    Sci Fi Channel:
    Orbiting closer to earth

More original series to attract non-hard core buffs

    By Kevin Downey

Science fiction diehards may want to brace themselves, but cable
network Sci Fi is moving beyond aliens and spaceships with reality
shows, animated series and probably sitcoms and a late-night chat
    show.

NBC Universal's top-10 ranked network isn't abandoning its science
fiction focus, notable for original series like "Stargate Atlantis,"
but it is rolling out programs that stray from the genre. As Sci Fi
gears up for a summer of new programs and the upfront ad market,
animated and reality shows like this summer's "Master Blasters" will
    pop up on its lineup.

The programming shift is meant to accomplish two things: grow its
audience and attract younger viewers. That is according to Mark
Stern, Sci Fi's executive vice president of original programming.

"We're trying to position the network as a broad-based network that
reaches beyond what the perceptions are of the [science fiction]
    genre," he says.

"The challenge is always treading the line between broadening the
base and not alienating the core. That's not as hard as it sounds
because the core Sci Fi viewer has a broad base of tastes. A lot of
things we're doing, such as making science fiction a little less
space-based and adding humor to the mix and finding more emotional,
relatable storylines, are things the average Sci Fi viewer welcomes."

In time, Sci Fi may turn its schedule into branded nights, along the
lines of its "Sci Fi Friday," that target distinct demographic groups.

"We're in the process of looking into that," says Stern. "We do a
large variety of programming now that is reaching a variety of
[demographic] segments. We're in a place now where it is a question
of scheduling and how we want to work it. In the near term, it will
be scripted fare on Fridays and alternative and reality on
    Wednesdays."
