Actor, pastor on a mission for the family

Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. is joining forces with Father George Clements to celebrate Juneteenth weekend in Beaumont - and to raise awareness about the importance of family.
"Our future is our children," Gossett said at a special event Thursday night with area foster children at the MCM Eleganté Hotel. "We must heal our families and hold together to save our planet."
Gossett and Clements are in Beaumont for the One Church One Child Juneteenth Celebration Celebrity Golf Tournament. It starts at 7:30 a.m. today at Brentwood Country Club, 4201 S. Major Drive in Beaumont.
Clements founded the national nonprofit organization One Church One Child to recruit, train and support families and individuals who want to adopt foster children. Gossett portrayed Clements in the 1987 television movie, "The Father Clements Story."

In addition to his community service work with children, Gossett has kept busy with his TV and movie career. He will appear later this summer as an alien in the popular science fiction TV series "Stargate: SG1" and is joining Whoopi Goldberg in an independently produced TV mini-series about the Harlem Renaissance.
