these plot elements together into an entertaining and cohesive story. Even though many of the events in this episode build upon previous episodes, "New Order" still manages to stand on its own, a trait of the series. Stargate has always done a good job of explaining itself, one of the reasons the series has succeeded as long as it has.

Another reason for the long term success of the series is the strength of its cast. Although O'Neill is absent through a large part of the episode, the story doesn't suffer at all by that absence. Which is not to say that his reappearance isn't a welcome one. As usual, it's Anderson as O'Neill who supplies some of the more entertaining moments in the episode. At some points he seems to be channeling Johnny Carson in his delivery and on any other show, it would seem annoying but here, it works.

As the episode's title suggests, there is a new order for things in the Stargate franchise. From the changes in the original series to the launch of the franchise's first spinoff the following week, Stargate further establishes itself as one of the premiere science fiction franchises on television.

Stargate: SG-1 "New Order" airs Friday, July 9th at 8PM on Sci-Fi Channel.

[NOTE: IGN FilmForce rates "New Order" as four out of five stars.]

That's what I like to hear. Bodes well for Season 8
