Round 12 is done, the votes are tallied :)

Quick FYI, I always do these results in Notepad, and the very last thing I do before posting is that I double-check that there are no new votes. So you don't really need to worry so much about being too late :)

Apologies, as always, to the following people who didn't have their votes counted:

sg-1fanintn: Again, Sight Unseen was eliminated in round 6. If you change that vote in future rounds, we can include them :)
divcon: We're currently casting 8 votes per round. If you add an eighth vote in future rounds, then I can count it. Sorry...

We have our very first tie! If there were fewer than 75 eps left, this would result in a tie-breaking round, but as has been pointed out to me, it's a little superfluous to have a tie-breaking round this early in the game.

So, we're kicking them both out. (In case you're puzzled about the fact that the last time this happened, I begged for more votes to break the tie... two eps at a time is fine with me. I just have a problem with kicking out 3 or more eps at a time.)

The First Commandment and Spirits are both gone!

And, again, in case anybody is curious, here are the season overall standings:

Number of episodes per season with 6 or more votes:
Season 1 : 5 / 19 episodes
Season 2 : 6 / 20 episodes
Season 3 : 4 / 22 episodes
Season 4 : 3 / 22 episodes
Season 5 : 2 / 22 episodes
Season 6 : 4 / 20 episodes
Season 7 : 2 / 18 episodes

Overall Season Rankings (listed best to worst) (here is the explanation (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=4316623&postcount=432) if you want to know how it works.)
5 - 3.382%
4 - 4.020%
3 - 4.316%
1 - 7.389%
6 - 7.670%
7 - 8.271%
2 - 8.533%

That's it! Now, everybody vote again for the next round! (Initial post with current standings and episodes remaining (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=4295728&postcount=1))

My votes and opinions:
The Other Guys
Demons
Red Sky
Metamorphosis
Beneath the Surface
Message in a Bottle
1969
Desperate Measures

fair_nymph: no, you're not the only one who thought The Other Guys was worse than Avenger :) I felt that way too, if only because by the time Avenger came around, I'd gotten over the shock of the badness :)

One False Step (I am shocked, shocked that this is still around!) Aw, Celsius, that's one of my all-time favorite episodes. Except for the cheesy plants, I loved it. But then, season 2 is my favorite season, so I can see I disagree with almost everyone here about this. I am sad about Spirits and about the fact that Need especially will be voted off soon. :(

It's fascinating to me that so many posters are determined to vote out the (IMHO) well-written, well-directed and well-filmed funny eps in favor of the less-than-stellar more serious ones. Every man to his own tastes...;)

That's it! Now, everybody vote again for the next round! (Initial post with current standings and episodes remaining (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=4295728&postcount=1))

My votes and opinions:

Red Sky

Desperate Measures

It's fascinating to me that so many posters are determined to vote out the (IMHO) well-written, well-directed and well-filmed funny eps in favor of the less-than-stellar more serious ones. Every man to his own tastes... ;)
I wasn't going to go into detail about this, but *heh heh* since you asked... *gives an evil grin as she steps upon the soapbox*

To me, the show (or any work of fiction, really) boils down to its characters. In order for me to enjoy the show, I must first believe the characters. I have to believe, on some level, that they are real, so that I can empathize with them and care about what happens to them. I have to believe (at least as long as I'm watching the show) that I'm eavesdropping on something that's really happening in some AU out there. This suspension of disbelief is vital to my enjoyment of the show as a whole.

So, really, I only have one requirement in order to not hate an episode - I have to be able to believe it. And I can't be the only one - how else do you explain all the people trying so hard to come up with believable theories on why everybody through the gate speaks English?

This may seem like a stringent requirement. It isn't. In fact, there's only one episode which failed to meet it (three guesses which one). See, when I sit down in front of the TV, I want to enjoy the show. I want to get involved with the characters. And so my mind will do whatever it takes to get there. You would not believe some of the rationalizations I can come up with (for example: did you know that Sam once got onto an elevator humming, not the Stargate theme since the Stargate show doesn't exist in the Stargate universe, but some totally different tune that just happens to sound exactly like the Stargate theme?) And what I can't rationalize, I'm usually able to ignore.

I believed One False Step. I believed Wormhole X-Treme (the outtakes at the end were, after all, outtakes, and not part of the show. So I could still enjoy them.) I believed Urgo. I believe in BtVS, Harry Potter, and the Marvel Universe (my other big recent fandoms). I can even believe Anubis's dialogue, or at least I could after Rodney mocked it. I'm really good at suspending disbelief. Which means that if an episode comes along which even *I* can't believe, then something is very, very wrong.

The Other Guys wasn't just a bad episode. It was an unbelievable episode, because the main characters in it were caricatures of people who would never have been permitted off-world, and because if anything like that really happened in the Stargate universe, Felgar and friends would be so dead. Because it was so unbelievable, it almost managed to single-handedly destroy the entire show for me. Because it cast doubt in my mind about the reality of the show. I was able to get to the point where I could enjoy the show again by convincing myself that the entire episode, from beginning to end, did not happen in the Stargate universe, but only in the mind of Felgar.

