U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for Sept. 6: Star Trek Debut

    http://press.arrivenet.com/pol/article.php/688829.html

Profile America for Tuesday, Sept. 6. A popular cultural phenomenon began this week 39 years ago as millions of American television viewers began a journey to "where no one has gone before," as Star Trek introduced Captain James T. Kirk, Mister Spock, Scotty, and Doctor McCoy into their living rooms. The original series lasted for 79 shows, but spawned many spinoffs and feature motion pictures that continue the journey to this day. When Star Trek first appeared, it was nearly three years before the first humans walked on the surface of the moon. Now, with space shuttle flights resuming, interest in space flight is once again increasing. The U.S. has launched nearly 1,300 spacecraft since 1957. Find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at http://www.census.gov.
