Could someone please explain to me the lure of the labcoat? Maybe because I've had to wear one for so many years, I have lost the feel for it (sorry, bad pun).

The lure of the labcoat? Hmm, hard to explain. It think it looks just great on some people, giving them an aura of competence, professionalism and knowledge. Sometimes I think it looks just sexy! The white color, the starched and stiff fabric...
Concerning doctors it tells me to keep one's distance on the one hand, and on the other hand it gives me the feeling that the natural distance between two people can be completely broken. It's about getting very close with a complete stranger without ever getting too close, it would still be professional, unlike a relationship between lovers. Keeping the distance out of respect and suddenly breaking it to the point where a doctor can take over the care for someone else's life completely and in seconds - I like that thought. This combination, represented by the labcoat, is irrestible for me! Gives me warm fuzzies sometimes! I hope it doesn't make me sound too crazy!
In Carson's case I think he is the embodiment of cuteness and care in that white thing. In Rodney's case I think it makes him look even more genius like.
There was also someone on the CB thunk thread who said it makes the doctors look so pure.
Well, I'd really love to hear other opinions and explanations why someone loves the labcoat!

Thank you for the great answer. I don't think I'll ever look at my labcoat in quite the same way again. My better half still has to wear one, with scrubs.....hmmmm, maybe this is a good thread for me to visit.

My better half is also wearing a labcoat sometimes (look at my sig), I just love that. His fellow students have written some funny things on it, like “Don’t ask me” or “It’s a beautiful day”.