In other words, the only way I could continue to enjoy Stargate after seeing The Other Guys was by convincing myself that the entire episode did not exist!

As for being funny... I thought Wormhole X-Treme was funnier. And Urgo. I found Crystal Skull to be much funnier, and WoO was certainly funnier. I thought 95% of the serious episodes were funnier. I laughed harder at "Wow. That's... uhh... ambitious" (Exodus) and "Daniel, go to your happy place" (Enemy Mine) - just to pick two examples - than I ever did in The Other Guys. Why? Because those were believable funny parts of believable episodes.

And the really awful thing is, I think the writers did it on purpose. Screwed with our ability to suspend disbelief, I mean. Which knocks the episode down a few steps from "bad episode" to "unpardonable sin inflicted on the viewers."

I'm sorry, but I cannot forgive The Other Guys for existing.

:D Now, aren't you sorry you asked? *steps down from soapbox and points to sig pic*

Though I hope we agree to disagree on the "qualities" of TOGuys, my voting philosophy to this point is similar to Katerine's. I'm not choosing eps based on I hate "XY character" or this or that plotline. So far my voting's based on eps that missed the mark. I hated the premise. Or I like the premise, but found the overall execution lacking. (For example, I voted for Grace, not because I hate Sam. I like her character and Ms. Tapping did a wonderful job acting in that episode. The premise of character exploration was good, but the plot device of being the sole crew member and her odd delusions were disconcerting and unbelievable, IMHO).

I agree Capt. V. I’ve been voting for the ones that had poor overall quality (IMOHO) – meaning overall the worst writing, worst sfx, etc. I realize some are coming and voting strictly based on hating or loving ‘Character X’… but since the title of the thread is ‘best episode’ (and not best/favorite character) I’d hope we’re voting on the overall quality of the show and that soon, within a month, we’ll have less shows to choose from and these would be great overall shows… not necessarily the greatest Danny show, the greatest Jack show, the greatest SFX show. *shrugs* But everyone has different agendas and ideas and will vote in what ever way they feel is best. For me… I’m hoping the ones that we finally get down to are high quality – the kind that were so good overall that you could take a tape/DVD with these great eps and give them to someone who’d never watched SG before and they’d say “Cool! Great show! Can I watch more?”

Katerine: thanks (again) for counting eight of my votes since I obviously cannot add to save my life. :o

Also, thanks to those who post a little of their reasoning behind their voting here. It is VERY enlightening for me to see your opinions, and although I may not always agree with them ;), learning why you are voting the way you do helps to expand my insight the show and how it appeals on a variety of levels and to different tastes. Considering each other's viewpoints only adds to my overall enjoyment of the show!!

I absolutely agree that "suspension of disbelief" is essential to a fuller enjoyment of any scifi show, and it is fascinating to see where each of our limits in this area lie. (I guess my level must be pretty low :o, because it actually never even occurred to me that "the Other Guys" would be considered an impossible premise by some. To me it fits right in, no prob :D )

Seldom in my perusal of the ep threads have I come across posters who are as vocal about finding the filming (i.e., direction, editing, pacing, etc.) of an ep to be it's downfall, more so than say, the acting or the writing. The filming of an ep is the area in which I am MOST critical, and where most of my ep choice differences seem to lie in these polls. :) It is so interesting to me to see why you favor the particular eps that you do. THANKS!

Mwahaha OFS died! (sorry aizjanika)

S'okay. :-) I still have my DVD. hehe You guys can't take that from me. ;-)

I absolutely love your sig pic, Katerine. I also agreed with most of what you said. The important thing for me is the characters. If I like the characters and/or if they are doing things I care about (and caring about each other), then I'll probably like the episode. There are a few episodes I like more for the story than the characters, but not many. Anything else probably doesn't even register on my radar.

I also tend to like the more serious and/or angsty episodes, so I guess it is all a matter of taste. Those are the episodes I'd be more inclined to watch over and over. I tend to be bored by episodes with lots of ships, battles, things blowing up, technical stuff, rushing around, etc., so I wouldn't consider those types of episodes to be the "best" of anything--at least not most of the time, although I wouldn't rule it out.

OTOH, I actually liked The Other Guys because I liked Coombs and Felger. hehe I thought they were funny. I thought Avenger 2.0 was funny, too. But...if I had to choose between TOG and an episode that featured characters I liked more, I'd probably go with the other episode because TOG and Avenger 2.0 aren't episodes that I'd want to watch 5 or 10 times the way I have with, say, Torment of Tantalus or an episode like that. OTOH, I could watch One False Step a hundred times and I doubt I'd ever be bored by it--well, maybe if I had to watch it 100 times in a row. ;-)

I'm mostly voting based on which episodes I would/wouldn't watch again because to me that's what says "best overall." I know which DVDs I feel I wasted my money on (except not really, since I wanted to have them all) and which episodes I tell the Tivo not to bother to record. I don't think it's possible to be completely objective--at least not for me. I'm not like a figure skating judge where I can objectively evaluate an episode based on many different factors. The show is the characters for me. I only know what I like or dislike--which episodes I think are good.

