    Battlestar Galactica: Edward James Olmos

From the Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, IL):

    In two places at once

Everyone knows Edward James Olmos is talented, but being in two places at once is going to be tough, even for him. Olmos is preparing to direct "Walkout" – HBO's movie depicting the 1968 East L.A. student walkout in which some 10,000 students protested educational conditions and complained of anti-Mexican educational bias.

However, the esteemed actor is only on episode eight out of 20 for the second season of "Battlestar: Galactica," which shoots in Toronto, and the cable film is set to begin production July 15 in Los Angeles.

Olmos has been flying to L.A. to do single days of preproduction and location scouting for the movie, then flying back at night for his next day's work as Commander Adama on the Sci Fi Channel series, which, coincidentally enough, has its second season premiere July 15. He tells us there are no plans to write out his character while he's shooting the cable movie or even to minimize him.

How will it be possible? "A lot of cooperation between Universal and HBO," says Olmos.

"Walkout" stars Alexa Vega of "Spy Kids" fame as student activist Paula Crisostomo. More castings are still to be set, including that of Moctezuma Esparza. The producer of such acclaimed and varied fare as "Gettysburg," "Selena" and "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" was among the student protesters in '68. He's now among the producers of "Walkout."
