    Cult Times #106 - July 2004 - "A New Order"

The UK SciFi Magazine "Cult Times" most current issue, # 106 (July 2004) has an article about the "Stargate SG-1" season eight premiere episode, "A New Order."

In the United States, this magazine can be purchased at Borders and Barnes and Noble Bookstores. Please call your local bookstore and ascertain if the magazine has arrived, it's just now being shipped.

More changes are afoot for the eighth season than additional hair, as producers Robert C Cooper and Andy Mikita explain…

It’s all go over on Stargate this year. There are two production teams where there used to be just one, two Gate rooms where there used to be just one and a whole nursery full of babies where there used to be none, including production assistant Tracy Smith’s daughter, director Peter DeLuise’s son, director Martin Wood’s wee girl and executive producer Brad Wright’s latest pride and joy – her name’s Stargate Atlantis. Must have been something in the water last year.

In the midst of all this ‘production’ a spectacular eighth season of Stargate SG-1 is on the way under the auspices of executive producer and writer Robert C Cooper. Given that limited access to Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O’Neill) means segments of up to seven episodes are going to be in various stages of development at any one time, what possessed Cooper to sign on for another whirlwind year? “The truth is that when the prospect of doing both shows [ie Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis] at the same time came up, I couldn’t resist. Plus there’s so many great things happening with Stargate SG-1 it’s going to be an exciting year.”

The big news is that lots of people get a big step up the ladder career-wise. Cooper confirms, “Yeah, it’s promotions for everyone, which is providing us with a whole new dynamic this year. We’re basing a lot of stories around the SGC, partly because of economics and also because SG-1 has become less of an exploratory unit and more of a defence-type unit and the promotions are a necessary and logical step for some people who up ’til now were based at Cheyenne Mountain.”

The new order means we’ll be seeing less of a favourite familial face as General Hammond (Don S Davis) leaves the Stargate Command Centre in Colorado for a swanky new office in the Pentagon. Cooper reveals, “General Hammond is put in charge of all things related to the Stargate programme. Brigadier General O’Neill will still be in touch with him on a regular basis so we don’t lose Hammond’s presence completely. Then Carter [Amanda Tapping] gets her just desserts. It’s the first thing O’Neill does as a general.” Oh goody! Does she then get to boss everybody about? Sadly, Cooper shakes his head, “Ah, no! It’s not in Carter’s nature.” Oh, rats!

Speaking of Carter, Cooper mentions that her boyfriend, Peter Shanahan (David DeLuise) is back on the scene: “Much to the dismay of many people.” He laughs. “Pete is definitely back in a couple of episodes, which will be a lot of fun. I mean, there’s a lot of stuff on the Internet about ‘Stalker Pete’ and it’s clear that some of these people have quite a few issues of their own that they have to deal with, but the whole discussion thing is fun.”

Interesting that Cooper knows about the Stalker Pete commotion.
"... I mean, there’s a lot of stuff on the Internet about ‘Stalker Pete’ and it’s clear that some of these people have quite a few issues of their own that they have to deal with, but the whole discussion thing is fun....”

So maybe what we fans write has some effect. However, excusing Pete's poor choices by blaming the fans' having their own issues to work out is covering up his own mistake of not better explaining Pete to the audience. There was no justification for Pete showing up at Daniel's house and interfering with a mission in progress. That plot hole was Cooper's and PDL's fault.
Causality should not be taken lightly.

I completely agree with you; there´s no excuse for that guy showing up where he was not supposed to be. And as I said in other thread, the worst of all is that he received clearence to know about the SGC. Worst things happened either to Jack (with Sara meeting Charlie) and Sam (Jacob dying of cancer) and neither Jack nor Sam were allowed to explain their lives. Why now?Why has Sam heceived this ok for a boyfriend? Too many flaws

The teleplay was written by Damian Kindler, NOT Robert Cooper. Robert Cooper provided the story idea -- and as there were two plot ideas working in that episode -- Daniel and Sarah and Sam and Pete -- it is possible that one of those ideas was also Damian's.