For me… I’m hoping the ones that we finally get down to are high quality – the kind that were so good overall that you could take a tape/DVD with these great eps and give them to someone who’d never watched SG before and they’d say “Cool! Great show! Can I watch more?”

I think every single one of my top favorite episodes (the ones I think are "best overall") are going to be voted out in these first rounds, unfortunately. :-) I must just be weird. :-) If I had to choose an episode to convince a friend to watch, I probably actually would choose Beast of Burden or Enemy Mine, but if I had to choose just one, I'd choose Torment of Tantalus and if I could choose two, I'd choose TOT and Need. But according to you guys, at least three of those might scare my imaginary friend away. ;-)

I actually can't think of any episodes that I absolutely hate, though sometimes there are some aspects of an episode or a particular storyline that I absolutely hate and that could ruin an episode for me. I watch those with my finger on the FF button. :-)

Hey, :S I'm pretty new to all this stuff. The episodes that go down in my estimation are the ones that seem to be ridiculous. i.e. wormhole x-treme I felt was trying to be funny but just wasn't. I like 'the other guys' because it made me laugh out loud. I guess I don't really want to view it as a reality....more as a form of entertainment. And why shouldn't Felger turn out to be capable of suviving a couple of jaffa?

*I just vote on the overall episode - story, character development, pacing, etc. Obviously we all have preferences but I can truthfully say that I've disliked episodes that have heavily featured each of the characters. And I've adored episodes that have heavily featured each of the characters.

I printed out the original list. Underlined several "least favorites" in each season and have been adding those as I go. I've found it interesting that S1 and S2 have produced a fair number of my "least favorites".

The episodes that bore me, make me cringe and have a lackluster story full of plot holes are the first ones to go. Sometimes episodes make me cringe a little, but don't especially bore me. Or vice versa. Or the character development may be great even if the story isn't that wonderful. Those may stick around awhile in the "apathetic" category. The episodes where I've really liked the "A" or "B" story and totally disliked the other half are the hardest to judge.

I think it's interesting to see the diversity of opinions on the "funny" episodes. Humor is just so subjective. What makes one person laugh out loud makes others cringe.

At the end of the day I'd hope we end up with a top-25 that most of us could watch and enjoy. But that may be wishful thinking. ;) *

Right now I’m basically voting for all the episodes I found boring. Plus 3 are clip shows so………..let’s just get them out of the way. I did find Brief Candle cringe worthy though and not necessarily totally boring. The whole thing with RDA aging. *shudder at the acting* Same goes for The Broca Divide with having the team digress on the evolutionary scale. Though I’m voting for TOG just for Katerine cause she’s willing to take on the endeavor of running this tournament. But it is in no way one of my favorites eps and falls in my 25 worst eps. so it was eventually going to get my vote sooner rather than later. As far as funny eps go Wormhole X-treme is one of my favorites. Though actually I think I love all the funny eps with the exception of TOG and of course Prometheus Unbound which unfortunately falls in S8 otherwise this would have been the first episode on my wish list to die the most horrific death ever. I hate it probably as much as if not more than Katerine hates TOG and for the same reasons. It is the worst episode of the entire Stargate series. Course that’s just my opinion. ;)

Since we're all 'splainin' our votes, I'll say I don't have anything against SG-1 comedy per se but when TPTB try to overtly bring The Funny, the result tends to make me want to claw my eyes out. At this point I find that I'm ore inclined to vote against episodes that were kitsch-ridden (Touchstone, I'm looking at you) or which featured excruciatingly bad acting and/or writing (including the Anise/Freya arc, which was more like a slo-mo train wreck).
If I had my druthers, I'd vote off S6 en bloc save for four episodes (Frozen, Abyss, Prophecy, The Changeling), but not for the obvious reason—Jonas. Whatever the cause, the writing crashed & burned that year, making me kind of wish it had never happened to begin with.
Whoops. I ended a sentence w/ a preposition. Jack will not be pleased. ;)

Round 14 is done, the votes are tallied :)

:) I really, really love the fact that you guys took my expressing myself on one episode and turned it into a discussion of your voting philosophies! :D It's been really fascinating and insightful reading, and has forced me to rethink some of my own episode rankings (see opinions section for more). Thanks, guys! :)

I also hold the goal of ending up with a list of the "best" episodes when it comes to overall quality. Theoretically, this should happen whether people vote objectively or subjectively, since, usually, subjective "likes" also reflect on overall quality. I hadn't quite taken into account people voting for or against a particular character, although I really should have (especially since I'm a little guilty of that myself - see opinion section). But still, we have enough participants that the the character-related votes should balance out. Hopefully.

