The first season of "Battle star Galactica" established it as a show that leaps through the screen, grabs viewers by the windpipe and squeezes slowly.

Can that level of intensity carry over to its second season? The answer is immediately evident when the premiere episode, "Scattered," airs at 10 p.m. Friday on the Sci Fi Channel.

"Scattered" jumps into the same scene that ended the first-season cliffhanger. Cmdr. Adama (Edward James Olmos) lies unconscious, drenched in blood after being shot point-blank by Cylon Sharon. She's an enemy who looks human and, until now, was regarded as a loyal crew member.

Command passes onto the unsteady shoulders of Col. Tigh (Michael Hogan). Tigh has an ambitious wife, often uses booze as a crutch and hates making critical decisions.

Then, things get worse.