On another note, I think everybody already knows this, but just to make sure... for the most part, everything above the "My votes and opinions" line is official stuff related to managing this tournament, and should be read, or at least skimmed, by all. Everything below the "My votes and opinions" line is just me expressing myself as a person, and carries no special weight whatsoever. Everybody is free to likewise express themselves, or not, as they please (within the moderators' rules, of course)... I only have one request, that everybody continue to limit their posts to 1 post per round. You have no idea how much easier this makes the tallying. Thanks :)

A couple of more specific responses:
keshou: That (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=4323489&postcount=597) sounds like a really good system you've got going for figuring out your votes :) I prefer my database, but your system sounds easier for those who don't have all the episodes listed in a database anyway :)

Desperate Measures

As I said above, it's been great reading everybody's voting philosophies! Many thanks, Capt, for turning the conversation in that direction :)

After reading several posts about people voting for/against certain characters vs. voting on the overall quality of the episodes, I took a look at my own episode rankings. As some of you may know, I decided to have my database take care of keeping track of what to vote for next; I have all episodes ranked in there, from 1 (worst - first that should get voted off IMO (TOG)) to 154 (best IMO (Enemies)). Looking at the list, I noticed that, though my lower rankings were based on overall quality, there were several episodes that I'd put in the higher ranks simply because they were Daniel eps. Although I take some justification in the fact that there are a couple of people in here who seem to be strongly biased against Daniel eps. :( (And I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed that, Carterslave!)

Anyway, I spent about 4 hours yesterday rearranging all my votes to put greater weight on more objective criteria. Yes, I do have way too much time on my hands :)

The main reason it took so long is that I have a lot of criteria to simultaneously take into account.

First of all, I have to juggle the eps which were my favorites with the eps which objectively I consider best. Sometimes they are the same. Sometimes not. I want the rankings to reflect both considerations, but give greater weight to the high-quality eps. This meant lowering the rankings of some of the favorite eps which happened to be of lower quality.

Then of course it was pretty hard to compare, say, WoO with Meridian :) And also, sometimes I let myself be swayed by popular opinion. Sometimes not.

In the end, I had the following list, based on the following criteria for "good" or "bad" episodes:
#1 - The bad episode. I've already covered this one ;)

#2-44 - The ho-hum episodes, about which I feel either apathetic or ambivalent, and which I felt had generally poor overall quality.

#45-83 - The fair episodes, which I kind of liked, and which I felt had generally fair overall quality.

#84-130 - The good episodes, which I liked, and which I felt were objectively good (or were objectively fair but I REALLY liked them, like "The Nox"). "Good" episodes are eps which have overall quality (direction, editing, etc.) that's at least fair, and that have one or more of the following qualities:
a. The ep made me think.
b. The ep made me laugh (or cry, as the case may be).
c. The ep had good character development and/or character interaction.
d. The ep was exciting, either because of action or intrigue.
e. The ep forwarded a good storyline, in a good direction.

#131-154 - The really good episodes - the ones which did one or more of the above, and did it really well.

It was interesting (to me, at least) to see how my rankings changed when I forced myself to put greater weight on objective quality. My top three (Meridian, WoO, and Enemies) stayed the same, and my bottom 13 votes stayed the same, but everything else got shifted around. The Light, for example, kept getting dropped until it went from #125 to #92. CotG Part 1, OTOH, rose from #101 to #114. Cold Lazarus kept going up, and down, and up, and down, and up, and down (is currently at #45. Would be much higher - it did, after all, make me cry - but for the acting, which was way below RDA's normal par (as it typically is anytime he plays anybody but Jack. Although he did a fairly decent "Daniel" in Holiday. His "Teal'c," though, was... not good)).

(As a side note, after forcing myself to think objectively... Absolute Power rose from #146 to #149. When I first saw votes in here for Absolute Power, in the first round no less, I think I spent a few moments just gaping at the screen in disbelief. I still don't get it. I mean, not only was it a really well-done ep, and not only did it have terrific character development and forward one of the greatest and most meaningful storylines in sci-fi, but it really makes you think! It illustrates a lot about human nature and the nature of good and evil. It's one of the best episodes, of any show, that I have ever seen. I just don't understand how it could be getting any votes.)

Anyway, I just wanted to thank all of you guys again for the very insightful posts, which helped me rethink my own rankings :)

LoneStar1836: Thanks for the vote on my behalf. :) To be honest, I'm not sure whether to be happy that TOG is getting more votes, flattered that you're voting on my behalf, or concerned (in an official capacity) about skewing the vote results, and not through my powers of persuasion :) . But if it was in your bottom 25 anyway, it probably doesn't make too much of a difference. Haven't had a chance to see Prometheus Unbound yet. I've heard both good and bad things about it - is it really that bad? I really don't want it to be that bad - Daniel eps have to be good!

ok, since we're explaining. My issue with an episode, and it's purely a matter of personal tastes, is when i see the charcters stuck in a cringeworthy situation. I don't care for holiday because i find the old man/daneil swapping silly. even though i do enjoy cj and rda trying to act like the other.
FIAD is the same thing. The whole eps was pretty much for nothing other than getting rid of shau'ri.
Entity, poor sam. I don't quite know why but as much as i like sam, i just can't get into it.
Beast of Burden, it has its moments but i've never cared for the unas storylines.
Lifeboat, also it's the acting. I am well aware that people will hate me for saying this, but it gets old to have the annual 'daniel goes nuts' episode. Why can't we have Tea'lc going nuts? or Sam? Or Jack? Why is it always daniel? also i was so embarrassed for him. I can't stand to watch 'i love lucy' for the very same reason.
Enemy mine is because of colonel edwards. How did folks get this stupid? they've been exploring the universe for how many years and still don't know to leave things alone. they find and disturb a burial ground and say nothing? not to mention edwards obviously taking lessons from the George Custer school of diplomacy. the character was a disgrace.
legacy, well that goes back to my dislike of chewing the scenery, and unfortunately daniel seems to get those episodes the most. The ending is good, but still the whole eps seems written solely to have daniel go nuts. We've never seen or heard anything about machello's toys since, which pretty much makes the two episodes a waste.
we have these critters that will 'free you from your goauld captor' and no one mentioned using it on skaara? No one has ever wanted to launch an attack against the goauld using it? Why didn't daniel take it to the summit?
Brief Candle, it's the whole 'i'm going old' pity party. it does have its moments, such as jack catching the mother of all std's :)

I'll explain my votes: most of them are episodes I find unmemorable, like Message in a Bottle, New Ground and Forsaken. I found that Memento kind of like New Ground re-used, and Beneath the Surface coudl have been great but the classic amnesia plot was badly done imo. Disclosure and Out of Mind speak for themselves and Point of No Return just didn't hold my interest at all! And all I could think was "it's Standford from sex and the city" :D

Some comments:

1. I adore the Absolute Power episode, because it's so surreal, and I *love* evil!Daniel . I also really liked 'Need' for similar reasons (and I was sad to see it went this time, especially instead of the much-dreaded TOG). Part of it is just the um, HOT factor of seeing aggressive, mean, dominating Daniel, and that's not too objective. But I also think MS does a really good job acting these types of roles, and I love the depth and complexity it gives Daniel's character. We're so used to nice, moral Daniel; it's fun, and edgy, and interesting to see him go over to the dark side. Or, at least it is for me.

And actually, Daniel isn't even my favourite character (that honour goes to Sam), and I don't like all of Daniel's eps (Forever in A Day and the Unas eps kind bored me).

2. Seshat made a comment a bit back about how she (you are female, yes? hopefully I didn't just put my foot in my mouth) found it odd that people seemed to voting off the funny eps over the mediocre serious eps. Obviously, what constitutes 'humour' is very variable, and so it's generally difficult to say 'oh that was a funny ep', objectively speaking. If we are referring to say TOG, I didn't find it all that funny. The same applies to Urgo, which I didn't find entirely humourless, but definitely more annoying than anything else. So for me those eps aren't even IN my 'funny ep' mental category.

But there are other eps that many consider funny, and I found them funny too (to an extent), but the ep was so lacking in other essential regards (IMO), that the humour was simply not enough to redeem the ep in my mind. I put 1969 in this category. I thought the costumes were funny, Daniel's 'nyiet!' cracked me up, etc, but overall I found the episode entirely pointless (plotwise, etc), which really made it unenjoyable for me.

3. Alot of episodes that I dislike (most of them, actually) fall into what I call the 'filler' category. Episodes that don't have any of the following: a)interesting plot/relevance to main series storyline b)good character development/interaction c)really amazing humour that can redeem the lack of a/b (such as in WoO). As sort of a subset of b) I tend to dislike epsidoes that have little focus on the main characters of the show (TOG also falls in this category IMO). Plenty of these types of filler eps are perfectly fine, they're just not anything special. Some of them though are pretty mediocre (One False Step, The Light, etc), IMO.

4. I'm bored to death by most Jaffa stuff. I just don't care about it; I'd much rather see other parts of the stargate universe/storyline. I also found a lot of the Jaffa stuff in season 8 very cheesy. The only thing that redeems the Jaffa storylines for me is Brei'tac whom I love. But Dry'ac, Ry'ak, Shaun'ac, etc, I find incredibly boring/cheesy. Also, sort of as part of the Jaffa stuff, I find the Teal'c love affairs incredibly incredibly embarassingly corny and poorly done. I mean watching him with any of his Jaffa lovers makes me want to hide, or throw things at the television. It's funny how I hear some people complain about any Sam/Jack sappiness but I rarely hear people complain about Teal'cs softcore cheesy romances. Maybe it's just me...but I'll be very happy if we don't see much Jaffa action in S9.

I watch scifi for primarily for storyline, characterization and intrigue. A good episode, in my opinion, is one that is well-plotted and engages me on different levels. Hence, I am not particularly taken with stories that deal predominantly with the Unas, for example, or episodes that don't contribute to our understanding of the Stargate universe.

OT: Katerine, as for P.U. it's really a love or hate situation that varies widely with individual taste for episode style and the characters/actors involved. I'm a total Daniel girl, and I like some scenes and hate others. YMMV. (Remember, I like TOGuys) *g*

Katerine, sadly I hoped I would love Prometheus Unbound because it was Daniel-centric. After I saw it, I was like WTF and after mulling it over I hated it even worse for a variety of reasons. This quote from you explains my hate for PU.

So, really, I only have one requirement in order to not hate an episode - I have to be able to believe it. And I can't be the only one - how else do you explain all the people trying so hard to come up with believable theories on why everybody through the gate speaks English?I found it beyond the realm of believability. The characters were totally out of character along with other things I thought were completely stupid and were too difficult to just fanwank over. Course that’s just my opinion of it since other people do love it. :)

I've been just quoting my previous votes for the last few rounds and adding new episodes when need to for the new rounds.. but after reading some of the posts and people's personal criteria for least favorites, I found myself rethinking my list and putting more thoughts into it.. and I shouldn't be surprised to see my list changed somewhat.

Clip shows ARE boring (disclosure).. but on further reflection, Inauguration wasn't too bad; it had a storyline and *actual* character developments.. and it made room for me to put more Jaffa episodes on the list. I agree with whoever said Teal'c romance is cheesy. I've added A Hundred Days because it didn't have much plot and O'Neill GAVE UP on his team on bringing him home!

Divide and Conquer stayed on my list not because of the quality of the episode itself, but because it was a big disappointment to me. 1. It had the beginning of canon Jack/Sam ship. 2. Za'tarcs were introduced but never used again. 3. Sam had to kill Martouf off (I liked the guy!). Overall it just didn't sit well with me.

I would babble on.. but I've already wasted enough space with my babblingness.

ETA: The episodes I listed are in no particular order.. listing them just helps me stay within 8 episodes.

At this point it's easier for me to vote against episodes that actively make me squirm (TOG, WX-T!), as opposed to those that are merely tedious (Rules of Engagement, Proving Ground, New Ground, most of S6). Unas episodes aren't my bag, but they do represent one of the series' few sustained attempts to depict alien lifeforms, of which there has been less and less as the show goes on.

When I look at the episode lists, I can't pick a single S2 episode that I didn't like.
Aw, The_Warrior, we can watch season 2 together. :-) That's my favorite season overall. It may not have the very best episodes, but I love pretty much every single episode and there are no episodes that I dislike--except maybe Matter of Time, which I thought was boring and had too much technical stuff in it, though I'd still pick that to watch over many other episodes.

Round 15 Votes:

1. Entity
2. Descent
3. Metamorphosis
4. Disclosure
5. Prometheus
6. Momento
7. Foresaken
8. Cure

I decided to change my votes a little, too. Up until now, I've had all season 6 episodes. It's not so much a vote against Jonas as that I just really didn't care about these episodes or the character and the other three characters or the stories (which I mostly didn't care about *at *all) weren't enough to make these episodes interesting for me. (I actually kind of liked Jonas until I watched the whole of season 6 on DVD. He's best taken in small doses.)

I actually have no system for voting. It never occurred to me to have one. I just picked a bunch of episodes off the list that I knew I wouldn't like to watch again--probably never, ever. That includes most of season 6, really, but not all. OTOH, I realized that there are a few episodes from other seasons that I actually dislike even more than my apathetic "I'll never watch these episodes again" feeling for most of season 6. I'm going to try to vote for at least one of these in every round--at least for this round and/or until I think of a better way to rank the episodes. I don't think it will change much here, since most of you seem to really dislike all of my most favorite episodes. ;-)

Entity is probably the episode that I have the most amount of dislike for overall--pretty much the entire episode--so that gets my first non-season 6 vote. I took off Smoke & Mirrors because that at least had a couple of cute scenes (not that I could be bothered to watch it again now that I've seen it twice and watched the commentary--that's enough for me). I can't say I'd never watch Entity again, though, because Daniel is in it, and I would watch his scenes--though probably only his scenes. I realized, when thinking of it this way, that my "I would never watch this episode again" method of voting wasn't necessarily accurate as to which episodes I actually disliked more because it's true--any episode with Daniel in it is one that I would probably watch again no matter how horrible I thought it was.

I'm not sure if this is a better way to vote or not, but I'm trying it for at least this one round. It's been fun to read about others' voting philosophies.

A good episode, in my opinion, is one that is well-plotted and engages me on different levels. Hence, I am not particularly taken with stories that deal predominantly with the Unas, for example,
Easter Lily, I love all three Unas episodes for the same reason you say you don't like them. ;-) I think this is interesting in a fun way. I thought they were all well-plotted and well-executed and told the most interesting and well-rounded stories that actually had a point--some meaning beyond just the story on the surface. I'm not saying that I'm "right," because there is no "right" when it comes to opinions, but those are three episodes that I like as much for the stories as the characters. In fact, all three are my all-time personal favorites: #1 Beast of Burden, #2 The First Ones, and #3 Enemy Mine. I can see that not many people agree, though, so I'm in the minority here, I guess.

I find the comments everyone is leaving about their voting reasoning to be absolutely fascinating! :D
Now I see that my original assumption (that folks were voting off the funny eps first simply because they were funny) to be incorrect. I have replaced this theory with one (determined from the general comments) that these eps were being voted off because they were thought to be "out of character" or "unbelievable" overall by the poster. Since I almost always completely disagree with both of these opinions on the particular eps mentioned, I am only now all the MORE interested in your future opinions! It is so great to see not only how we vary but WHY. Thanks again to everyone who pens their thoughts here.

Celsius: I'd never seen Sex and the City when Point of No Return aired, so the idea of Stanford popping up as Marty was not in the least an issue for me. Interesting.

Fair_nymph: yes I'm a female. Good call. :p

Aizjanika: I agree with you on the Unas eps, except for Enemy Mine, which I think was just one revisited storyline too many.

Most of the eps that draw the "A" story away from the team working together end up on my "not too interested in watching again" list. Thus the Jaffa-centered stories don't work as well for me. Nor do the Daniel-centric ones like Need, despite the fact that I love looking at Danny boy. And yes, Prometheus Unbound is one I would be voting against in the first round of any S8 ep poll. IMO, when the first word that comes to mind in describing an ep is "cringe-worthy" no amount of Daniel involvement can save it. :(

My voting policy has been to first vote off the eps that IMHO were POORLY WRITTEN, poorly acted or had some major flaw that made them unredeemable. Like excrutiatingly choppy editing or a plothole(s) so big you're surprised it doesn't swallow up the Stargate. :D All of my choices above still fall in this category, and I haven't even begun to move on to other reasons yet.

Dahar Master Thor and Egeria: "One False Step" and "Spirits" are both already gone.
Oops. Sorry. Must have fallen asleep there. :o

Although I take some justification in the fact that there are a couple of people in here who seem to be strongly biased against Daniel eps.
(As a side note, after forcing myself to think objectively... Absolute Power rose.... When I first saw votes in here for Absolute Power, in the first round no less, I think I spent a few moments just gaping at the screen in disbelief.)
Since I have voted for several Daniel-centric eps, and since I voted for Absolute Power in the first round, I'll take a stab at explaining my voting philosophy, how I view an episode and how I view Daniel. :D

I don't try to be objective, myself; all the votes taken together will bring objectivity. I realise that there are some people who didn't like The Other Guys, but I loved it. If I were to take the opinions of others into consideration in an attempt to be objective, that would skew the results.

I don't like it when our heroes behave badly. Sometimes the characters have a good excuse, as in Need or Absolute Power or Upgrades, but a good excuse doesn't (for me, at least) make the bad behaviour any more enjoyable to watch.

Daniel can be annoying sometimes, just by being himself, as in The Torment of Tantalus when he is so focused on discovering the secrets of the universe that he ignores imminent danger, but mostly the character just has bad luck with the episodes that are centred on him. Aside from gettin episodes where he is behaving badly (Need, Absolute Power), he gets the boring Unas episodes (the answer to the question of why everyone in the universe speaks English), and the overly sappy Forever in a Day and Meridian (I also don't care much for Oma).

(Edited because I forgot to change my vote!)

I tell you what, this is going to get hard once we get rid of the below average eps.
I think it will get harder for me because all my favorite episodes will be gone and I'll be forced to choose between one mediocre episode or another. ;-)

My voting policy has been to first vote off the eps that IMHO were POORLY WRITTEN, poorly acted or had some major flaw that made them unredeemable. Like excrutiatingly choppy editing or a plothole(s) so big you're surprised it doesn't swallow up the Stargate. All of my choices above still fall in this category, and I haven't even begun to move on to other reasons yet.

I actually don't really care about any of these things as long as the characters are interacting in an interesting way. I do sometimes notice plotholes, but they don't bother me all that much unless it affects the characters in a way I don't like. Other times, I wouldn't notice a plothole if it jumped up and bit me in the butt. Unless the editing is really, really bad, I probably wouldn't notice that either--and maybe not even if it was really bad--and even then, it wouldn't bother me unless... Well, sometimes it seems like things are edited to deliberately change the way the characters are interacting, and I do notice that and dislike it sometimes.

I usually tend to like the acting on the show, so I can't think of any episodes I disliked because of an acting choice or because I felt the actor couldn't or didn't pull it off. I think they are all fantastic actors, but especially MS. Sometimes I don't like the writing, but again, that would more relate to the characters. I don't like the way that Sam was written in season 7 and some of season 8--and sometimes I don't like the way Sam was written in seasons 4 - 6 either. I don't like the way the interaction between Jack & Daniel was written in season 4, though I can fanwank that. I dislike that the writers changed the way Jack & Daniel's friendship was portrayed over the years, too--nothing but banter (which is fun) and eliminating anything really meaningful (not so fun).

I loved Need because I loved what it said about the characters and the insight into the characters--especially Jack & Daniel. I thought the acting was excellent (what do I know? I'm not an actor... <G>) and I just loved that episode from beginning to end. I also loved Secrets for the same reason. In that episode there were character insights into all four main characters and a little into Hammond as well. One False Step is the same--lots of insight into how the characters felt about things and how they'd react. That's the kind of thing that draws me in. Pretty much everything from the end of season 3 on is lacking in some ways because of the lack of meaningful interaction between the characters. I keep watching, though, because I love the characters so much--well, especially Daniel at this point. I can't look away. ;-)

Since we're all explaining the reasoning behind our voting... I tend to go with my gut. Did I enjoy the episode? Was it believable? Was it well written/acted/directed? Did it make me laugh or cry? Did it hold my attention firmly, or was I doing something else while watching it? (I tend to multitask when I watch TV.) If I see it on my DVR, am I going to re-watch it or just delete it?

I try not to let myself be influenced either way by any one character or ship.

I chose my initial eight by envisioning the following scenario (please don't laugh :) ). My DVR contains every episode of SG-1 seasons 1-7 (if only it had a hard drive that big! :p ). I'm about to leave for a vacation or a business trip. On my way out the door, I realize that my DVR is at its maximum recording capacity, there are programs it will record while I'm away, and it will delete eight SG-1 episodes at random to make room unless I choose eight eps to delete. I have a plane to catch, so I have to choose right now. Which eight do I choose?

Whenever one of the eight I voted for is eliminated, I choose a new ep using the same scenario. If none of my eight were eliminated, I keep the same votes for the next round. I don't have an ordered list, I just choose as I go.

I'm not exactly surprised by Divide and Conquer's votes, but I feel I should defend it! I love how the episode addresses the shippiness but does not embrace it. I don't like Jack and Sam as a couple at all, but I do like the forbidden and hushed-up-ness (that is now a word ;)) of it all. Also Martouf's death is deliciously brutal and realistic, and as much as I liked the character, I thought it packed a powerful emotional punch that should be credited, as the disturbing images of the soldiers killing themselves.

Decided to take out Inauguration and put in Touchstone b/c I honestly don’t remember much of what happened except for the general plot. The only memorable part was near the end when they found the bad guys who proceeded to jump through the gate laying on the floor. Obviously, it was a forgettable episode (at least for me). So it can go.

Season 3 : 4 / 22 episodes
Season 4 : 4 / 22 episodes
Season 5 : 4 / 22 episodes
Season 6 : 3 / 19 episodes
Season 7 : 2 / 18 episodes

Overall Season Rankings: (listed best to worst) (here is the explanation (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=4316623&postcount=432) if you want to know how it works.)
5 - 3.630%
4 - 4.375%
3 - 4.644%
1 - 7.883%
6 - 8.110%
7 - 8.520%

That's it! Now, everybody vote again for the next round! (Initial post with current standings and episodes remaining (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=4295728&postcount=1))

My votes and opinions:
The Other Guys
Demons
Red Sky
Metamorphosis
Beneath the Surface
Message in a Bottle
1969
Desperate Measures

Once again, it's been really fun reading everybody's posts in here :) And once again, I have no time to post anything in-depth, due to being at work...

Really thought we were finally going to get rid of The Other Guys this round... *sigh*

Also kind of sad that Enemy Mine went. Not that it was a terrific episode, but it did have pretty much the only Jack/Daniel interaction in the entire season.

Guess I should just go to my happy place...

I chose my initial eight by envisioning the following scenario (please don't laugh ). My DVR contains every episode of SG-1 seasons 1-7 (if only it had a hard drive that big! ).

I wouldn't laugh! This is actually very good and pretty close to my initial reasoning except I didn't envision it so clearly. I just picked six episodes I knew I wouldn't even bother to record on the Tivo or watch again on DVD or any other way. There *are episodes I feel more strongly about, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't watch them again, though. hehe It's complicated, isn't it? I like your idea, though.

aizjanika... Thank you for responding to my post... I know at least one or two people are interested in what I say.
I notice that people tend to pick out NID/politically oriented episodes which surprises me as I tend to really like those. I find that those episodes tend to bring out the best in characterization... *shrugs shoulders*

I'm interested in what everyone has had to say. :-) OTOH, I have to admit I have mixed feelings about the NID episodes at best. I've found most of them to be boring, though some of them have their moments.

Who now runs to console aizjanika, who's lost one of her beloved Chaka episodes. (Before Demons, really?--I'd vote for it soon, but my list is stalled).

Aw, thanks. :-) I think I'll be okay. I still have my DVD of that one, too. hehe

I don't really dislike Demons. I remember thinking it was boring the first time I saw it, but I liked it a little better the second time around and other times since then. It's not an episode I'd choose to watch if I was going to pick a random episode to watch just for fun, though.

*offers chocolate and eternal love to those who vote this darn thing out*

**perks up** Chocolate? Um...yeah...I really didn't like The Other Guys all that much after all. Honest! hee! (Actually, seriously, I'll probably be voting for that one eventually unless it gets eliminated soon. Of the season 6 episodes, it's one of the few I liked, but compared to any episode from season 1 or 2, there's no contest for me. :-) It was fun to watch a couple of times and I thought it was funny, but it's not on my "must see often" list or anything.)
